A good T.V show to watch (If you have Access) Is Let's Learn Japanese. It's oldish...but it's still really good. It has skits then it tells you what they say and repeats important things.

I can count up to 9999. -dies.-
Confusing, I tell you. o-o;
Yon can also be Yo and Shi. (Changes when you're telling time, usually. As goes for the next few.)
Nana is also Shichi. (Nana for time..)
And Ku is also Kyu.. (Ku for time.. )
I learned it - Ichi, ni, san, yon, go, roku, shichi, hachi, kyu (- Instead of ku.) , ju for regular... Nana, Yo/Shi, and Ku are for time, that's what my sensei says. (Changes for some other things I think, too.. not sure yet. xD)
To go a bit farther try this. 21 would be. Nijuuichi. (2, 10, 1. ) Therefore, if you're following the same pattern.. 75 would be... Shichijuugo (7, 10, 5.)
So basically, if you can count up to 20, you can count up to 99 using this pattern..
That should keep you busy for awhile. :333

It's pretty cool that you can count to twenty in Japanese! I have to pause and think about it since some of the numbers have two ways of being pronounced (like 4:shi し or yon よん, 7:nana なな or shichi しち, 9:ku く or kyuu きゅう). But I think my all time favorite was when I was able to write down the numbers from one to ten in kanji! 一、二、三、四、五、六、七、八、九、十! I was so happy with myself, I showed my mother... who was about as thrilled as a cabbage. Oh, well. rolleyes

Seisuke 100 hyaku basically you use the same idea Hyaku ichi 101 hyaku ni 102 Hyaku san 103 Hyaku Yon,Chi 104 Hyaku go 105 Hyaku juu 110 Hyaku Ni juu 120 Hyaku kyu juu kyu 199 Ni Hyaku 200 San hyaku 300 Yon Hyaku 400 Go Hyaku 500 Roku Hyaku 600Nana Hyaku 700 Hachi Hyaku 800Kyu Hyaku 900 Kyuu Hyaku kyu juu kyu 999 Sen 1000 ni sen 2000 etc... Hope this helps at least thats how i learned it There are some exceptions, and you'll get funny looks if you say the bolded things. They are, instead: Roppyaku (600) Happyaku (800) (The dashes present in between the Japanese words are to show where you would connect; they wouldn't normally be present when writing romaji.) A few more rules/exceptions that weren't present in the last post Hassen (8000) "Shi" and "shichi" should only be used in the ones place, whereas "yon" and "nana" can be used in the ones place or other. Ex: 44 is yon-jyu-shi or yon-jyu-yon. 77 is nana-jyu-shichi or nana-jyu-nana. As was stated by someone else, time and other ways of counting change the way the numbers are said (and sometimes change the numbers completely!). Just wait until you try counting things or people. Edit: A few time notes - 4:00 - yo-ji 4:04 - yo-ji-yo-ppun 7:00 - shichi-ji 7:07 - shichi-ji-nana-fun 9:00 - ku-ji 9:09 - ku-ji-kyu-fun

I learned Shi,insted on Yon when your just plain counting, but if you are saying there are 4 things then you use yon, same for 7 'n' 9. Or at least that is what I learnt.
Anyway now that you have got the basics,it's easy to advance it, (as was said above)

This is how I was taught the numbers( but I was taught by a American 5th degree black belt Aikidokai, but my spelling might be wrong stressed ):
Ich Ni San Shi (or Yon) Go Ruk Sitch Hotch Cu Ju Ju ich Ju ni Ju san Ju shi Ju go Ju ruk Ju sitch Ju hotch Ju cu Ni ju etc. etc.
I'm wondering about the changes in the Americanized version from the true Japanese version.
