What I like to do (since I have no skills in meditation) is whenever my mind seems overly cluttered, I close my eyes and try and picture something that is relaxing to me, like a mountain meadow in the spring/summertime or the mist gently rolling through the forest trees with sunlight filtering softly down. Whatever thoughts and other images roll through my head during that time I just let them roll through, giving each a moment before letting them go. If they return, then I'll do the same....my book called "Animal Speak" has a section that relates to meditation. If anyone's interested in knowing what that section says, I'll be more than happy to share.
There's also loads of books out there about meditation, but I'd just say do whatever comes naturally to you.
