As a female gamer, I get a lot of crap merely for existing, and taking a liking to games as other humans had. It came to the point where I went totally silent online, refusing to ever talk outside of a party or private chat or whatever. Even now, I avoid it, for fear of having to deal with yet another guy asking me to suck something of his or if I enjoy...things. I just want everyone's honest opinion on female gamers, and how they are treated. Any suggestions as to what to do to deal with ignorant jerks?

Don't ask - don't tell.
No one at my school (besides my friends) even knows that I play video games.

Edit: I fear of being shunned so... gonk

Yeah I was the same way at first. There was just one day in my math class that I couldn't resist correcting a few of the guys on the proper plot of LoZ Ocarina of time. At first, they were skeptical, as if I wasn't able to hold my own in a Call of Duty or Halo match. When I totally destroyed them, I was accepted. There's still those guys that are just total pigs...and I honestly have yet to encounter another female gamer >.<'

I wish that would happen to me. :c

The only games I hear people talka bout is Cal of Duty or any other big games I don't have.

even then, I play games that a lot of people haven't heard of. XD

Well I think its the anonymity factor where you're not face to face that inspires people to say disgusting and crude things, particularly social deviants who only had time to exercise that as a forum troll in the past. There's always going to be a sexist jerk somewhere too. But you can just play their game right back and hurt their egos. Insult their masculinity. Mindf**k them. Go on an assault that just makes them plunge into a deep depression after they shut off their console.

I usually play a pretty diverse set of games. Playing Nazi Zombies at the moment...though I have Elder Scrolls: Oblivion, Mass effect, and res evil for gcube, and a few {unfortunately} kinect games. I try and play a vast amount of games, simply to broaden my horizons...I just still don't get why we're so shunned compared to others. I thought guys would actually enjoy having female gamers play with them...and be good at it

I agree with what your saying, I'm not trying to be rude but I find it suprising that there are girls who game considering just about all the girls I know have never even picked one up.
PostPosted: Thu Apr 21, 2011 5:29 pm

I honestly like girls that play video games. If I meet one online, I usually don't talk to her, as is the case with everyone regardless of gender, and if I do, I try to be polite. These people that you speak of, the ones that ridicule you or ask you rude things, are cowards. They hide behind the internet's power to make them anonymous. Simply mute them and continue to kick their a**. If need be, block them. In halo reach, if someone pisses me off, I'll assassinate them, an insult in itself, then pop off a f*ck you armor lock. Black ops, I'll just pop a couple extra rounds in their dead skull. If you want to degrade yourself to their level, tea bag. It's amazing how angry that can make people... but you'll just make an a** of yourself if you do it while you're loosing.

Don't worry about what guys say. I've had the same exact things said to me, and I'm a guy. So just it treat as normal trash talk. Respond however you want. Trash them back, or ignore them.

I kind of understand where you come from, despite being a guy. I've never really played online, but I have seen that sort of ridicule because of gender happen right before me in the past.
In my personal opinion, I try to remain indifferent to the gender of the player. In competative games, I do tend to fall on that sort of stereotype where I will refer to the other unknown person as "he" despite not really knowing the gender, but I like to be surprised when I find it's a girl. Especially if she plays the game well.
That said, I've met girls of many ranges of skill, just as I have met guys of a wide range of skills. I have only... two guy friends, and all the rest are girls. A few are good at the games we play together, a few are not. When I entered into a Soul Calibur IV tournament, I made it through to the finals, and my opponent there was a girl. It was indeed a very intense match and she certainly gave me a run for my money.
That is just a long-winded and elaborate way of expressing that I respect any gamer of their skill at a game, regardless of gender. I want to say that I feel it should be that way for everyone, but I can already tell that such an idea will be curb-stomped before I even get it all the way out of my mouth.

I don't think it's really nearly as rare as people think. My fiance is a gamer, and many of my female friends and co-workers are gamers, or have at least dabbled in gaming to some degree.

One of the best Battlefield Heroes players I ever met was a girl. She was a murderer on the field and I still talk to her.

IRL: I only tell my best friend about the games I play. Except for that, I don't usually talk about it. I find it annoying when another girl I know does it, so I don't want to become like her.
Online: I rarely chat with someone.
