Oookay, so I'm lame and Awakening is the first Fire Emblem game I've played that includes the whole marriage shenanigans. I'm real stoked about it, it's just so fun to have all these options to play with and yeah, I wanted to know who you guys paired together and why. Just thought this would be a neat little thread to hear from good ole' FEF and hear the different outcomes ya'll have experienced. And y'know, maybe that FD will give me the tactical side of things as he always does. xD
I'll go first; I paired my Avatar (Arch) with Anna. 4-letter A-names ftw! I also thought it'd be neat since they're both unique characters (and I think Anna's personality is cute along with her appearance). A character who exists only as you want him/her to, and an omnipresent recurring character. +1 Movement is fun to hand down as well, I must say.
I paired Chrom with Sumia, but it was kind of an accident. Though I wanted them to get married anyway, so not much to say about that. *shrugs*
One last note, I don't really know the other games, so I would prefer to keep this thread based on Awakening. If you want to add a little something about another game that's fine, just try to focus on Awakening.

FE's featuring marriage are always awesome, I'm just going to say. So welcome aboard to a very fun feature! I also highly recommend FE4 if you ever have a chance. Onto Awakening.
I ******** LOVE Anna and am pairing MU with her as well. I can't have gay marriage in Awakening, but I can damn well have fabulous marriage via Anna. Going to reclass her to Sage later on, actually, to have my magical thief girl with the same fabulous staff utility. Her growths encourage favoring magic over other weapons anyway.
I did it because she's fabulous and I'm a very big fan of the RNG Goddess with her infinite clones. On that note, it's not a great move strategically. And here's the why:
Pairing with Anna is actually not the wisest move one can make with a Male MU since it only allows the MU to father one child whereas if he fathers the mother of another child, he fathers two children. Fathering two children is actually something of a big deal because parents pass on to their children all of their possible classes, so the children of MU can reclass to virtually anything possible for their gender. Which means a TON of versatility in-game and the ability to have just about any game breaking skill combination you can imagine for the post-game. Also worth noting, the only person the Female MU can pair up with to mother two children is Chrom. Limiting, but arguably one of the best pairings possible speaking in terms of in-game pragmatism.
Paired Chrom with Sumia also because it's incredibly easy and practical and also for canon points. Also justifies flying the Lord around, which is insanely useful compared to his other options. It's arguably his best pairing, although most mothers who CAN pair with Chrom want to. Other pairings I'm doing include:
Cordelia/Vaike: this allows Severa to inherit a male-only skill from Vaike, which is nice. Doubt I'll be using the kids very much this playthrough though. Eh. Too soon to tell. Cordelia and Vaike complement each other REALLY well paired up, too since Cordelia, as a peg, virtually ALWAYS doubles and the tremendous Strength Vaike gives her becomes twice the boon, while Cordelia's speed boost to Vaike allows him to much more easily double various things as well and much more reliably at that. Kinda my dream team. Been planning this one since long before I got the game and I am NOT disappointed.
Panne/Stahl. Because I'm using them both, and they're both physically inclined units. It's just pragmatic without too much thought behind it. The speed Panne provides Stahl helps him from getting doubled (Stahl eventually gets doubled once you're far enough into the game unless you reclass to Myrm, sorry to say; but he's a total tank and doesn't even care a lot of the time) Panne likes what Stahl gives her too, although it's more well rounded and not focused on really pumping something up. Getting Yarne is also a plus, because he's a sexy beast (get it; I made a funny ;p), although I doubt I'll use him.
Aside from that, it gets a bit trickier for me. And from what I know, the game difficulty is about to spike on me. So what other pairings I'll be getting this first Hard Mode run, I can't say with as much certainty.
Lon'qu will definitely be paired with someone. Whom, I don't know yet. I was hoping for Lissa, but it doesn't look like it's going to happen. Currently, I'm thinking Lon'qu/Miriel. She's been reclassed to Dark Mage because Sorcerors and Nosferatu, so the bonuses she gives actually focus much more on defense rather than magic, and are quite beneficial to Lon'qu. Meanwhile, his huge Speed boosts help her evade/double much more effectively turning her into an offensive killing machine.
I still have Tharja and Lissa to pair (and possibly Olivie and Cherche, too - there comes a point in this game where it throws a lot of great usable women characters at you but very few joining men around the same time, unfortunately), but I really don't feel compelled to marry them off. If it happens it happens, but I'm not holding my breath or anything. In FE4, marriage was effectively a necessity. In FE13, it's a commodity a lot of the times. An awesome one, mind you, but not necessary for the game itself. I wouldn't be using their kids even if I recruited them, more than likely. And since I plan for Lissa to go Cleric-->Troubadour-->Valkyrie, they actually team up with each other decently since it would make Tharja more mobile and Lissa more defensive while also boosting her magical competency. I suppose marrying one of them to Henry is an option if I decide to use him, but then I'd have THREE Dark Mages, and while I like the Sorceror class a lot, that might be too many to the point of being overly redundant. I guess I'll have to update later.
Just with Anna, Sumia, Cordelia, Panne, and most likely Miriel at the very least, that's already six kids (since Sumia is mothering two). There's no way I'd be able to incorporate them all even if I wanted to. And that's another good point to make about marriage in-game (post game is another story): making as many marriages as possible eventually yields diminishing returns, since at the end of the day you can't take everyone for every chapter. The stat boosts for A supports when paired up (including same-sex supports) are the same as those for S supports, too, so it's not a major loss on that front either. As it looks like I'll be picking up more female than male characters that I'll likely use, if they can support each other effectively paired up, I'll likely just work with that rather than pairing them inefficiently just for the sake of getting another marriage in-game. If I really wanted the kids I could grind for them post-game anyway.
EDIT: I noticed you mentioned passing down Move+1 with Anna. Sorry to say that can't happen and would be a waste of effort. MU's child is, except in rare cases, the starting class of the unpromoted version of whatever their lover is, and comes at level 10 with the 2 skills from the class, due to being at level 10, of course. Since Anna starts as a Trickster, that means MU's child with her is a Thief. Thus, MU/Anna's child will come with the two Thief skills BEFORE factoring in inheriting skills from parents. Passing on the two skills Anna starts with is redundant and actually is hindering the number of skills the child could have from the moment you recruit them. It's in your best interest to wait until Anna gets another skill and pass that one on.
Since the chapters for recruiting most of the prospective kids can be done whenever you feel like it, it's worth noting the skills they inherit from their parent aren't determined until you go into the quest, very conveniently.

