Reverse Coffee

Tell me, are you a caffeine addict? Do you drink coffee everyday to keep you energized throughout the day? Caffeine has the effect to ward off sleepiness and restore alertness. But this bunch of coffee beans do just the opposite. Upon sniffing, the smell emitted from the beans were heavenly, like the best coffee beans in the world. But you suddenly realized that the more you sniff, the more tired you get as the beans suck out all your energy. Dr. Kyou had an unfortunate event of taking a sip from the coffee made from these tainted coffee beans, and passed out for a whole week before he regained consciousness.

Independant Bioluminescence

Bioluminescence is the emission of light resulted by a chemical reaction within a living organism. That means if the organism dies, the light will no longer shine too! But this particular fish scale that once probably belonged to a deep sea fish was washed ashore one day, glowing bright as ever. Not only that, as if it is trying to emulate the surrounding it was so familiar with in the deep sea, a vortex of darkness surrounds the glowing light, making it stand out. Is this tiny blue glow absorbing light to glow, since it is no longer attached to a living organism? Perhaps the black vortex surrounding it is a result of this absorption?

Seasonal Branch

At first glance, it just looks like a regular branch you plucked out from a tree. But as you look at it further, you felt that something is off with it. The branch is a totally different season from the actual season outside! As if being rebellious, this particular tree branch goes against current seasons. Shedding leaves during Spring, blooming flowers and growing new leaves during Autumn, being all dead and bare during Summer. Such a peculiar tree branch! But then, there is also the question. How can a tree branch alone work like it's still part of a tree when it isn't?

Unoxidized Silver

Anyone that had ever worn silver jewelry would know that after a while, silver will turn a darker shade. This process is called tarnish, or oxidation. It is a the reaction of sulphur present in hydrogen sulphide from air. However, this interesting specimen had not, or could not be tarnished, even if forcefully oxidized in sulfur. It remains bright and shiny, without any sign of aging at all. Now wouldn't this be a jeweler's dream come true? However, this particular piece of silver is not malleable at all as well, no amount of heat could melt it, and no amount of force could crush it.

Lingering Smoke

No doubt where there's smoke, there's fire, yet this particular batch was found floating about with no source to account for its existence. With only charred remains found at the site as a testament to the fire that once was, this smoke simply refuses to dissipate. Like a haunting ghost refusing to leave.

Piece of Cloud

Ever looked into the sky and imagined those puffy balls of air as sweet cotton candies in your mouth, and get disappointed from the fact that you can’t even touch these puffballs? Well, I don’t know what it actually tastes like, but these little flowing pieces of cloud within the vial certainly feel like soft cottons! And yes, I did say you can touch it, even though typical clouds are created by formless condensing substances such as gaseous water… I guess some clouds must defy their definition of formless vapors.

Unstable Lead

What sort of substance is in THIS vial... some sort of half-molten metal, or tar that's trying to solidify? Would you believe me if I told you that it's actually a piece of lead? Lead is the most stable metal known to man, being the ultimate end product of radioactive decay - but this particular chunk of it is still radioactive and unnaturally unstable, so much that it's corroding and liquifying in some places! It's almost as if you waited and watched for long enough, it would break away into nothing. As a side effect of its instability, it seems to have lost its qualities as a poison as well.

Glowing Moon Rock

Without the use of modern day lights or chemicals, all objects reflect natural light from the sun. Even on the darkest night, the moon itself can claim no credit for the glow that it emits among the stars. However, in the case of this particular chunk of moon, the rule does not apply. Because this piece of the heavens fell into this world during the great storm, it now possesses a light all its own. Shut it up in the darkest, most enclosed room and it still shines brightly.

Non-resonant Glass

This tiny sample of obsidian has the strangest reaction to sound! In its normal state, the sample is a vibrating pile of black shards. But like a dancer jumping to the beat, the glass reassembles itself in the presence of deafening noises! We've all heard the rumors of noises so loud they shatter glass, but it seems the opposite is the case of this creation, as quiet and solitude reduce it to a disorganized powder of black grain that jumps and writhes as if shattering upon itself over and over!

Self-Replicating Virus

Viruses are an infectious agent that are so small that they cannot be seen under regular light microscopes. However, they are also known to be only able to replicate when attached to the host's cell, whether they be a plant, animal or human. Unfortunately, this particular virus that had went through the corruption had developed the ability to replicate on its own, without the need to attach itself to a cell host. In fact, it had replicated so much that a small cloud of an incredibly large amount of viruses can be seen with the naked eye despite its minuscule size.

