I'm going to AX in 2011, since I had so much fun this year. And, as a bonus, I'm going to be cosplaying all four days! This thread will serve as a sort of journal for myself and others to track my progress. I'd very much appreciate helpful hints and tips from everyone, and even suggestions of what to make. Feel free to post whenever the mood strikes you.

I ordered the infamous Butterick 5781 Ice-skating pattern a few days ago from an Australian bidding site like Ebay. It was around ten dollars including shipping, and it's going in the mail today. I'm excited to see it! Should take a week or so to get here.

Hmm... what are your standards for your cosplays? (Outfit limits, hairs, eyes, kind of characters, etc.)
PostPosted: Fri Aug 06, 2010 12:20 am

I'll really only do characters that I know and don't hate. I might make an exception if the character is explained and the outfit is neat. I don't like drastic skin, like mini skirts and bras for shirts. Cost really isn't a issue. I have medium length dark brown hair and blue eyes, but I can do wigs and can /try/ to do contacts. weapons are cool, but not needed. They take longer and have to follow certain standards. I'm going to have a tough time with the Silence Glave and Aer's gun as it is.

Went to the fabric store today. I found three that I really like. One for the purple and two for the red. The first of the red would be the base for the bows, and the second is a sheer red with small gems on it. I think the sparkle will add a nice effect. I need suggestions on what to make the leotard out of, though. I need a soft material with some stretch. Cotton is too rough and not nearly stretchy enough. At least the kind from this store was. Maybe I need to look for a higher threadcount.User Image

I used to be a dance teacher, and many costumes (especially the leotard parts) that I found in catalogs were made with lycra. Lycra is quite stretchy and comfortable to move around in, but it might be a very difficult fabric to work with. I'm not sure how advanced your sewing skills are (though I'm guessing that they're pretty good), but it might be something to look into. whee

You might want to also look into just buying a white leotard from a dance/cheerleading/gymnastics/skating catalog. If you can find one that's inexpensive and fits your needs, it might be easier to buy it and then add the skirt/sleeves/collar/bow and so on, but then again this is coming from a person who can't really sew. Two companies I used to order from a lot were Art Stone and Algy, but there are tons out there to check.

@Rae:: I have a neat pattern, and I'd kind of like to use it. Plus, I can't do the Masquerade if the outfit isn't done 90% by hand. The leotard is one of the main aspects of the outfit. I know stretchy materials are hard to work with, but I think I can manage, hopefully.

For the white part of the fuku, I've decided to go with a cotton blended with one of the following: polyester, nylon, or lycra. I'm going to the store later today, so I'll look at each option before deciding. My main issue will be comfort and durability. I also re-found a neat Sailor Moon cosplay accessory site. I think I'll get my tiara from there. They make them out of brass and it all looks very professional. In other news, the third of my four cosplays has been picked! I'll be taking on the challenge of Black Butler's own Ciel Phantomhive in his pink ballgown. I'll update the first post with pictures of all my goals soon. Still looking for a fourth option.User Image

Didn't get to go look at fabrics since Nora's not feeling too well. Maybe tomorrow or Tuesday. I've spent the last few days getting ready for his mom's birthday, which is tomorrow.User Image

There is a book called JAPANESE SCHOOLGIRL INFERNO. It has the evolution of Japanese street fashion. I myself do not go as characters from series, I do cultural references

Here was my outfit layout for AX 2010:

Friday: Schoolgirl. Made skirt myself, found a white button-up shirt at H&M. I just used the torso part of the shirt, and put selves with the same fabric that I made the skirt out of.

Saturday: Gothic-lolita. Foundation black dress from tailor in China (bought two years ago) been embellishing and adding stuff to it over the past couple of years. Bought a very-full petticoat from a production costume shop.

Sunday: Black and white sexy cat. All made with clothes... not as a costume. Lots of pins and tucks.

So that is my experience with cosplay. I am not good enough to make tops, but once I have a firm foundation, I can go a lot. I hope that helps, but check out that book.

@Blue:: If I can find it, I might give it a look.

Went to two or three fabric stores today, only to find they were more furniture-making fabrics than clothes-making fabrics... BUT! I know where to go tomorrow to get what I'm looking for. Hopefully. Also going to look at housing and admissions stuff for college.User Image

If you're not too opposed to temporarily dying your hair black (guessing not because of the Sailor Saturn cosplay) and if you can manage the Terra Twist hairstyle in real life, and if you don't mind wearing purple, I think you'd make a good Sheena

(Also, despite the reference pic, the cleavage exposure isn't that bad, and can actually be lessened depending on the type of white shirt used)

Ninja. Instant no.
Don't care if it's the most amazing character in the world.
Narutards ruined all ninjas for me forever.

I can't be a vampire either, thanks to Twilight.
And I used to LOVE vampires.Srsly.

I don't understand why you couldn't just google search it, but here is a link: http://www.amazon.com/Japanese-Schoolgirl-Inferno-Subculture-Handbook/dp/0811856909

or go to your local bookstore and see if it is there. Borders and Barnes&Noble usually have it as well. If you are buying all this fabric you can afford it. Or check ebay.com and half.com. Good luck!

I went in lolita last year, so meh.
I'd more like to do characters.
Fashion alone doesn't get your picture taken.
If I'm going to put in the work to make everything,
I want to get recognized for it.

Still waiting on my pattern. *sob* Why do I have to be so far away from Australia? I used today as a recuperation day, since I haven't been sleeping much. Tomorrow it's out to do the things I was /going/ to do today! Finished a picture for a friend, but my scanner is rejecting my memory card. I'll use someone else's and show you all tomorrow.User Image

My pattern arrived today! Woo~ Disregard the fact that it stinks of Austr- I mean... mothballs. o uo; I also bought a bit of fabric for the white part of the fuku, as well as two buttons for plushy-kitten eyes. Got the art scanned, too, so I'll make a separate thread for that. Went bowling and got my butt kicked. I'll have to do better next time. Hopefully tomorrow I can get the rest of my fabric and get to work!User Image