The pairings that I'm working and planning are mostly based by their personalities and background (Some based from the support. I know, I know, I shouldn't look at FE Wikia. >>; ) as my main reason. My secondary is based of who I think looks cute. I wish I can give the explanation for each of the pairing why, but... due to those who don't have the game, it's best not to spoil and just stick to the first sentence I've written. >>;
However, here's a list of pairings that I'm working/planning if you're curious.Bold ones are based by the main reason while regular is secondary:
Chrom/Sumia (Same reason as FD's reason.) Lissa/Frederick Sully/Gregor Virion/Cherche Stahl/Panne Vaike/Miriel Maribelle/Gauis Libra/Tharja MU/Lon'qu
I'm still debating which male I can pair with the ladies who have children. However, I kinda wish that Flavia has a child because I kinda want a S support with Basilio. >.< As for the MU, I will admit that I was thinking of pairing with Frederick. But after receiving many bashes from him in the storyplot, it kinda makes me like "Fine then, don't have my baby!" >>;

Been some changes in my pairing line up. Why? Because I ******** LOVE HENRY. He's on par with Anna for favorite characters of mine in this game.
Finished: Chrom/Sumia Vaike/Cordelia Panne/Stahl MU/Anna
In progress: Miriel/Henry Tharja/Lon'qu
HENRY'S DIALOGUE. I LIVE FOR IT. And identify with it. I think I know who I'm marrying my next playthrough ;D

Hehehe, I do love Henry. I think it was you who mentioned making a MU based on an alter-ego of yours? One that seems to align Henry's behavior close to exact. At least, I think it was you.. His supports with Tharja are GOLD. I married them, so that makes 3 for me. (I won't spoil it, but I love the S-support when they get married. xD ) I'm not really too used to marriage, so I'm actually just going by who I think would be cute together like Isa. Because I'm a fanboy like that.. (NaruHina ftwwwww!!!) *Ahem* I will likely make another playthrough later on focusing on the specific boons of pairings.
As for your comment about +1 Movement, yeah, I had a thought about that the other day and was like "Oh yeah, Thief Class gets that anyway. :L" But since I re-classed her to Troubador ---> Battle Cleric she gets to keep the neat +1 Move her mommy was so nice to give her. Even though it's because her mother determines her class instead of inheriting the ability. I love it though, she's like a cute little lolita doll with a hefty sized axe. whee
And Isa, as long as you don't reveal plot aspects or the conversations I don't think anyone would really consider it much of a spoiler. It's not like you started naming the children. *cough cough*

Well this isn't exaclty what I'm PAIRING in my LP or my actual video, but its one of the guys I picked in my Japanese game soo...I'll just drop this here. Image hurGaiusxFe!Avatar. This need only three words from me. THIEF TO ASSASSIN. Always had a thing for assassin and a guy who loves sweets, can sew, craft jewelry AND bake/cook?? SIGN ME UP, I'LL TAKE HIM TO GO. x'DD As for my speed-run, power level file on my ACTUAL U.S game. I paired Chrom up with Olivia. Now, to be honest I'm not exactly a big fan of this pair, but they ARE cute and they make sense if you're able to view their whole support and NOT through the support library. Consiering if you actually get these two together, the only support you see....is their 'S' support...as a flashback...nnnnnnnoot quite as exciting. Never the less, if we're able to view their supports either way, D'AAAAAAAAAAAAAAW.

