━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

A small smile tugged at the corner'sof her lips as he continued to investigate the silk. It was funny how something that was so normal and boring to her was so interesting to him. She tried to put herself in his shoes and wondered how she would react to such a material of she had never seen it before. It was hard to imagine such a situation. She had been dressed in silk her whole life. There were also a lot of questions she wanted to ask Veska, about him and his past. However, she didn't want to pry into his personal matters, so she held her young.

Ara noticed how he perked up at the sound of the coins jingling together. She watched as he dumped the contents of the bag over his bed roll, trying to determine his reaction of whether that would be enough to satisfy him for the time being. He was hard to read and Aravae didn't really get much from his expression before he was onto the next subject.

Aravae was surprised when he reached out and grabbed her chin. Her blue eyes widened slightly and she blinked a few times, unable to find words, she didn't pull away though. Despite the surprise of his acrion, she knew it was with good intentions. She had nearly forgotten about the small cut in her face, however the one on her shoulder was still throbbing steadily. Veska seemed to come to that same conclusion. The one on her face was fine, it would heal on its own. The one on her shoulder needed treament.

He immediately set to work collecting all the supies and tools he would need. Ara watched quietly, wondering how he managed to teach himself all this. She would ask one day, maybe, but for now she held her tongue. She watched curiously as he began chipping away at the bone with the rock. A moment later she realized why and she grimaced, nowing what was going to come next. "Thank you, Veska." She murmured, taking a deep breath before turning around so he could treat the wound. "I'm ready." She told him, bracing herself for she knew what was about to come next would not be pleasant.

Veska "Knife-Ear" Lorlilia

Veska drew out the bone dagger and moved to set it in her lap. "Bite handle. Helps. Me know." He stated before going to inspect the wound. His fingers touching at it, tracing along it to check for any inconsistencies he might have to take into account. "No carry lots while healing."

He shifted away and moved to grab his waterskin, uncorking it with his mouth and spitting out the wooden stopper. "Need wash cold. Will sting." Was all he stated before pouring a tiny trickle down over the wound, the other hand moving to softly rub away what blood was there and to show just how bad the wound was.

After the rinsing was complete he offered the waterskin to her. "If want drink. Drink now. From nearby creek. Do well." He was then sitting and lacing the thread through the hooked needle, cutting it off with his teeth to the appropriate length until he had three strands of it at the same length which he then braided together quickly, tying one end off.

Once that was done and Aravae was ready once more he began his work. He was slow and methodical, but gentle was not part of the equation. The needle dug into flesh and then pulled the wound back together painfully tight, every once in a while a finger running over where he had previously stitched up to wipe away any extra liquid that would trickle through. "Do well." He stated once he was roughly halfway through.

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

Aravae grasped the bone dagger in her hand when he handed it to her. She knew she would need something to keep her distracted. "Thanks." She murmured before giving a small nod as he warned her about the cold water. A small shiver ran up her spine as the water trickled down her back; goosebumps rose on her pale flesh. Just as he had warned, it did indeed sting. The found princess inhaled sharply as he rubbed His fingers over the wound. She then but down on her lower lip to keep any other should from leaving her mouth.

She let out a soft exhale as he pulled his hands away from her wound, but she knew they weren't done yet. They hadn't even gotten past the worst of it yet. She took a gulp of water from the skin when he handed it to her. She hasn't really realized how thirsty she had been until the water touched her lips. Once she was finished she passed it back to him and then toyed with the small dagger in her hands, trying not to think about what Veska was about to do behind her. It was necessary of course, and she was relieved He knew how to do such things, but it didn't make it any more pleasant.

A small groan escaped her lips as the make-shift needle pierced her skin for the first time. It was agoonizingly slow and painful. She could feel every p***k and every pull of the thread. The feeling of the thread pulled her skin together was actually rather nauseating. Just as Veska had suggested, Ara bit down hard on the bone dagger, to keep quiet and to distract herself from the pain. It was almost like holding you're mother's hand as a child after scraping up your knee. Only this was much more painful.

Veska was slow and methodical. His hands were steady and sure, but there was no gentleness there. He pulled the thread right and ran his fingers over it every once in a while to ensure that his work was adequate. Every time he did a sharp shooting pain ran through her back. She did her best to stay still and quiet. She felt her eyes but no with unshed tears, but she refused to blink and let them fall. When he spoke to her once more she gave a small nod. "Mhmm." She murmured, but with the dagger still between her teeth that was about all she could manage.

