107 Bunhill Rd,
London, England

A tall, nameless building stretches high into London blue skies and had undergone a series of changes over the decades. Originally it had been riddled with growing moss on its brick walls and surrounded by fig trees, then it was refurbished and molded of fresh rock and plaster then painted new and bold with scarce any foliage to decorate it. The building was nearly destroyed in the fire of 2021, the result of a duel between uncle and nephew. Afterwards, it had been rebuilt and glorified to its former luster. Until 2033 when it fell into despair and the moss and growing vines reclaimed what had once been theirs.

The building is usually protected and enchanted with the caterwauling charm, disillusionment charm, imperturbable charm, protego totalum charm, muggle repeling charm, stealth sensoring charm, and an undetectable extension charm, the building that had been fashioned as Remington's private office was heavily defended. But most of the enchantments have faded.

The inside is riddled with dust and cobwebs and seems to have been torn apart by someone in a hasty search. There is a staircase to the right that leads upstairs to the work bench, library, a practice room, and a vault room that had once contained his most prized possession of cursed artifacts and experimental spells and spellbooks, until it had been ransacked and emptied out. The first floor has an office with a waiting lounge and personal study.

"Have you ever known me to deny you?" The words spiraled in his mind, ascending higher and higher in the smoke and mirrors of his mind that it was soon lost to the abyss. It's all I could ever ask.

The sound of bone cracking ripped into the world as they apparated into a desolate alleyway in between a towering, unmarked building, and a simple London pub. Across the street was the familiar cemetery that decorated the names of some of England’s greatest minds. He beckoned her to follow with the smallest jerk of his head.

The building was heavily defended, no amount of burning down walls could tear the establishment down. But he didn’t need to do all of that. He slipped his wand out of his sleeve and transfigured a pebble on the ground into an old and rustic key. In another second, they were inside. Michelle’s very presence would alert the magic weaved in the office, but her pure of blood would trigger nothing volatile for the time being. The rich red wood furnishing glowed under the chandelier once they stepped inside. His Uncle Remington always did live ostentatiously. ”Contengo deprehensio,” he waved his wand, left to right, highlighting three different barriers that shimmered and glowed with spectral color.

”Don’t touch the shields, and follow me.” He led her up the spiral staircase, meandered past the work bench and snatched a few parchments unraveled there, before slipping past the small library and finding himself face to face with the great vault at the back of the hall. With his back to her, he slithered to the vault, whipping out his wand and removing as many curses as he could until all that was left was to unlock it, and then destroy the key. He took a step back and waited as the vault morphed, and the swiveling handle transfigured into a sphinx and spoke.

”What work can one never finish?” The sphinx demanded.

”…One’s autobiography.” Tay replied after a moment’s deliberation.

”What knight holds all truths and buries all lies?”

                                                    ”Ser Raymar.”

”Where had the line of power all began?”

Now, he had to think. This was certainly an odd question, one that could be interpreted too many ways. He glanced sidelong at Michelle, if he got this wrong, they’d both be damned. ”It began with Herleva Nott.” He held his breath, and smiled when he was met with the smallest c***k of metal grinding. He whipped out his wand and placed a curse on the sphinx to self-destruct the moment it was interrogated, and pulled open the vault. Hundreds of artifacts, tomes and scrolls of ancient magical theory, of magical experimentation and spell creation, of Cursebreaking secrets and alchemical arts—of knowledge and power.

¤¤¤¤¤¤Michelle looked around the spot to which they had apparated for a moment, before silently ghosting behind Tay. He seemed to know the place well and unlocked the door with a key transfigured from a pebble. Once inside he muttered a spell she didn't know and shields appeared shimmered in the air. ”Don’t touch the shields, and follow me.” She shrugged. It was simple enough. Still silent, she followed behind him up a twirling staircase and through a couple rooms before meeting a large vault. Yet again she wondered what exactly he wanted from here and why.