I know only one pairing I'm going with in my first playthrough, and that's Sumia/Frederick.
Mostly because both of them rub me the wrong way. I honestly have no idea why.

I like Gaius, he's like a top-notch drug dealer with candy instead of drugs. Always love that guy who knows all the trade secrets. I also like Assassins and I think they're actually good in this game. A lot of times they have bad caps, but they cap at 40 Str so you don't have to worry about lacking power. Also with reclassing you don't have to worry about the infamous Str Growth Rates thieves are so often limited with. Since given enough leveling everyone will be cap everything as far as I can tell. However, they have one of the least useful skill sets in my opinion, so that's a letdown. Lethality is rocking a meager 12% activation rate with maxed 48 Skill (Skill/4%). Pass is just... near worthless really.. It may come in handy but it's gimmicky and I'd prefer something I can use without depending on how my opponents move. Trickster by far takes first place when it comes to useless abilities, however..
Hahaha, most people just avoid using characters they don't like, but I like your style. xD I gotta wonder how it played out though..
I like to imagine it went something like this.. "I hate these 2 characters, but I already made the effort to train them... I know, I'll make them form a pact that will force them to suffer each other's presence for all eternity because they make ME suffer their presence."

Huh? I LOVE the Trickster class; it's my favorite new class, although Dark Flier is fierce competition. and find it's abilities very convenient. Acrobat might be strictly beneficial to non-combat utility, but when you're on maps with lots of forest and mountain terrain, you find Tricksters reach the party a lot sooner then many other units and thus contribute when other people can't catch up fast enough to do much.
And I find Lucky 7 is fantastic in-game on Hard Mode (Lunatic Mode... probably not as much with all those enemy-only skills that make dodging impossible). Maybe because I'm generally a very efficient player. The vast majority of maps took me 7 or fewer turns (the last two chapters took me two turns each - I can actually only think of two maps that took LONGER then 6 or 7 turns, and only because I chose to take longer for the sake of getting treasure) and Anna often encountered 0% hit rates in some of the very last maps partially courtesy of Lucky 7. I actually had Anna pass down Lucky 7 (Acrobat wouldn't have served the child since she'll eventually become a Dark Flier).

Its main use to me is rivers/water/lakes and mountains to a lesser extent. Forests never bug me much, and since this is my first playthrough (actually watching the credits now lol) I'm not rushing. I focus on speed whenever I play FE7. I even spam Rescue like no tomorrow with whichever Paladin(s), Priscilla, Heath, Pegasus I use. This game lacks a Rescue command, though Pairing Up definitely mends that a little bit. Still not as fast though. Too bad mounted units don't get the Canto ability or how it functioned similarly without in the GBA FE games. Rescue, then carry them a few spaces with whatever Movement left. That there is a big buzz kill to me.
The last Chapter I spent 22 turns leeching xp. xD
@Lucky 7, yeah I'm not a real big fan of it. Avoid/Hit abilities seem mediocre to me. They're good until you have other options in my opinion. But again, I have yet to try a Lunatic run so we'll see how I feel about it then...
And between Lucky 7 and Acrobat I feel like they just got cheated on skills. No boosted/reduced damage just some additional Hit/Avoid and some kind of utility (and not a great one at that). I mean, the Axebreaker ability is amazing in comparison! It's crippling, basically makes you immune to Axes. I'd rahter have any of the weaponbreaker abilities over Lucky 7 solely because you can abuse it. Which Axebreaker is from the Hero class which also get Sol, an awesome potential healing utility. And say your Hero has 40 Skill, that's 40% activation which is nearly every other hit, so almost once per battle assuming he doubles.
Also, Lucky 7 ironically seems to be the middle of 3 abilities that work Avoid/Hit over turns. But clearly the most useful, as the other 2 are near worthless. Still, after reclassing, Lucky 7 will be one of the last Abilities I keep on anyone.
Also, is there no way to play after Endgame? i thought there was, but it didn't let me Save, and when i hit Continue it took me back to Endgame.. crying

Now that I've actually played a lot of the game, I finally worked out some other pairings! MU/Chrom (because Lon'qu looked cuter with Lissa) Lissa/Lon'qu Maribelle/Vaike Sully/Kellam Cordelia/Ricken (I don't know how this happened, honestly.) Panne/Gaius Nowi/Gregor (She don't seem as childish in their support.) Still working on Sumia/Fred, but that's gonna take a while since I'm only using them on random encounters. Archolite Hahaha, most people just avoid using characters they don't like, but I like your style. xD I gotta wonder how it played out though.. I like to imagine it went something like this.. I actually just want to pair up all the female characters so I can recruit their kids. Even if I don't use them, I always want to recruit every recruitable character. And it kinda did go just like that. Their C-level support just cemented that idea.

