Since some are genetic, what age would be appropriate. (I'm a teen as of right now)

Testing recommendations are usually based on risk more than on age. It's possible but fairly rare to get an STD without being sexually active, so you'd probably be considered low risk (unless you use needle drugs or might have otherwise come into contact with someone else's blood). But if you want to double check and be extra safe, then you can get an STD test at any time.

if you suspect you have something, get tested right away. otherwise, for most std's, get tested within 3-6 months of sexual contact that involves more than just mouth to mouth contact (unless they have something that can be orally transmitted). and if you are female, get a pap smear after 2-3 years of having vaginal sex for the first time. after that, somewhere along once a year to once every 2 years, get a pap smear.