Dawn settles in that softly lit period of time just before morning. As the first beams of sunlight crack along the horizon, it is said that dawn breaks – and when this one broke, it really shattered! Along the landscape of a brilliantly lit town lay these small splintered pieces of that fateful dawn – they look like sharp little shards of a sky's color and light, but feel them, and you will feel the tenderness of dew and the calm hush of that pre-morning time.

These flowers were dubbed 'forget-me-nots', and inside this vial you can see a corsage with perfect specimens of them... but what's this? Do you smell that old country and sweet perfume of a suitor and his beloved from a forgotten time? And the vial seems to murmur, come closer, you might hear the sweet nothings they quietly whisper to each other.

Floating Rain

On a rainy day, drops of water condense from the clouds above and descend to the ground in small splashes in fractions of seconds, quickly drenching dry surfaces and filling lakes with a new coat of fresh water. Strangely enough, though, these peculiar beads of rain are simply refusing to fall completely to the ground, and remain floating and idling about in mid-air! What's even stranger, though, is that when you try to touch them they disperse into even more drops of water, scattering away from any form of contact.

Limitless Fractal

A chambered shell that fits within your palm. Each chamber is perfectly proportioned, spiraling inward with strict percision. As you examine it closely, you noticed that there are fine chambers within the chambers itself. And smaller, finer ones within those chambers. Upon closer inspection, you notice the detail at the center is incredibly intricate. Under the lens of a microscope, you see that the chambers continue, growing smaller and tighter in what seems like an infinite spiral. Where do they end? We're going to need a bigger microscope...

Bleeding Bark

Tree sap is fluid transported by the xylem cells of a tree. Some believe that they are the tree's 'blood'. They vary in different hues of yellow and orange, sometimes even to an eerie red color. However, the red fluid found on this tree bark was an even more darker, richer crimson. The even more alarming fact is that it was not tree sap at all, but blood! Kyou had double and triple checked that the tree was indeed just a regular tree, and not a dryad or some ancient tree creature. The old oak was ancient, but it was just a normal tree. It was also found that the bleeding was only contained on one particular area, so it was removed and preserved. The eerie thing is, even after it was peeled off the tree, the bark continues to bleed.

Planetless Rings

As you look at the vial your eyes are drawn to rings of shimmering dust. Bands of gold, brown and red colliding with streaks of purple and flashes of blue, always moving, orbiting. Each particle is in free-fall, like the space shuttle in orbit. Rings such as these are usually kept stationary around a planet due to the constant collisions with each other and are subject to forces other than the gravity their parent planet- gravity of surrounding moons or planets and cosmic based electromagnetic fields. However something is different with these rings orbiting serenely in the vial- a void where the planet should be. Solitary, quiet, unstable and without grounding as they spin on an invisible axis. At any second these rings should dissipate and collide into a golden puff of cosmic dust until they are no longer uniform, flying into the void, yet miraculously they do not stray from orbiting that impossible point.

Fertilizing Salt

Salt has been known for many things, including being used to eradicate crops or to destroy a patch of farmable land; causing it to be unsustainable for plant life for some time. This salt however, corrupted by the storm, has taken on the completely opposite trait. Fertilizing whatever patch of land it is sprinkled on, new life is brought into existence as whatever seeds and plants it makes contact with grows exponentially. Sprinkling it on preexisting plant-life strengthens and enhances its standing, causing crops to bear more for harvest and flowers to grow bigger and more vibrant.

Bitter Honey

Honey is a naturally sweet food that is made by bees harvesting nectar from flowers. The main compounds in honey are fructose and glucose, which contributes to the sweet taste. Although the taste of honey differs depending on what flower it was harvested from and the season, it will always be sweet. Or would it? In this little vial contained a sample of honey that is devoid of any sweetness at all. It is in fact, bitter in taste. How peculiar! One wonders why is it so? However, all we know is that the rest of the honey was quickly disposed of by the beekeepers, only leaving this small sample behind.

Living Bone

Bone is living tissue... when it is attached to a functioning, sustaining body. However, this piece of bone, which is presumed to be from some sort of animal, exhibits signs of life outside of the influence of a working body. Rather than drying out and becoming hollow and dusty, this bone supports itself by unknown means - if broken, it will eventually correct itself, the pieces mending back together. It does not seem to grow, but something is keeping this piece of bone alive, and it's... creepy.

Endless Tide

Water from the ocean rises and sinks with the gravitational shift between the Sun, Moon, and the Earth. Despite being separated from the sea, the water inside of this bottle still seems to ebb and flow with the tides of its mother ocean! This ever-flowing sample of water seems to rise and sink in response to the constant pushes and pulls from its original tide, with tiny rolling waves sloshing against the glass.