¤¤¤¤¤¤Michelle stayed back a little as he moved closer to the vault. When the handle morphed into a sphinx she raised an eyebrow but said nothing. The first question it asked was simple enough. The second she had no clue on, but Tay's answer was swift. Even after he gave it, she had no idea what it was. The third question, was even more unknown. It seemed even Tay was stuck on it and she began to wonder what would happen if he answered wrong. She had a feeling whatever it was wouldn't be good. The whole building seemed to be cursed, so she figured the door to a vault hiding who knows what would be bad news. After what seemed like forever and even a glance from Tay, he gave his answer. She held her breath, waiting for something bad, but instead the vault opened and she moved forwards. It was filled with piles and piles of all sorts of things. She blinked, and glanced at Tay. "What is all this?"

He smiled, earnest and true, but even that was riddled with the decay of his soul that tainted darkened features on his nefarious face. He could barely breathe, he was so overwhelmed with it all. He raised his wand and uttered a few Cursebreaking spells that she’d probably never even heard of before, unless she’d read ahead in her Cursebreaking text books. But even then, one or two of those spells were a family secret, and wouldn’t be found anywhere else. Quickly, he meandered along, sliding his fingers over the frail and dusted ancient tomes, and unraveling scrolls briefly before sliding them into the dragonhide knapsack he’d summoned with his wand. ”My uncle was the Cursebreaking professor for a few years; you may have met him, but, I think he resigned the year before you were allowed to take electives…

“He owns a shop in Knockturn; he’s gifted in Cursebreaking, and more notably, creating curses. Over the years, he’s studied abroad, in Romania, Russia, Poland, Ukraine, Brazil, Egypt, Spain, France…. Collecting anything and everything he could.

“This…. This is all knowledge. The secret to the Dark Arts, the magical theory of creating spells, the lost art of magic practiced by pureblood families shortly after the Statute of Secrecy had separate wizards from muggles; and those families pure of blood had to choose between Wizarding hierarchy, and the British royalty. Ancient magic long forgotten, alchemical secrets…. Everything. Everything.”
He explained as he snatched every scroll he could, stole every text, every handwritten book of his uncles, everything, and dropped it into his enchanted knapsack.

”This is a pensieve; those are my uncles prized cursed artifacts, family heirlooms, riddled with magic long since forgotten. And these, are my uncles memories.” He gestured to the bookshelf of mist filled vials, every shelf labeled, and he particularly stole the ones upon the shelf labeled “Guiseley Ray Nott nee Flint”.

”Guiseley……. She’s…. She was mother.” Was all he explained as he took every last vial.

¤¤¤¤¤¤Michelle blinked as he smiled. She was almost positive she'd never seen him smile so honestly. Quietly she dragged her attention away from him and back to the vault and it's contents. She followed behind him as he entered the vault and began picking things up and putting them in his bag. As he spoke she blinked in surprise. They were stealing from his uncle? 'Stealing... sounds like a great way to family bond...' She thought, with a tiny smirk. She had met his uncle once when he subbed for her transfiguration class, but sadly when she went on to take Cursebreaking, he had left the school. She blinked as he started pointing at things and listing off what they were. Most of it just flew in one ear and out the other. She tilted her head, reading labels on the vials curiously, until he picked one up specifically.

¤¤¤¤¤¤"Was?" She asked, blinking and tilting her head to watch him instead. "You're mother is dead?" She asked quietly. It was new information. To be honest, she'd never heard Tay talk about his family period. She wondered, briefly, why he didn't talk about his family. Then again he didn't talk about anything personal very often, and yet somehow still managed to get information from her that she didn't share with anyone.

He nodded his head gravely, gold eyes lingering upon the veil of silvery mist confined to the last vial before he decidedly slid it away into the confines of his bag. There were still so many things—too many books in their cases and artifacts in display. But he had all that he truly needed. ”She was murdered shortly after I was born,” he explained, but it was all he could say because it was all that he knew. The remains of his mothers’ past life had been a close guarded secret that not even his father knew—and he planned to expose it.

