So I don't know what the Quran reads, but I doubt what others have told me. Apparantly the Quran teaches for the followers to prosecute the non-believers... I was given this site to look at and I don't know what I think. Considering I have never read the Quran, I don't really believe this.

Are these even real passages? That's my first thought. How easy could it be to make up a passage and have people believe it especially when many people haven't read the book. Really easy.

I haven't read the Quran either, but I'm guessing it's bs. Islam is still an Abrahamic religion for one thing, so I don't see why it would be any more condoning of violence than Christianity or Judaism. And there was that one time I went looking online for an unbiased translation of it to read, on some of them there were quite a few reviewers upset that their holy text had been mistranslated in just such a way.

Assuming those are real passages, I'd say the author of that particular site is rather biased and likely took more than a few quotes out of context. The gaps in the passages...unnerve me, and provide a basis of doubt. But the sheer quantity of passages posted kinda balances it out to me.

I havn't read the Quran either, by the way, and am thus hardly qualified to talk about this. I think your answers would better lie in a reliable book in a nearby library instead of anything on the internet. Simply because it's an internet site that isn't part of any organization that I'd call credible, I estimate that at least half of the entire site is bs.

That's why I really doubt this. The internet is full of misleading informaion and purposely biased sites. I have a feeling this person is a fluff in this matter though. He's calling all Muslims extremists and says that's where the entire religion is headed... Also said they are trying to force their ways on European countries, which I highly doubt also...

I don't think the library on base would have a Quran though sweatdrop Even though they technically should.

@ Kreazdor I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks the site is BS. Even though none of us who have posted have read the book, it is still good to know that there is not such biased hatred for a religion that is purposely being mistranslated and misunderstood.

As someone who is not only friends with a Fundamental Muslim residing in Egypt and as an individual (i.e. myself) required to read the Q'uran in a college course I can say it's a load of crap. Islam calls for violence no more than Christianity or Judaism.

You have to bear in mind verses (for the lack of a better word...I think they're called "surrahs" or something like that. If I'm mistaken please correct me) from various holy books have been taken out of context since historic times began. The trick is to look at the verses around it to get the full context. One verse he points out is really about personal struggles if I recall correctly. People do this with the Bible all the time: pick out a verse, ignore the other verses, and use that to justify something.

Also, if you look up the info on the domain name and IP address as given in the following:

http://www.networksolutions.com/whois-search/thereligionofpeace.com

there's not much info about who owns the site. In a day where anyone can buy a domain name it makes the person's credentials more questionable.

That is a site which hates islam and takes things out of context.

Also, to understand the Qur'an one must know the history of WHEN it was revealed. The Qur'an was revealed to Prophet Muhammad over a span of 26 years (IIRC) And what the Qur'an says suited the needs of new Muslims at the time.

Yea, I brought up that people pick and choose and translate from the bible and almost every other religious book the way they want to. He ignored that and quoted a bunch of those verses. This just proves even more that the person who gave me the site is a either a fluff or extremists all their own. Or just an a**, which I have decided before this incident. I'll let the other person deal with him this time.

Aha! I love Google. Anyways, I've found a perfect site that does the same thing for the bible that, that site does to the Quran. Check it out. I think this is pretty good proof that anything taken out of context takes on an entirely different meaning than when it is in its appropriate paragraph.

Is there violence in the Qur'an? Yes. Does the Qur'an actively advocate violence - no, not really.

Taking a quick skim through that site, I would say that the creator decided to pick and chose passages with out context to create his own message.

Violence is very clearly allowed in self-defense, and the early followers of Mohamed where definitely persecuted. Many of those passages refer to instances where the early community needed to fight in self-defense. Arabia was also, at that time, a fairly violent place to live, period.

My exposure suggests that the majority of the Qur'an focuses on re-iteration of Old and New Testament stories and teachings, humanity's relationship with God, and codifying of various civil matters (e.g. inheritance law).

Peace towards "people of the book" (Jews and Christians) is encouraged. They are not to be persecuted.

Admittedly, I am not a scholar of Islam, nor of Middle-Eastern History, so there may well be additional context which would refute what I have written, but I find the site linked above propagandist in nature.

I am a Catholic and have never read the Qu'ran before, but I believe that Christianity, Judaism, and Islam worship the same God, but in completely different ways. But the Qu'ran does not advocate violence, it is a Holy Book that teaches peace and how to live a good "Muslim life". The Qu'ran does have some verses that seem violent, but if you read the whole thing, it makes perfect sense. For example, some terrorist leaders (that are Muslims ' A'l Queda, Hezbollah, etc") use verses from the Qu'ran that seem violent because they do not use the whole verse. Osama Bin Laden for example used a Qu'ran verse in about 2004 ( and I know this because I'm a complete history nut) reading the violence of Islam's enemies (thats not the name its what I say) it said "Attack your enemies, if the threaten you; spread Islam forth from there on" It says something like that, I don't remember that well, because I saw it on the history channel a few years back. I hope this helps and remember not all Muslims are bad. biggrin
