Eventually the book bats flitted off to go and bother somebody else, and Alex was left to try and sneak away once more. Turning to shamble away, he cast a quick glance over his shoulder to see just where Avery was

And then he tripped over yet another loose book on the floor, stumbled forward, and crashed head first into a bookshelf.

Woops!

When it rained, it poured, and Alex was never really much of a fan of water. Backing away from the bookshelf so he could continue to try and sneak away, he slipped on a piece of paper behind his foot, stumbled back, and hit a stack of somewhat neatly stacked books, sending them spilling all over the floor, a path of destruction left in the zomboils wake no matter what he attempted to do.

Not even bothering to look towards Avery now, he darted away.

Somehow, someway, an open path appeared in front of him, free of bookly debris and paperwork. He didn't run, because he almost never did, but he did shuffle along really really quickly.

He could almost see the exit looming up in the much too far away distance.

That hadn't lasted very long. .Soon book bats were swooping down on him again, forcing him to stop mid-quick shuffle, so that he was busy flailing at them to get away from him again.

Sigh.

The book bats weren't going anywhere, and apparently neither was Alex, who couldn't get past them and really really really needed them to just flutter away somewhere else.

"Aw, come oooonnn." He moaned.

Ah screw it! Alex surged forward, pushing past the book bats with force, and stumbled across loose papers, ran into book piles, and generally just created a new, fresh path of destruction for Avery to appreciate.

Was that the thunderous footsteps of a behemoth behind him? Gaining speed and catching up by the second? Alex did the only thing he could think of, grabbing for a nearby book and flinging it behind him towards Avery. He didn't even really look at it, he was just hoping that for whatever reason, it would slow the adult down so he could just get away.

Alas, it was simply not meant to be. Alex had given just one more glance behind him towards the librarian, the exit not just in sight now but looming up, only feet away. There was just one last short stretch to go, and it looked like he was going to make it!

And then he crashed into a bookshelf. Avery was quickly on him, apprehending him, and hauling him back towards the utter chaos he had sought to leave behind. The zomboils expression had become crestfallen. A quiet day in the library, that was all that he had wanted. Now he was actually going to have to -shudder- clean things??

Worst. Day. Ever.

Escape. Yin could do that, he was actually halfway decent at that. He shoved at a shelf, hoping to distract as much as letting out a tiny bit of rage held within him toward books in general, and watched in dismay as the shelving wobbled and them toppled toward him.

Ow.

Out of sheer desperation at the thought of working in the library for an entire week Yin grabbed the first book he saw and threw it at Avery. He barely even noted that it was old, just thinking it looked a bit worn out, but lucky for him it was something the librarian tried to rescue.

In his mad dash toward freedom Yin happened to glance over his shoulder. Avery seemed to be losing a bit of ground actually, until Yin's shoulder caught on a bookshelf and he staggered, trying to regain his footing and not just fall flat on his face.

There was honestly no reason for Yin to believe that knocking down another bookshelf would help his cause, not after books squashing him the first time. Still, when he saw a shorter bookshelf, he knew nothing could go wrong and it would be a great distraction.

Something went wrong.

As Yin scrambled to his feet he managed to see a clear path amid all of the destruction, a fair bit that he had caused himself. Leaping to his feet he charged in that direction, hoping for freedom. And at the very least no more books. He had had enough books to last him at least a year, if not his entire lifetime.

Oh Great Mantis Alexander would probably want his own library when they moved out. He was doomed.

Feeling fairly good about his lead on the librarian Yin chanced another glance behind himself.

Someday he would learn, but for now he accidentally rammed his other shoulder into a different bookshelf. That was probably going to bruise.

In his haste to get away and being completely distracted by wondering where Avery was, Yin managed to knock into yet another bookcase. Getting to his feet this time he realized something was wrong. He had been caught.

Of course he had no idea what he was actually getting in trouble for, but so far as he was concerned being in the library was awful and he was bound to have messed up something. At least with mending books he might learn something useful, but if he had to read said books? He was probably just going to drop out of school.