Whatever it was that had happened to her, had played a great part in his life, and whatever it was, had tainted his soul. ”Everyone had always told me she was a saint…” A part of him wondered why he was even saying any of this, but, another part of him realized he didn’t care. ”But it was all a lie. Whatever it was that she’d done, she’d gotten herself killed for it…”

And whatever it is my aunt had found out…. Might’ve killed her too. But he tried not to dwell on that as he swiped to last of the ancient and dusty scrolls and tucked them away. ”My uncle won’t have the slightest idea who could’ve robbed him—only a Nott would know these secrets—but your blood here had already broken that protective charm, letting him know if intruders really had broken in…” He shrugged his shoulders as he glanced over his shoulder towards her, and then slipped outside the vault, closing it behind them.

¤¤¤¤¤¤Michelle followed behind him silently as he spoke. She feared that if she said anything, he would stop telling her things, and so she stayed quiet, watching him with curious silver eyes. His mother was murdered... What, she wondered, could the woman have gotten into that resulted in her death. Still silent she followed Tay out of the vault and nodded as he explained why he had brought her along for this expedition. She was still pondering what to say about everything he had just told her. She continued in silence, walking close to him. They were still robbing a place, whether it be Tay's uncle or not, and she liked the fact that if it came to it, she could use him for protection. As if on cue with her thoughts, she swore to god she heard a noise, similar to that of a door opening. Immediately she tilted her head, trying to catch another sound like such. Had someone come to crash their party right as they were about to leave? Automatically she slid a step closer to Tay, her fingers sliding over the the shaft of her wand superstitiously.

There was a moment of wretched silence that pierced through the thin walls of the building, skirting up the stairwell and breathing a new life into a world of decay. The youngest Nott had heard it too, and as his golden eyes ravaged across the room, sparing just a second to take heed of her hesitance too, before he slowly, silently, slipped his wand out from under his robes.

Somewhere downstairs, Remington Nott had done just the same thing. The elder man hadn’t had need for the magical protection, so it seems, because he could feel presence of another mind literally bursting within the room. Who, or why? He did not yet know.

Almost at the same time, it seemed that the young heir had turned to silver ghost at his side and stared at her, mesmerized. He hadn’t at all planned for the man to actually slither inside while they were still here. Hell, he hadn’t planned on his uncle returning to the office for at least a few days. Steely gold eyes urged her on as they danced to the window where the fire escape lurked leading down to the alley or above to the roof. ”Run.” It was all he could say before—

BOOM! The floorboards beneath them shook, splintered, and crumbled from a horrible blast of magic from down below. BOOM! Another explosion roared and deafened their ears, bits and pieces of the redwood furniture splattered up the stairs.

”Protego totalum,” Tay’s voice crashed against the world.

”Confringo!” Remy’s voice echoed from the floor below.

¤¤¤¤¤¤Michelle felt Tay tense beside her, and tightened her grasp on her wand, staying close at his side as they moved towards the window. She blinked as he told her to run and the moment after the floorboards shook and she almost lost her balance at the sudden movement, having been previously moving light on her feet. Silence was a trick she had learned quite well, but it came at the price of being easily knocked over. She has just barely caught herself when another explosion rocked the floor, furniture shards everywhere. She lifted her arms to protect her face, and muttered, "Aurumflamma." Her affinity for fire spells came in handy, as golden flames shot from her wand towards what she presumed to be Tay's uncle attacking them. With the slight distraction of the fire, Michelle hopped onto the windowsill and dropped onto the fire escape. Her first thought of course, was to climb down, but that also made it the most obvious choice. She licked her lips, and in a split second was rapidly climbing up the ladder and pulling herself onto the roof. She waited silently for Tay to join her, spinning her mahogany wand in her fingers, and examining her now even more damaged skin. To go along with the older wounds from her step father, she now had shards and splinters of red wood sticking out of her arms. "Lovely...."She muttered.

