I wouldn't say I'm that bright, but I definitely shine like an emerald or maybe even a ruby. Hard to say sometimes. Now, if you'll excuse me they need me to start roman around the campus.

you shine like a ruby or Emerald? HA nice try Ruby and Emeralds done shine until they are cut in just in the right way. unless your talkin about emerald glass then it has no shine at all but is completely transparent. (not joking it is a glass) and no charecter is refined to that point. so i'd say your still rough cut.

Technically everything within our world shines, except the color black, as everything's color is a reflection of light being bounced into your eyes and being processed. So no, they definitely shine in some way or form, even if it's not by the socially accepted idea of "shining" as presented by popular media. Color is being shined into our eyes by them.
