There's certainly satanic cults based off low self-esteem, teen rebellions, etc. Personally I think these groups are completely laughable and they need to get a hold of themselves.
There's also the laveyan crap of "no, we're nice kids that kiss little babies and save puppies". You get into anything real though, and you have the virgin sacrifices, demonic possessions, and true devil-worship.
Each of these is really only bound together by everyone else using the same name.

The only reason any LaVeyan would do either of those things is because children and animals are seen as the highest forms of the Satanic Ideal, pure instinct. as for "Real Satanism", since we are the only ones with an organized religion, I think we qualify as "real Satanists". Those pissed off Christians (actual Devil Worshipers) give us a bad name.
