This is spoilerage for people who haven't watched up to the recent episode so it is in white below! SPOILER maybe:
Okay, Ed's dad and Ed were in the other side of the gate and it was like our world back in the WW2 era. Hoenheim, (Sp? [ed's dad]), said that the energy for alchemy comes from people dying in that world. So one of my questions is do alchemists cause death in that world when using alchemy or do they just use the existing energy created from people that already just died? Also, it was my understanding that Homunculi came from the gate or beyond it, so are they people that died in the other world or a personification of them? (Like a ghost or a memory of them?)When an alchemist tries to bring someone back to life a homunculus is created, does it kill the dead person's double in the other world? Or maybe when someone dies in Ed's world the double in the other world dies too and trying to bring the person back inadvertantly brings the double back as a homunculus? I'm soooo confused on this and most of it is just me guessing or hypothesizing.

Your kinda on the right track, yea I have a hard time understanding it all at first too, and still am. Umm... Your gonna have to look around on FMA sites to actually get your full answer about this.

Im thinkin that when ppl die on the other side of the gate their life energy is used when they use alchemy in Ed's world. As for the second question I don't think that works out since in the movie (spoiler) Al dies and nothing happens to the one in ed's world. He stays alive so im not sure that works out. They are like in a parallel universe i think so they don't really relate to each other in that way. Also in the anime Maes died and in the movie he was alive so that also is another way of seing as they don't interact in that way. These are just my observations of it.

i think it's like this...(im not sure so don't get mad if im wrong) i think that the energy used is from someone that is already dying and when an alchemist performs a transmutation the energy from that person goes to ed's side of the gate. as for the homunculi i do believe that it's that once all the components are already in the gate for the transmutation as long as you use the right circle and add the other components you can affix the body and as long as you dont try to bring back the soul it becomes a homunculi....at least thats what i think.

Tough questions But. Alchemy doesn't kill the people on the other side. Only human alchemy does. You remember in the 50th episode when Edward came back from the gate. The other edward had to die for him to come back. THE ENTIRE SHOW REVOLVES AROUND EQUIVILENT EXCHANGE. In order for Edwards to turn a ple of rocks into a sword he has to sacrafice the energy of the rocks. (like adom energy etc) The rebuild it into the molecule stucture of the sword. Just like the explination of alchemy in the first episode. The process of deconstuction matter and reconstucting it into something else. er, make sense?

Wow, I just recalled something. When I said that only human alchemy effects the other side of the gate. I don't know whether that correct or not but just basing off of information from the show. Anyway, on your question of does alchemy effect life there, Yes. Remember when Ed was walking away from Honenhiem and he got hit by a crashing plane? That Edward died and only when the second Ed die did Ed push his way back threw the gate. If someone in Alphonse's world dies. They are taken to the alternate selve's body. Have you ever heard the story about alternate realitly. If not here it is:
Some scientists think that there is a worm hole or a black hole or something that will lead to an alternate reality. (represented by the gate) And this world will be just like ours with alternate selves of everyone in this universe. There has been a story saying that there was a girl who was down stairs and she saw the flow of the gown on the top of the stairs so she went to investigate and when she went into the bathroom she saw in the mirror herself and died. It was caught on camera but i don't know whether this is true or not. And I don't if it is true that if you see your alternate self you die she could have just died of fright i don't know. So yeah, Just look up a lot about alchemy and this therum maybe the quantum theorem as well. (qt is about if our reality is real or not) uh so yeah, I probably just made more questions huh? Sorry! ^_^'

Heres how it works.... Lets call our world A and theirs B
When and if someone dies in A then the energy remaining in his body is sent through that persons gate to fuel alchemy in B. To constuct a toy horse you need the materials but you also need the energy to reconstruct the materials in the horse. Homunculus are made through a person attempting to ressurect someone in B, and a subliminal soul* enters it. The creation affects no one in A except that the subliminal soul comes from one the newly dead humans in A.
*Subliminal souls-the unneeded part of a soul in a body. It holds no kami or other spiritual entity.

when anyone dies in either world it is sent to the gate, alchemists get the energy for transmutation from things already in the gate, when a homonculus is born it is sent beyond the gate but because it is unnatural and endowed with special powers because of alchemy the strongest homonculi can escape and enter the world of alchemy as seen with wrath, both the original body and the second body beyond the gate of a homonculus are still there and either can be used for the destruction of said homonculus and the homonculus may re-cross the gate if so desired, as seen with envy.
