Hey!

Was wondering if you guys wanted to do another contest? If so, which? Avatar? Mixed? (Photography, craft, etc.)

I was also wondering about getting the place a bit more active outside of the What Did you make thread.

I'm not sure about everyone else, but I never get new post notifications in guilds, so a lot of new threads go by me. Is this the same for everyone else? If so, what are thoughts about closing the subforums and having the main forum be the hub? Any other ideas?

I have a similar experience with notifications as you and think its a pretty good idea to use the main forum as a hub. I will do some serious thinking about fun threads and submit them to you (or here?). What about discussing a plant / animal of the week (or month)?

Contests are always fun!

We could also try something like an "-along" where we pick some sort of craft, preferably something that represents the guild where we all work together on it.
Some green craft ideas I googled quickly.
A possible resource.

Maybe some of that is useful?

I love the idea of contests. Yes to all of the above contest suggestions. The avatar ones we did last time were fun. Grow-alongs and craft-alongs are fun, too. I kind of remember that we had an avocado grow-a-long a long time ago that several people participated in. Tomatoes could be fun.

I've been holding out on a contest idea I have had. I'll explain the idea and then I'll explain why I haven't acted on it yet. I found this website, CarbonRally, which has several different eco-friendly challenges and the estimated amount of CO2 a person would avoid generating by participating in the challenge. Participants can register with the site (just needs an e-mail, no personal info) and get a profile that tracks the participant's progress toward current goals and estimated total savings. Participants can also form teams and track the team's CO2 savings. There are tons of leader boards (top weekly team, individual, top individual within the team etc.) I was thinking we could create a team page and profiles and award prizes here based on our team leader board there. I created a profile for me and tried the site out. The challenges range in difficulty and cost, so there are things everyone could try. The site functions fairly well. I opted out of all the e-mails and wasn't hit with any spam. The community seems reasonably active and positive. The only real drawback (other than it is outside of Gaia and I don't know how everyone feels about that) is that the devs seem to have abandoned it about a year ago. The links to their blog are dead. There have been no new official challenges since last March. (There are, however, many unofficial challenges posted by users in the workshop that we could work with if we wanted, and many existing official challenges open to choose from.) I just don't know if they plan on keeping the lights on or if one day it will just be gone with no warning. I could port pieces of it into a thread of our own here and cut them out entirely, but it would take a LOT of work (and I would have to scale the thing way down to make it feasible). Or, we could just set up a team there (with an explanation and prize thread here) and see what happens. Assuming enough people here are interested, of course. Thoughts?

As for the subforums, I like them and would vote they stay open. I agree, though, that we have been focusing a bit too much attention on one thread while ignoring the main (and sub) forums a bit lot. I don't mind posting in the main forum for now to get some discussions going if you want. I don't think I get notifications for guild topics (at least that I remember or pay attention to) unless I am quoted and then I see that someone has quoted me. I do recall seeing notifications now and then about somebody joining the guild.

I use the Guild landing page function where I can see the 5 most recently posted-in topics, and I am fairly sure I haven't ever missed a thread here. The good thing about a slightly less active guild is that it makes it much easier to keep up-to-date with. I don't need to check every subforum, since I can see that there isn't anything new in them from the Guilds page. If I notice it is full of new posts, I might check to see if I missed any, but it rarely is.

I love the idea of contests and things, but unless they lasted a ridiculously long time, we might not have many participants, seeing how slow the guild is. The only notification I have of new threads and replies, besides the main Guilds page, is when new Guild Announcements are posted... which we don't exactly do, lol.

I vote for the subforums to stay open, but maybe for the time being (until we generate some new activity) all new threads should be posted in the main forum, then when they die down we can move them into the appropriate subforums? That way we don't lose the valuable information we've already discussed there, but it's still easy for us to see the new stuff.

I've also considered the idea of reviving some of the old threads, the ones with more general discussion topics rather than just a question that's already been answered. Some of the newer members might have some good insight on them, and the ones who posted in them before may have more to say now? Maybe we could pick one or two from each subforum to move to the main forum?

And, I know this would just be more work for someone, but maybe we could have a monthly or every-other-month-ly update on what's going on in the forum? If this was in the form of an announcement all the guild members would be notified of it, and it might spark some interest. It wouldn't have to be fancy, maybe just a list of new threads or most popular threads, and whatever contest(s) is(/are) running at present.