”Expulso!” The second floor crumbled, the floorboards withered and rotted away to decay, turning to ash under the pressure. ”Meteolojinx!” The deafening voice was drowned out by a burst of furious winds and caustic snow, thick and heavy. It exploded from the ceiling and engulfed the room; the thickening blanket of ice crushed down until the weight was too much too hold and the entire floor gave way.

Both Nott’s became lost, one in a bout of fire, the other in snow. It hadn’t taken long, however, for the one to charm the fire, and the other to burn the snow.

Remington growled as he ripped off his robes that hindered him as he tore through the freezing slush that drowned the first floor towards the steam of melting snow growing dense and heavy in the chaos of the room. Hurtling himself forward, his maddening breaths propelling anything in his path away from him.

Meanwhile, hidden under the cloud of white steam, Tay’s thoughts panicked. He didn’t know what to do.

All at once, both men raised their wands and in rapid fire succession, the glint of a thousand blades appeared. Remington fired with an arrow firing spell, and Tay responded with the wave of his wand, transfiguring smoke to daggers as they lurched forward and struck every arrow full force. He could feel the cool kiss of metal snaking in his skin and digging in.

The snow still gyrated all around like the gods had blustered it forth from their lips. Neither one could see, the toxic ice tore at the eyes and ripped at their flesh as they regained themselves and dropped down their protective ward for just the moment.

Before their eyes met, Tay ripped his wand forward and growled. ”Expulso.” Into the beam that held the building up so that it exploded, and the whole place came crashing down. The roof caved in, and the foundation crumbled. Both men shouted as they dove.

But Tay ran headfirst into it, knowing Michelle would be somewhere in the midst of it.

Remington cursed and recoiled, cracking his wand forward as he apparated himself to the safety outside. And all the while, Tay rose his wand above his head, hoping his shield would stand strong as he fought the ferocity of the blizzard inside of the building which soon died as the walls fell down and a cloud of dust swallowed the street. Somewhere, Michelle was tumbling down to the earths destruction.

Remington stood, bloody and shocked at the aftermath. The entire building simply dropped like a deck of cards. He had no idea if anyone would still be in there, hidden. As the muggle authorities became alerted and a crowd formed outside, he growled and fled to the shadows apparating away to his shop where he’d have to decide if he should alert the ministry or not….

¤¤¤¤¤¤Michelle could hear spells firing off at eachother beneathe her feet and rolled her eyes. Of course. He tells her to run and then gets into a fire fight with his uncle. She was just starting to put her wand away when suddenly there was a loud explosion and the roof literally caved in under her feet. She screamed as she suddenly started falling. Immediately she started reaching out, trying to grab onto anything that stopped her free fall into a falling building, but everything she grabbed onto just fell with her. She hissed in annoyance.

¤¤¤¤¤¤Her first thought was to wonder if Tay had gotten out of the building before it started to collapse. Her second thought was to curse the man out for collapsing the building she had been standing on. She preferred the idea of not being crushed to death, but that seemed to be the only likely turn of events now that she was crashing down with said building. Another scream flitted from her throat as a piece of falling roof hit her in the back.

Hidden under shredded wood, chunked concrete slabs, crystal and glass, Tay struggled out from under the debris. His wand was still in hand as he emerged, gasping for air and thrashing against the shattered remnants of the wooden foundation and sloshing against freezing waters from what was left of the melted snow that had disappeared once the building came crashing down. His robes were thick and heavy and sloshed water and snow and he was dripping wet, but for the most part, he was unharmed. His shield had absorbed every fatal blow but could not prevent him from being buried underneath it all. Somewhere amidst all of the rubble, he found Michelle hidden somewhere in the shadows. The sun was hiding its face on the edge of the world and dusk was nearly upon them. He could hear the alarm of muggle sirens and idly wondered why his uncle had had his office in this muggle London district.

