Why it should have been an offshore oil rig:
They're on wooden bases, the metal must be rusty and oxidizing out at sea, human's generally consider the earth 'theirs' and they're drilling into it for black gold with is a liquid so it doesn't hold shape.

Of course, there will be lots of RP to be had with these guys~
