The year is 2655. The world ended nearly two centuries ago when a virus came and killed many of the human race. More than a third were killed by the virus, but the problem with it was that they didn't stay dead. Maybe they never really died to begin with, as the virus had mutated their DNA to make them something from the nightmares of superstitious middle age farmers. The infected rose as soulless, bloodsucking vampires. None so pretty as the belle morte that many had come to expect, but deformed and ugly wraiths and wretches. Even the weakest of them was faster and stronger than a normal human. Their thirst for blood led them to hunt upon the humans that were so easily captured. Some scientists were working on a vaccine for the disease that had claimed so many, and it was put into effect when the true nature of the virus was revealed. But the vaccine had an unforeseen side-effect. It released massive doses of a bodily created toxin into the bloodstream of some people, driving them insane and causing mutations in them just like the virus did. The people ran away and weren't heard from again for some time. Not until the mutations were complete. Their fingernails had lengthened and strengthened, and they had become stronger and faster and hair stood out clearly upon their bodies, but their minds were completely gone. They had become feral. They to hunted the human prey, though never as much as the vampires. An unexpected benefit of the antivirus was that, whenever the two mutations met, they would turn their full attention on one another, until all the others were dead. The downside was that now the humans were hunted on two fronts. A hundred years passed and technology regressed. When the power guns ran out of cells, they could no longer replace them, when the projectile firearms ran out of ammunition, they couldn't make more. Only the circuit powered, turret based guns worked, but they could only be operated while on their power conductor, and those who were capable of repairing them were few and far between. They couldn't be used out on a trip, either. Humans regressed into making older types of weapons with newer technologies. And so it was that humans learned how to survive the attempted extinction of their race. Humans started rebuilding again, but now they had a natural enemy.
