*Joined Gaia for the games and forums FYI* *will also try not to turn this into an anti-Japanese thread*
No, I didn't read the one with Ninjas or pirates or anything that magical samurai ones. No I read the one that some of my peers in my late gender studies were raving about NANA which they claimed was pretty positive when it came to gender roles. I'm not sure if anyone is familiar with it or not as I don't want to spoil it but I have to disagree with them. I felt it was in the same breed as all those other chick flick movies/romance novels only with less stereotypes since they didn't have too many characters. (Thankfully)
Again I have an issue with sexual violence and IMPO it's a taken pretty lightly by Japanese writers (and hell even here in the States) and while I understand I can't just ignore it. So when I come to screens like that I can get easily offended double plus if the author is a female. I felt the two lead characters were pretty flat again a very common trait I see in both anime and manga series.
I dunno anime and manga either tries too hard to be all intellectual (Appleseed and Ghost in Shell movies) or it's just Disney wannabe cash cow (Pokemon). While yeah I'm sure there's a lot series people will suggest that don't fit either bill still. I am not impress and I won't be impress. It's a culture thing.
yeah no don't try with the Cowboy Bebop or Hellsing examples. Having one black dude doing a VO and a jazzy soundtrack is not enough to grab my attention. As for Hellsing hey I dislike the Catholic church as well (not the people necessarily) but the vampire deal is overdone.
In essence I'll stick to my "Western" comics and animation that a tad better with the gender bias. Just a tad.

It's really a hit or miss.
I do not mind the no black people, because it is a representation of their culture. And as far as them looking white, most Japanese are fair skinned. And in their culture men tend to be the more "dominant" force, even though women out populate them (I think...could be China). But I never really expect to see the same standards I live in cause its like 2 totally different universes
I know that I like it for the fact that it was so vivid in illustration, and so creative in storylines. I first dabbed into it when I saw my first episode of Dragon Ball Z (DBZ) when Goku got a hole in his stomach. After that I did research I fell in love.
I did read the manga Shonen Jump cause it was cheap (like 5 bucks). But my family hit a rough patch and my mother could no longer support my habit lol
I still watch anime, it interests me a lot. I guess I just do not look to identify with the culture as much as I just look at the people. How we are similar how we are different. I understand that it is all fantasy, but what is fiction had to spawn from something non-fiction whether we can see it or not.
So yea. I totally respect your decision on that. Go on and just do you.

Sir BlackHeart it's not just the fair skin Im aware that they have that. I'm talking about other facial features in general. Event then not every show, or every animation has to be an exact likeness of the culture behind it. Anime is also described as an art style. Characters who's emotions are mostly in the eyes, with small facial features, and sketchy hair. I think we look too far into it. There are just shows.

Well the Japanese themselves aren't all that cultured about different cultures and other ethic groups so that's not really a shock to me. Though I wouldn't flat out throw down the race card. It's just a different culture that has mentally (and somewhat still) shut out the outside world. Besides, it not like they have a ton of different racial groups (that aren't white or "other Asian) living there. So how could they depict any other racial group without being all stereotypical? In short: I give them a pass on that issue. What I dislike is their 1930-ish sexist ideals on BOTH women and men. Plus, all cartoons tend to lack "shading" or have issues with it. wink

I like things that inspire which is why I read (actually hard-copy) books. LOL. Everyone keeps telling me to get all these e-books and nah can't do it. I stare at the stupidity box and other screens a bit too much. I like my eyesight fine.

What japenesse person has blonde hair and blue eyes and dont give me any of the mixed race s**t neither. Alright so maybe they arent racist against black folks and that is a maybe but come on Japanese people see themselves as honkeys

Sometimes I love just to not look at a screen and look at some print

CD sound better than MP3's and poems can get jacked up in digital format since if you re-size the screen a stanza can get mess up.

Well about the convenience and quality. Alot of people always go back to the original source material. Even if it's a E book. There's always going to be something that introduces you to the original source material. Like I was into disney's fantasia before I was fully introduced to classical forms of music. It happens alot.
About the anime subject. Yeah anime is a hit and miss. I dont expect everyone to like it or understand it's appeal. I have alot of hard times getting hardcore comic book fans into this. Especially when you get into the mainstream stuff. But like comic books and video games it's one of those things that are very easily dismissed as brainless children's entertainment. And thus that's why certain companies like 4kids dumb down the source material. when it can be so much and is so much more. Especially in the right hands anime can over come the stereotypes against such as it's nothing but tentacles and magical girl rape. Miyazaki and many others proves this. But the white looking characters aren't white looking.
the reason why people think their white looking characters is because of the wide eyes and multi colored hair thing. But wide eyes are suppose to be for youthful characters or friendly characters. You'll notice that the younger the character the wider the eyes or the more friendly. The older ones get the more slanted eyes. This is an Asian feature most over looked by people who dont get the style and want to see what they think asian eyes look like. So we get characters like OMI in shaolin showdown. The different colored hair and eyes are just for playing around with colors. As in certain era's like Genki style girls do this.
Besides on the color barrier thing. Anime has been very open to allow people of color in cartoons. Even in the seventies they've had black pilots or commanders or captains and even mexican and so on. It's really a thing that is most over looked as people again stay in the mainstream safe stuff. It's actually surprising how many black or ethnic characters there are in anime alone. (check my gaia journal to see)
And about the dress style. I mean compared to what women are wearing in comic books now to fight. A miniskirt school outfit is nothing to complain about.
And anime has encouraged so many cartoons over the years from avatar the last air bender to even the boondocks style.

@ BJAC
Hmm that's some food for thought and thanks for the heads up. My niece and the youngsters are all into it. Me all I ever really cared for was Speed Racer but that's because of the horrible dubbing. My older brother and I used to look at Robotech and Transforms but by the time Pokemon and all that stuff came out I was done. I seen some of Miyazaki movies with my niece and although they are nice and pretty deep. Can't say I'm all that impress by them. Yeah got me on the attire our women in comics aren't that much better but it various. Still not as rape friendly either.

anime and mangas like all things vary from person to person I pretty sure if you look you can find one that you like. I might be hard but still. I grew up with the pokemon and outlaw star and tenchi. Idk it just kinda what i did. And the whole race and sexism thing i just chalk up to culture i mean they tried to be isolation until other countries forced them to open up what else do they know.
