I volunteer in the culinary arts department at the local community college, as the instructors aide. I've taken all the practical classes,and am currently working on the business side of things...
Anyways, when I first showed up that morning, my boss was fine. A little sleepy, but fine. But as the morning went on, he became despondent, and sank into this funk. He sat on top of a trash can, swinging his legs for most of the time between classes, watching me set things up, and listened to me answer student questions- and instructor ones!
Eventually, when it was almost time for class to start, and he hadn't moved from where he sat, I canceled the classes for the day, and asked if he wanted a doctor- he made a kinda 'mehhhhh' motion at me. So I kinda thought about it for a moment while I wrote a 'class is canceled' sign for the door, and posted it, sending a few more students away.
When I look back, he's kinda dozing off. I shake him, and talk at him.
No response.
I -almost- start panicking.
But this man is like a second father to me. He's done so much for me. He has this phrase he says whenever I'm feeling down, or whenever he's got a hot pan and he's walking behind me- "I'm behind you all the way." He's the one who fought to made sure I was paid for my work last year, let me keep my position on a volunteer basis this year when the budget got cut, is just flat out a WONDERFUL person to everyone he meets...
I run over to the phone, and call emergency services on campus- the phones only dial to other rooms on the school grounds, and if I used their connections, it'd be faster than calling flat out 911 on my own. A campus cop comes and checks him out and gets the basic info from me- that my boss is diabetic, has no local family, etc. A fire engine comes first and gets him on oxygen...then the actual paramedics check his blood sugar.
It was only 44. Any lower, and he could have gone into a coma.
So they get him back to the land of the functioning, and he tells me that he doesn't remember a thing. Not me canceling class, not talking to Chef Amber, none of it.
That man scared the living s**t out of me. But I didn't cry. Shook a little, but no panic attacks. I'm sure its gonna hit me later, but for now, I'm good.
He's fine, last I heard. Stayed on campus for a while so people could keep an eye on him, and has probably gone home by now. The reason why his blood sugar went so low was because: A- he hadn't eaten enough, and B- his new medication generally made him run a little lower than usual.
So all I really have to say is, '******** me running, I am DONE for the day.'

Like I said when you texted me about it, I am so glad Chef is okay. I know how much he means to you and who he is to you and could not even imagine how things would be if this scenario had gone any differently.
