With a furious hissing, the smaller beast scrabbled back and forth, bouncing on it's jointed legs to dodge incoming attacks. The damage was starting to show and when it took a strong hit from Dante, the panic was clear. Avoiding the incoming attacks from the other Squires, the lesser beast was a blur, lashing out at Dante and missing, yet scoring hits on Alethea and Clarux for decent damage.
Under assault from others as well, the parent beast was forced to deal with the pests that pulled its attention from its baby. It lashed out at Harveer and Clarux, but missed. Turning then on Genesis, who kept getting in its way, it screeched and struck at her with a jointed limb, but succeeded in landing only a glancing blow.

MISS
Although the battle seemed to be favoring the squires in general, the rapid breakthrough that Katya had been hoping for was failing to eventuate. They had done some damage- and taken quite a bit in return- but given the nature of their mission, battles of attrition such as this would not end up helping them in the long run, especially if more and more of these minions lurked in the shadows. There certainly seemed to be enough of them on the other side of the door from whence they had come.
Once again the smallest squire seemed to have avoided the creature's attention, with no further attacks coming her way. She relied on her fists and feet (mostly her fists) to help keep Eligor's casting zone clear of the smaller beasts, but every time she thought she had a decent shot at the two larger monsters either her shot would get blocked or her target would present an armored flank to her, which denied her a chance to do any damage.
Time and again Katya would raise her bow, draw, then curse as her opportunity dried up. In frustration she swept her huge, mighty wing in a broad arc, knocking aside a number of the annoying rodents before backing up and off the front lines again. She wanted to contribute more, but she'd realized by now that taking a shot when there wasn't one was a waste of arrows and nothing more.
The little demon continued holding her fire, ensuring her arrow stock remained fairly well kept.

Attacking Baby Beast "Enemy Dodged!"
***
"Behind you, Clarux!" The warning had come too late for her to react in time, but Eligor could only hope the damage was lessened somewhat by his call. Grimacing, the mage regained his stance, holding his side. This was going less than ideal. That was an understatement.
Two beasts and they were taking this much damage...who knew what else could be waiting for them further in? Well, two large ones and countless rats, he supposed. The smaller creatures were surging forward again and instead of the beasts, Eligor was forced to pay attention to the nuisances once more. Time for some crowd control. Shortly following Katya's wing sweep, he turned, setting his back to hers and threw a charged bolt of magic into the swarming darkness. The light magic exploded on contact, sending furry creatures flying and screeching.
It was satisfying.
That would give them something to think about at least, for a moment, and maybe he could try to get another shot in on the larger beasts.

Curse these Guardians-forsaken creatures!
Lailah kicked one of the rodents into the air, a quick slash of her blade cleaving its head from its body. Though she was growing angrier and more frustrated as the battle dragged on, it seemed to only fuel her focus, making her movements more controlled, more automatic, smooth and sure, efficient...deadly.
In the chaos, she found Dante at her side, surprising holding his own rather well with his staff. She'd not thought he had it in him, but...seems the heat of battle was a surer test than any. The little pacifist seemed to be doing some decent damage. Heh.
She moved into his line of sight, motioning very quickly in one direction, then pointing to herself and the opposite direction. Simple enough: circle around and pincer movement; distract it so I can attack. Then, she was off, darting towards the smaller beast, weaving around smaller conflicts with her target in sight. As it turned away from her, she took the opportunity to strike, swift and hard at a gap in the creature's plating.
When her blade sunk into flesh, she put all her weight into the attack, driving the blade in to the hilt. The pain-filled scream from the creature was rewarding music to her ears. It was faltering, she could sense it. Before the creature could recover and counter, she withdrew her blade, dripping with foul fluids, and leapt back nimbly. This one couldn't take much more. "Finish it off!"

Attacking baby beast: 5 + 4 (attack) = 9
Dante's victory was short-lived, as the beast retaliated and nearly knocked him on the ground. He grunted as he skidded backwards. The beast hadn't cut into him that time, but he was definitely going to carry a dark bruise from that one. He gripped his staff in both hands and glanced around again before preparing another blow to the creature's nose. There was a certain...rush to this battle he hadn't felt during the sparring exercises, or even in that encounter in the swamp with the heretic queen. Here, he felt, he was truly doing the work of the Guardians, eradicating these foul, dark, twisted abominations. He almost understood Lailah for a moment.
But truly, he did like support work better. He felt like his place was on the sidelines to encourage and heal. Even though every weapon was needed here against these two monsters, he kept a weather eye on his teammates in case they needed him. And it was times like these he really wished he could shout over the noise of battle, make sure everyone was alright. His heart leapt up into his throat as he remembered Nephi, behind the great doors. What had befallen him since they had been here? Suddenly the image of the mangled corpses of Agnus, Elda, and Infernos sprang into his mind. Did Nephi meet the same fate? Dante gulped. He certainly hoped not. He preferred instead to think of Nephi sulking on the other side, disappointed that he'd been left out of all the fun.

Baby Beast CRITICAL HIT! Roll: 10 + 7 atk + 3 crit = 20 damage
The holy light aegis had protected the one-winged angel for only one hit. The next hit came fast and hard, so she had no time to defend herself. The second swipe slashed at her mid-section and pushed her back. She fell backwards, hitting her head on a large stone. She saw stars for a moment and briefly slipped into a semi-conscious state, disconnecting from reality. The urge to just close her eyes and stay there was strong. Her head was pounding, and she could barely hear what was going on through the sound of her heartbeat pounding in her ears. She closed her eyes tight and tensed before rolling her head. Anguish! And only an arms length away.
These beasts were only obstacles on the way to the real mission. They had to stop wasting time. But they also had to survive. Reaching for her ranseur, she used it to brace herself as she stood up. A rage burned in her eyes and Lailah's battle cry provided a boost for her resolve and she charged again, impaling the beast through his carapace, penetrating the cracked and vulnerable spot. The shell cracked and she used the force of the momentum to pull the weapon down by the shaft, effectively prying the outer shell open.
Alethea held strong, keeping her weapon lodged in securely so they wouldn't lose the chance to hit and critically wound, nay kill the creature. "Katya, Eligor, it's open!!" She shouted, knowing they were the most skilled ranged fighters and hoping their shots would be enough to finish it. She was only able to catch a glimpse of the pair preoccupied with the rodents, and hope went down a notch. "Clarux, hit it, we almost have it! " She was weakening, exposed to the taint, and covered in the horrid goo that leaked from this beast's every open wound.
Guardians save my poor, meek soul.
If she survives this, and she was considering the chances were getting low, she thought she'd be training twenty-four seven and never complain again. She would not let a situation this hopeless happen again, even if it killed her.