Veska continued working the needle through, and once he was finally done he leaned in and bit the thread, breaking it away from the needle. He then tied a knot in the other end. After that he got the green ointment he had in its small casing and took a small fingers worth, dabbing it against the stitches before rubbing it around the area quickly. It would make the wound feel numb but the skin around it would feel painfully hot.

He silently pulled away and held up a 'one moment' hand, going back over to the silk and drawing the long sword he had picked up, cutting the material into a very long, and thin strip as best as he could. He then shifted back and lifted her arm up until it was horizontal with the ground before he quickly began to wrap it around her shoulder and over her wound. He then tied the bandage off and lowered her arm, shifting away and back to the coins once more. "Do good. Medicine prevent infection. No maggots. Safe now. More bandage tomorrow."

Veska undid the leather wrapping on his leg and reached into the leg wound he had gash, digging his finger in and pushing out the chewed up plant from before in dried, bloody clumps. His face betrayed no pain as he worked, nor did he make a sound while he dug around in his own wound. After that was done he reached and took seven gold coins and set them next to him, each coin now bloodied from his hand. The rest remained on the bedroll. "Rest yours. This pay for room in city, new armor, arrows, new scabbard. Payment get to next city. More if want go next city." He then began to sew himself up, much faster than the work he had done on Aravae, and much rougher, pulling the strands with a rough yank each time rather than slow and secure deliberation.

"Food there. Drink waterskin. No alcohol. No fresh, no fire."
Veska stated as he continued working on himself, briefly motioning to the rack of curing meat. Even as he was seemingly distracted, his ears continued to twitch, and every once in a while his head would tilt ever so slightly towards some noise he heard, but his gaze never left his work as much as the rest of his body seemed to want to.

Aravae let out a long breath she hadn't quiet realized she had been holding in as soon as Veska was finished with the stiches. She let the dager fall from her mouth and back into her lap. She reached up with her other arm and rubbed her jaw. It was a bit sore from all the tension and buying down on the dagger. She held still as he dabbed theboitment on the newly stitched wound. At first it felt better. The so I d itself grew numb and the throbbing faded. However, a moment later the skin around it became unbearably hot. Painfully hot. She grimaced, but remained quiet. As he lifted her arm she held it high above her head and waited for him to finish wrapping it before she lowered her arm and turned around.

Ara then watched As he dug the chewed up plant out of his leg. She winced slightly, knowing it most be painful. However, he didn't reveal even the slightest sign of pain. As he reached for the coins and took seven of them, saying the rest was hers. She gave a small nod. She collected them back into her poych, listening as he explained that if she wanted to go farther than the next city it would be more. "Thank you for your help." She told him. Her blue eyes followed his as he began stitching up his own wound. She noticed that he was much rougher and much less careful with his own stitches. Even so, he never betrayed even the slightest ounce of pain.

When he looked up to point oiut where the good was she gave a slight nod. She was a bit hungry, so she took a piece of dried meet from the rack before sitting back down. She watched as he continued to work on his wound. His eyes were focused on his work, but his ears twitched at the slightest noises, ones that Even she couldn't hear. She watched curiously for a moment before deciding to speak up. "Veska... Where did you learn all of this?"

Veska "Knife-Ear" Lorlilia

Veska paused as Aravae spoke to him asking a rather peculiar question. He looked up slowly and looked at her as if she was asking a question that everyone knew. Then his brow furrowed, his mouth opened to speak, then it closed and he once more fell into thought for a moment.

"Rich spoiled. No learn nature. Me must learn. Die if not. Wolf taught territory. Squirrel taught safe-keeping. Bird taught hunting. Bear teach strength. Deer taught travel. Also teach weapons. Body no fangs, no claws. Learn claws, learn fangs." He motioned to the bone dagger and then to the bow and quiver of arrows. "Die otherwise. Nature uncaring mother. Teach harshly." He then gave a firm nod and went back to stitching up his wound.