He didn’t have time to dwell on it, however, because he kneeled down, wiping away the droplets of sweat, blood, and snow, from his forehead before he scooped up the young girl in his arms and apparated home. He couldn’t go to the island—he knew that’s exactly where his uncle would go.

                                                    [[Exit to Nott Castle??]]

Maybelline Johnson
Inquirer of the Daily Prophet

M
aybelline’s contacts had reported of suspicious magical activity in the muggle districts of London, and she’d lurched at the chance to investigate. After all, the sudden rise of evil had had its mark on the front pages and they’d made a killing in sales. She was even starting to get noticed on the streets, she’d reflected with a smirk on her lips as she lowered her hood over her head and turned down the block of Bunhill Road. Several people lined the streets, most of whom she could assume were muggles, as they analyzed the fallen building—and the uncanny amount of what looked like melting snow in the core of the building.

Muggle police had already begun to barricade the building by the time she’d hurried up to the tape line, after a few bouts of annoying interrogations she discovered on key detail…

This was Remington Nott’s private office… Perhaps she needed to pay him a visit?

[End of Summer 2024]

The building was rebuilt, William noticed immediately as he turned the corner around the pub and caught sight of Bunhill Road. The cemetary in the distance had scarcely been touched by the rubble and fire that had taken the building which housed his brothers office several years ago. He knew the talents of his family’s work when he heard it, he wasn’t stupid. Luckily, the muggles hadn’t seen much and obliviators were never neccessary in the endeavor, and still, it’d caught his ears. William stood at the doorway, waiting. Should he knock? What if Remington was home? Then what? He breathed a deep sigh as his stubby fingers curled into a tight fist and knocked on the door. When the silence was unbroken, he knew it was safe. The wand tucked in his coat was hidden under the inner breast pocket, and the man threw a ginger glance over each shoulder. He never understood why his brother worked so close to muggles, despite how much he claims to despise them. But he couldn’t argue that hiding in plain sight had had it’s benefits over the years.

A simple wave had unlocked the door, and he was inside. He’d been here hundreds of times before, on official investigations and on leisure afternoons with a bottle of whiskey in his hands. The brothers were never very civil, but they could drink together without fighting, and that was a miracle of itself. He strolled up the stairs and past the piano that his brother had loved, the man owned one in every home, for ******** sake, it was ridiculous. William knew his brother couldn’t be playing it so often to need four of the bloody things, but now wasn’t the time to dwell. The safe was hidden in the furthest room, behind his office desk and locked under key. But William, of course, being the brother he was, had had his own spare key that not even Remington knew about.

He slid within the vault once the door creaked open, the stainless steel floors hummed with a vibrancy of magic. He could taste it. Past the family heirlooms stolen from the vault in Gringotts, and who knew what else here was stolen, William shook his head, it wasn’t what he wanted. ”Remington-! What... What are you doing here.”

”I could be asking you that too, brother.” But William knew the surprise was evident even in his younger brothers voice.

”Well, surely it’s the same reason you’re here.” He insisted.

”He found them, y’know.... the vials,” William blinked as Remington leaned against the wall and drummed his fingers against his crossed arms.

”I figured as much... But he doesn’t know the truth.” He blurted. He didn’t know why he was telling him this. But he deserved to know, to be prepared.

”......what are you talking about.” William could see it; Remington wasn’t amused to hear that.

”You never were the nostalgic b*****d, were you, I tampered with those memories. They’re fake. I have the real ones....” William visibly tensed. His wand arm stiffened, but Remington hadn’t made a move. ”He thinks you killed her.”

”.....Y-”

”I told you to destory them.”

”I-”

”He’ll never believe you.” William swore he saw a flash of fear in his brothers eyes.

”You know he’ll kill me.”

”....I was hoping for it.”

”..Get out! William didn’t hesitate; he knew when he’d over stayed his welcome. And he knew any moment longer, the building just might’ve have crumbled again.
