001. New Beginnings Written 4 July 2013 Ashley stands in the middle of a court yard. Around her are more students, some just like her, scrambling with their suitcases trying to find their dorm room. Some have already made friends and are sitting on the grass with a bottle of wine, laughing together. Some don't need friends and sit with headphones and a pen and paper. Ashley stands in the middle of all of the elegant chaos, holding her rolling black and white polka dot suitcase close to her. Half a world away from her home, she has finally found a place she feels intimidated in. She feels her eyes begin to burn and she already misses her family, a broken family but a family nonetheless. As a tear rolls down her cheek, she notices one of the headphone wearing students looking at her. She tries to hurriedly wipe the tear off of her cheek, but the damage is done. Her weakness is seen. The other girl stands up and takes out her headphones, not even bothering to pause the music.
"Hey, I'm Sara. Big campus isn't it? It took me awhile to get used to it too." the girl is shorter than Ashley; in her hands she holds a sketchbook, drawings of students that Ashley herself had seen around the campus decorating the pages.
Ashley blushes, and looks at her shoes. Double tongued Converse, one tongue pink the other orange, so bright that they occasionally require sunglasses to look at. "Yeah, I guess it is pretty big. It's so... different."
Ashley looks around at the green grass, the huge buildings, the trees that look like they belong on a school campus just as much as the sidewalks do. At home, her high school was all brick and cement, the trees were on the outside of the high metal fences, the grass dead and yellowed. Here, it's as if the designers of the school wanted nature to coexist with the school; at home the two were kept very separate.
"Different can be good sometimes, right?" The girl's smile is surprising with its warmth.
"Yeah, I think it usually is," Ashley said, giving a slightly dulled reflection of the other girl's smile.
"Good. Now let's see what dorm you're in and get you set up." Sara takes the papers that Ashley was holding and begins rifling through them.
As Ashley watches Sara and smiles at the girl, she thinks to herself that maybe new beginnings aren't so bad. Maybe starting over could end up alright.