Once it was done he snipped the string away. "People teach value." He motioned to the coins. "Need only basics. Make coin, get basics, leave. Do job, make coin, get basics, leave." he motioned around. "Leave here. Wander like deer. City not nature. Not good. Allow weak live." He then began to tie the knot to make sure his own stitching stayed into place. Veska grinned and moved to grab a piece of meat. "Why guards die. Why bandits die. Why live. Strong live. Weak die. Weak pay strong in city. Corrupt way."

"How learn you?"
He finally asked, now chewing on a chunk of jerky, not bothering to wait till he was done with the bite to speak, nor was it a small bite. He seemed more concerned in making sure he ate quickly rather than politely, even in front of company. That or he didn't understand manners, one of the two.

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

Aravae blinked a few times as he looked up at her, giving her a look that clearly said he thought the answer to his question was obvious. She felt the heat rise in her face as the faintest of blush filled her cheeks. She looked down for a moment, letting her face cool, but once he started talking her blue eyes rose to watch him once more. As he spoke her eyes grew more and more curious. Veska was interesting. She had never met anyone like him before. Undoubtedably he was one of a kind. From what he had said she learned that he had grown up in the wilderness. That explained his way of speaking and moving, but it also explained his survival of the fittest view of life. She nodded to his words, and thought quietly to herself for a moment.

"Veska... All of this makes sense... But do you ever get lonely out here by yourself?" She asked after a moment. After a moment she let out a soft laugh and shook her head lightly. "Then again, I have always been surrounded by people my whole life, but more often than not so felt just as lonely as when I was by myself." That was likely due to the fact that Aravae didn't really for in at the royal court. She didn't quite for the excpectations of a princess, and with her brothers just studying, there was no one left who truly accepted her.

When he asked her His own question, she but on her lower lip, unsure of how to answer the question. She had never really thought about it that way, but Veska had a point. "Well, I grew up in a castle." She started after a moment. "I was taught diplomacy and politics, readings and writing, languages, and manners." A small sigh escaped her lips as she said this. She was sure this must sound very dull to him. "I was taught to be lady like. As a lady, and especially a princess, I wasn't suppose to use swords or weapons. I wasn't suppose to fight."

Aravae paused, watching his expression as that all sunk in. "My father always disapproved, because I've always been stubborn, oppinionated, and blunt. None of which were expected of a princess. I have two older brothers. With them I learned how to use a sword and also how to shoot a how. I taught myself further. I was always seeking something beyond that palace lufe, and he hated that." She explained, another small laugh escaping her lips. She couldn't help but wonder what her father would think if he could see her now. Torn dress, bloodied and dirtied, sitting in a cave talking to a wild man who had saved her life.

Veska "Knife-Ear" Lorlilia

Veska thought for a moment, slowing his chewing down. A few of those word were new to his ear. He began to think on their meaning. "You hear why not alone soon. Plenty noise. Keep good company. City people no listen. Communication all around." He tapped one of his pointed ears. "Just listen. No lonely. Just learn nature talk. If need talk friend. Pay lady in city. Talk lots. Smell bad."

He gave a happy grin at her and a few of the new words. "What Dip-lock-mace-see? What Pole-ticks? Know reading. Know writing. Speak language. Know manners. No need. Not here." He then paused and tilted his head again. "Lady-like? No weapons? Die otherwise. Lady-like mean fight. Mother bears. Nature teach true. Strange city ideas." He shook his head at the idea of her being shunned from weapons. After a moment he swallowed and leaned to pick up the waterskin, taking a large drink from it, letting out a satisfied gasp.

He gave a small nod and pointed to her. "You right mind. Father wrong. Mother bear. Remember. Even mother wolf, and mother bird. You make good mother. Good lady. Know true meaning word lady. Good learned bow. Good learned sword. Protect important thing." He then gave a firm nod. "Life most important."

Veska's mood shifted from sociable to him being crouched on his feet, ears twitching a few times. He raised a finger to his lips. He then drew with his other finger into the dirt for her to read. 'LSTAN.' And indeed, in the silence a snap of a few twigs could be heard, they were a bit of a ways off, but the sound was steadily approaching.

Aravae had to think for a moment on how to explain diplomacy and politics. It wasn't something she had ever had to explain before. It had always just been taught to her until it became a natural thing. While she thought she took a bite from the dried meat she had taken earlier. After she had finished chewing she looked up at him. "Well, diplomacy deals mostly with the negotiations between other kingdoms and nations." She explained, though it was more complicated than that, she didn't want to overwhelm him with all of this or confuse him.

