Rehoming Entry: "Breaking Free"
The noise behind her escalated and there was nowhere left to run. What did she do to deserve this? Where did it all go wrong? Her heart thumped against her chest like some sort of bouncing sack of metal threatening to burst right on through. Though her face was turned away from what was coming towards her, she knew it wasn't very nice. The rocks she had pressed herself up against felt akin to a prison door that had just slammed shut, locking her inside. Was there anyone to help her? What was she going to do?
The noise suddenly paused, as if it had lost her trail, and she let out a sigh of relief. Good, it's gone, hopefully now she can move on! But, the question of where still remained. She had nowhere to go, nowhere to be, and nothing to work with but this stupid rock in her way! "Aaaaugh!" She cried, pounding against it. "What do I do?!"
Again, the noise behind her rose, this time faster and stronger. Fear threw a rock into her throat, numbing her means to scream, as if anyone would be able to hear her now. She pressed herself up against the rock and curled into a ball as her attacker approached. Violet eyes peered out from under the cover of her arms, and for a split second, a distorted version of herself could be seen towering above her, before it all faded to black.
She woke with such a start that her very body felt akin to glass. Her arms shook, her legs quaked, and her eyes teared. This dream was petrifying, and yet it happened almost every night. It was so vivid, so real, that each time she felt as if she had been sleepwalking and it all actually happened to her moments before. Why was she being put through such a terrifying dream? What sort of message was it trying to convey? Dual toned hair shook along with the head that held it as she flopped back onto her side, hoping to simply go back to sleep.
But she couldn't, not tonight. For once, the dream was beginning to make sense. She was out here alone, afraid for her life, which she had also been in the dream. The similarities to her life and her experiences in the dream were subtle, but none the less striking. In the dream, she was running from an unknown force that she was certain was out to harm her. She ran for cover, but couldn't find a source of help anywhere she looked, and had to settle for a useless rock to press up against. In the end, the enemy was herself, but it an angry sort of way.
The symbolism of the dream itself hadn't made one bit of sense until this very night. The rock was her staunch refusal to accept that she may need to rely on others, something preventing her from feeling safe and ultimately, happy. The noise in the background was a conglomerate of her fears and neglected needs of her inner self, they were screaming to her, calling out in the only way that they could without being stifled by her conscious mind. Last, but not least, the vision of herself as the enemy was her mind's way of telling her that she herself is what stands in the way of attaining what she needs to be happy. All of these terrifyingly confusing ideas had underlying meanings that took a long time to analyze and understand, but tonight, she had finally cracked the code. Finally, after what seemed like hours of insomnia, her eyes closed and whisked her back off to dreamland.
The noise behind her escalated and there was nowhere left to run... At least that's what she thought. The same old dream would now have a different ending. She ran and ran until she reached the same rock that she had been pressed up against many a time before. With fists balled and eyes narrowed, she took a fighter's stance and growled.
"I will no longer allow you to make me feel scared of others!" She screamed.
And just like that, the rock moved to the side, revealing a golden path behind it. She hesitated, until the noise behind her grew stronger, and she took off down the path. About half-way down she decided to take one last look back to see what became of her attacker, and what she saw made her heart jump. All that was left behind her was trees, the golden path, and a large brick wall, blocking all of the light and beauty from reaching the other side.
To this, she smiled. She was on her way to brighter days, no longer did she need to hide behind a brick wall. Fear still existed within her heart, but it was far better than living with the darkness on the other side of that wall. Now the only question that lingered was "Who should I talk to first...?"