You can keep playing infinitely, and all the Spotpass Paralogues where we get the final characters require having completed the second last chapter. For postgame situations, Lucky 7 does indeed lose appeal, I would agree. But when I'm estimating the use of things, I'm most likely measuring it's use during the actual game without any abuse, where I'm finished chapters in 7 turns or less for the most part and Anna can kill enemies without need for damage boosting from a skill usually. And Anna ability to take on virtually any type of enemy, not just ones that wield a specific type of weapon, and see incredibly low hit rates from the enemy was fabulous. Lucky 7 and Acrobat aren't boosting damage, but then, Trickster is the ULTIMATE support class, not a frontline fighter. Thief utility+Staff utility+increased mobility? When the selling point IS total utility, boosting utility is a plus for me. The last chapter was literally just moving everyone forward outside of enemy range on turn one. Spamming Rally Spectrum on turn two and Sumia ferrying Chrom to the boss courtesy of Galeforce with Chrom killing the boss in one attack due to an Aether activation. Fire Emblem is not known for final chapters taking much effort, though. Concerning rescuing, minus Canto, I find this game better and faster for transporting, and not just because of the stat boosts as opposed to stat drops. Plus there's the Rescue Staff which can be used on units that haven't. Have the slower person pair up with the person with more movement, move, switch, separate with the higher movement person ahead. Plus, Galeforce. Galeforce is just about the ultimate transportation tool aside games featuring a Warp Staff with unlimited range. Anyway, doing a second run now, this time on Normal Mode for shiggles mostly just for the purpose of unlocking support conversations with a female Avatar and using some different characters to say I've used them. Doing the following marriages: Chrom/Avatar Vaike/Sully Sumia/Henry Cordelia/Stahl Miriel/Ricken Cherche/Virion Maribelle/Libra Kinda regretted not using or finding room for Virion or Cherche previously, so I made sure to insert them this time. Also working on some additional marriages in my original run via post-game: Gregor/Cherche Maribelle/Ricken I guess Sully/Virion too, and whomever for Nowi and Olivia. Gonna be pairing up the second gen kids (the second gen kids look like they can marry too: yaaaay!) in due course. All just for getting started on unlocking supports. The more S supports I unlock on each file, the less I'll have to unlock later.

Yeah, I figured out the endgame shenanigans. Spamming Bonus Box at the moment, grinding up my units and getting all the kids. Got Vaike ready to marry Olivia, gonna pass on Despoil so I can buy mo' s**t. I got Renewal on Owaine, which I LOVE healing abilities. Reminds me of Pokemon and all the Dry Skin/Wish passing/Poison Heal shenanigans. Awesome for tanking too. I'll do another run after I finish making all my units awesome and OP or get bored and decide to make another run.
And okayy, you've definitely proven your point. I totally get where you're coming from as far as Lucky 7 is for Story Mode + Trickster Class uses it well. Though, I'm a p***k and grind throughout Story Mode anyway. >.> Galeforce is awesome! I really like that ability, currently only Nah has it for me. I had her marry Donnel for the Aptitude ability and changed classes to Dark Flier. She is probably my best unit when paired up. Galeforce makes her that much more spammable.
@Rescue/Warp, I haven't used them much ever. Previously in FE7 I have for some quick Chapters. Or to throw a tank in the middle of a field for XP leeching purposes. Or to pay Miss Anna a visit in her Secret Shop in the Chapter where you defend Ostia (3rd last Chapter not including Side Quests). Which btw, what an odd place to put a secret shop..
And for Virion, as soon as I got him, I was like "Yeah, not using you. You look plain and your +2 Skill is worthless). Like the friggin Sniper skill 'Sure Shot" back in Sacred Stones. I have NEVER made use of that and probably never will. Then when he popped up "Ohay, I'm semi-important" I was like "damn it...". Then he suddenly looked like twelve times cooler.
On a side note, I realized Sages cannot cross water tiles at all. So even with Acrobat Anna as a Sage cannot fly on water all jesus-style. That was a big letdown.. :c