"Politics deal more with the government workings within a singular kingdom or nation." She told him before taking another bite from her meat. She chewed politely, as was habit, but his chewing didn't seem to bother her. It was different, and most of the women she knew would be put off by it. Ara didn't seem to think twice about it though. As he continued to speak, a small smile grew on her lips. It was a bit refreshing to hear someone tell her that her father was wrong. It was nice to have someone agree with her for once. "I'm glad you feel that way."

In just a split second, he went from conversational to alert. His body shifted so he was crouched rather than sitting. His pointed ears twisted. He wrote something in the dirt. It took just a moment for her to decipher it and she did as he said. Twigs snapped in the distance. Growing closer every moment. Ara's body tensed and she pushed herself to her knees, keeping silent but staying alert.

Veska "Knife-Ear" Lorlilia

Veska slowly moved the longsword towards Aravae against the ground as he continued to listen. Soon footsteps could be heard and men talking among themselves. "The tracks lead to here."

"That's what you said last time and we wasted time following deer for a couple of minutes. Are you sure?"

Veska grabbed his bow and quiver and began to make for the entrance of the brambles. He pointed at her and then at the ground beneath them before holding up a full palm and then he continued on his way, now crawling through.

"Yes I'm sure! If I wasn't sure we wouldn't be following. The problem now is that there are to many tracks around this area."

"Do they lead to anywhere central?"

"If I knew that I would've told you already!"

"Alright... Thanks to that masked man this easy job has taken a turn for the worse. How are we going to report our failure?"

"We're not you idiot. Everyone spread out and start looking." Footsteps could be heard all around, a blade even poked into the brambles at the other side of where Aravae sat.

It did not take long to hear that soft whistle of arrows flying through the air and catch a few of the men outside by surprise and drop them. "They're that way! After them! Don't let them get away this time!" The sounds of boots marching away from the brambles as a large group could be heard and then they faded away in there hurried nature.

It took only about two minutes to hear some shuffling outside. "Aravae. Safe." A hoarse whisper could be heard from Veska outside. "Cleaning. Don't come." A grunt and then dragging sounds could be heard outside as well as the shuffling of looting the bodies and tearing out arrows.

As the sound of snapping twigs grew nearer, it soon became evident that they were human footsteps. Ara knew right away that it must be the bandits from before because, other than Veska, what human would travelcthis deeply into the woods just because. They must be looking for something, or more accurately someone. Those assumptions were confirmed as they grew closer and their voices could be made out over head. Something else stool out to Aravae here. This hadn't just been some random ambush. They had specifically been targeting her. Which other meant these weren't bandits at all, or someone had somehow managed to pay off the bandits to do this for them...

As Veska slid the long sword towards her, she rested her hand on the hilt, prepared to fight of need be. Her eyes widened slightly as a sword pierced the brambles just beside her. She held her breath to keep from making any noise and remains still. The only have a small nod of her head as Veska held up his palm to her, signalling her to stay, before he crawled up and out.

Aravae listened anxiously. Soon enough there was the whistle of arrows through the air and the thud of bodies followed. The men had been taken by surprise and those that remained were left shouting, before running off once more. Veska had confused them, and in turn saved her once more. She had been crawling towards the entrance to make sure he was okay when he told her not to come up. "Alright... Are you okay though?" She asked, listening to him as he grunted and seemed to be moving fallen bodies.

Veska gave a nod outside of the bramble patch, not that she could see it. "Just fine. Lost arrows. Can replace." He looked over the arrowtips from those that had landed, wiping them clean of blood and then patting down the bodies. At the very least they had gotten weapons to sell at the next city over.

It did not take him long to come crawling back into the brambles, now holding a few more sword scabbards with blades in them. He moved to set them over next to the pile of various curing animal parts and looked up at the sky, wiping his hands off on his clothing like what he had done was no big deal or was just part of an everyday job.

"Guess take two days. They lose. We gone. Reach city ahead. Sell. Buy horses. Go where need. Sound plan?" He asked looking back to Aravae, now motioning to the swords. "Sell good. Keep one. Good protection. Buy armor city?" he asked pointing at her person and then at her torn dress. "Teach things. Let live wild travel. Not chained city idea. Good for."