Cat-Repellant Catnip

Catnip, also known as catmint, is a genus of flowering plant that contains nepetalactone, which gives cats temporary euphoria. That is why cats love catnips so much! However, this interesting specimen while still containing nepetalactone, seems to have the opposite effect. Cats run away when this little stalk was offered to them, hissing at it even before doing so. Curiously also, it attracts bugs like mosquitoes and flies when normal catnip has the opposite effect of repelling them. When Kyou found it, it was covered with mosquitoes and flies were buzzing around it, which was difficult to miss! It actually took some effort to have it sealed within the vial without any of the bugs being sealed in with it.

Cleansing Petroleum

Contained within this vial is a sample of crude petroleum, a substance that is commonly refined into various types of fuel. It is also a substance that is notorious for polluting the seas and destroying wild life that gets stuck in it. However, the crude oil in this vial is not just any oil. This inky black substance is not only non-sticky, if you're dipped in it long enough it also cleanses your body of various diseases. Kyou was notified of it's existence when an old man had dipped his hands into the crude oil just for fun, and 10 minutes later realized that his joints don't hurt anymore. When Kyou got there, many people that worked at that particular oil plant had made good use of the oil already. And oddly enough, the amount of petroleum had decreased with every use. Unfortunately, what contained in the vial is what was left from the plant. The well was dry after only a few days of extraction. It was eventually discovered that this sampling of crude oil was unable to be refined into any other form as well.

Parasitic Cherry Blossom

Due to its immense beauty and incredibly short lifespan, cherry blossoms are coveted in Japan as a representation of the philosophy of mono no aware – a phrase literally translated as 'the pathos of things,' or an awareness of the impermanence of life. These particular blooms, however, came from a tree that refused to die by leeching the life of any and all organisms surrounding it, and look as healthy as ever! Given the tree that defied the cycle of life and death itself was surrounded in a field of carcasses of plants and animals long gone, Dr. Kyou was careful not to wander under its touch for too long. Thankfully, the blossoms inside the vial are much less volatile than its mother tree and only leech a little bit of life at a time to stay alive – which may have the tendency to fatigue nearby fauna or drain other flora completely.

Stones that have had holes worn through them naturally are seen as protective amulets and windows into the world of Faerie. What is seen through the holes in these stones is said to be the truth, any illusions stripped away by the stone’s magic. The sight that this stone gives its bearer, however, is a twisted thing, far removed from what the truth actually is.

Perpetual Sandstorm

In the beautiful country of Israel, a sandstorm blew over the Dead Sea. But this storm never stopped churning. Though there's no wind, the sand continues to blow within its bottle, forming shapes with its grains only to destroy them again. A constant cycle of creation and destruction. Once it created much more than simple dust and dunes. It mimicked nature, creating splendid trees and towering structures, or figures that appeared to move on their own before crashing back into the earth. Now it seems to favor making small flowers or weaving intricate designs against the glass of its enclosure.

Misted Rust

Mist is a thin sheet of water vapor condensed into droplets, colorless and odorless. This mist, however, shimmers with reds, oranges, golds, and browns, which is creepy enough on its own, but upon examination, it's discovered to actually be a fine cloud of rust hovering over a dried out lake bed. There’s no iron present – or water for that matter – and yet the mist doesn't seem to be going anywhere. The former lake must have rusted in the storm, and this is all that's left of it.

False Reflection

This jar of murky water is a little unsettling. Most people can’t quite put their finger on why, but the observant will notice that their reflection upon the surface is a little tall maybe, or a little short. A little thin, or maybe a little sly. This imperfect copy imitates the viewer in every other respect, but no matter who gazes at it, the image reflected back at them is a slightly different face, familiar and yet strange.

Heavy Feather

There is a saying 'light as a feather', that is because, feathers are very light. Birds wouldn't be able to stay airborne otherwise. However, the three feathers in this jar weights 1 kilogram each, how unusual. The people that found these feathers swore they saw a large bird crashed hard into the ground while trying to take flight off a cliff. However, when they reached the crash site, the bird was no where to be found, only the three feathers remained. What happened to the bird, no one knows. An examination from a professional ornithologist of the plumes confirmed they are from a bearded vulture.

When one holds the jar in their hands, it seemed that the feathers are more than just 3 kilograms in weight. And just ever so slightly, the longer you hold the jar, the heavier the feathers get as well. However, when placed on a scale, the three feathers are just 3 kilograms in total, and the weight doesn't change either. Peculiar isn't it?
