Do you think there should be courses that teach all about a certain culture? I think that is would be a great idea.
Instead of taking the same old, boring social studies course, students could choose from a variety of history/cultural courses. For example, there could be:
American Studies
Canadian Studies
Latin American Studies
African Studies
Middle Eastern Studies
South Asia Studies
Eastern Asian Studies
European Studies

And so on...What do you guys think of this idea and why?

Sounds like a spectacular idea; it is good to familiarise people with other cultures than their own.

It might work in the US but it wouldn't work very well in Canada.

In high school we're only allowed a maximum of 8 subjects per year and most of these are mandatory subjects like Math, English, Science, History, etc. Only in grades 11 & 12 do you get to choose the majority of your subjects, but I don't think that a lot of people would choose a Culture course because everybody goes for things like Computers, Business, Biology, etc (which are considered more revelant to our career choices). sweatdrop

I would take them if they had some though 3nodding

I can't fit all the science and math classes in my schedule I want, that comes before social studies for me. Here in the US we basicly take American history from the time we're little until we graduate, and that's all I've ever taken for the most part, except for some ancient mesopotamia and egyptian history in 6th grade. I won't even get to take World History. It's pretty lame.

I guess it wouldn't fit with certain districts. It is a lot of choice.

They already have those courses. Just gotta find the colleges that do

I think she meant having those options in high school.

Yeah it's cool. Although "European Studies" could be split down to a least west European/east European, considering the grave differences between most European countries.

That would be nice, but I don't think it's feasible. At least not unless they do major overhauls to the current educational systems I'm familiar with.

If you are lucky, you may live in a place that allows "gifted" high schoolers to take courses in college. This solves issues of finding people to teach such courses and people to sign up for them, but it's not available everywhere and to everyone.

Its a great idea- and its a shame that these sorts of classes are only available in college. People should really learn about other cultures much earlier. I think by not teaching other culture, we're only breeding an unwillingness to understand or immerse ourselves in different cultures- which allows things like racism and racial stereotypes to become more prevalent.

Not to mention... A language is meaningless if you don't understand the culture that goes with it.

At my school, we have Humanities, which is supposed to be an overview of all cultures.

However, if something like the courses you were describing were offered at my school, I doubt a lot of people would take them, honestly. Most students their senior opt to take early dismissal instead of a class. And if they do take a class, they are cramming their graduation requirements in. Like the foreign language classes. Or they are taking media arts just because "it's cool". I doubt that the courses would be popular enough to keep. Or at least, have a teacher dedicated to that sole class.

I think most language teachers also instruct in culture to some degree. At least all the ones I've had do. Also, lumping it together like that would be a bit too general. Cultures vary greatly from one country to the next, even when they share borders. Sometimes nations separated by hundreds of miles are more culturally simmilar than ones bordering eachother.

I think it's an awesome idea. I've met too many people who think the world ends at the British coastline.
Or maybe they should have it as a part of the languages course. Sure, they teach the language, but not really how people speak.
Some things I was taught in French I'd get my b/f saying, "no one would say that, it's better to say..." (something I'd never heard of, a French culture phrase).