Ara waited patiently for Veska to come back inside their hideout. Once he had she relaxed back into a sitting position, leaving the sword that had been in her hand on the ground between. She watched as he brought in the swords in and placed them next to the curing meat, without a single word or a blink of an eye. He was so casual about the so situation, brushing his hands off as if this was just another day. Then again, she supposed that for him It was.

Ara listened as she as he explained they would sell the swords in the next city, keeping one for protection. They would buy horses and travel to where she needed. Ara wondered for a moment of word had even gotten back to her father of what had happened. She doubted it, seeing as it had happened so far away from the castle. It would take time for someone to discover the scene of the crime, unless one of the knights had survived. Somehow that seemed unlikely. Even so, she couldn't help but wonder. What would he think? Would he worry?

When Veska pointed to her torn dress, suggesting they buy armor, a small laugh escaped her lips. "Yes, we should probably find something else for me to wear." She agreed. Something less delicate and more practical for this journey. That something would definitely not be something her father would approve of, but she didn't really care. This was the most freedom she had had in a long time. She was actually a bit sad to think that this would all come to an end when they reached L'Sundarin. She pushed the thoughts of her arranged marriage away for now, a smile frowning on her lips as Veska spoke of living wild. There was a small mischievous gleam in her eyes, her longing for adventure peaking through. "That sounds like a good plan to me, Veska." She told him with a smile.

Veska smiled and gave a nod, now motioning to the bedroll. "Sleep. Need strength. Me stay up. Make safe." He then moved over to the various animal parts and pulled several furs out, setting them in a small pile and pointing at it. "Me stay this night here." He once again pointed over to the bedroll. "You stay there."

The sounds of howling began and Veska immediately perked up again, listening with his head cocked. Then there was a hoot of a nearby owl and Veska cupped his hands around his mouth, making a hooting sound back and then listening once more to receive another hoot. He laughed gently and shook his head.

"No idea what say. Bet interesting. Hope me keep conversation good." He stated, mostly as a musing of thought before cupping his hands over his mouth and hooting again only to receive another. The sound of flapping wings and then a shadow over heard briefly flit by before silence. "Owl special animal... Wings silent. Want owl, make special arrow properties owl."

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

Aravae was a bit relieved to hear him speak of sleep. She hadn't really noticed it until now, the adrenaline from the battle and this new adventure had kept her wide awake. With that wearing off, she could feel her eyelids getting heavy. Her limbs and muscles were tired and sore. More so than they had been in a long time. As much as she trained and worked herself back at the castle, there was only so much she could do in such a controlled environment. Especially when she had to keep it a secret or risk her father preventing her from doing it. Beyond the soreness of her muscles, the injury in her shoulder was rather uncomfortable. The now-stitched gash was still effectively numb from whatever Veska had put on it. The skin around it was almost painfully hot though, she was only momentarily distracted from it by the return of the bandits. Still, she was sure the pain of this was better than the pain she would feel without the medicine.

When Veska pointed to his bedroll, stating that she would sleep there, she didn't move right away. She watched as he pulled out a couple of furs and laid them out on the ground, now stating he would sleep there for tonight. "Are you sure?" She asked him, raising an eyebrow qurstioningly at him. When he pointed to the bedroll once again, she gave a small nod and moved over to sit on top of it. "Thank you, Veska." It was definitely much more comfortable than sleeping on the bare ground. Though she wondered for a moment why he didn't keep it for himself and make her sleep on the furs. Even that would have been been better than the ground. Either way, she was thankful for Veska once again.

A moment later a howl rang through the night air. Aravae was still for a moment, watching Veska, whose ears twitched at the sound. A few moments after that an owl's hoot pierced the quiet. Ara's eyes were still watching Veska. She hadn't been expecting him to hoot back, though she supposed she shouldn't really be surprised, considering everything else she had seen this far. His passing statement caused a small laugh to pass through her lips, but it also brought more curiousity her way. She couldn't help but wonder what animals he could comunicate with and if there were any he could understand. A moment later he cupped his hand over his mouth and hooted back to the owl. He re I ever one late response before the owl flew silently off into the night. Ara listened as he explained about owl's being special and wanting one for his arrows. She gave a small nod, taking note of that. It wasn't something she had ever thought of before. "There are always a few owls in the forest around the castle. I've always admired them for their grace and beauty, but ice never thought about them that way."
