I was just curious to know if in Japan there is something going on with the Moon or if a famous story was related to April.
Two of the social sites I am on, Gaia included, had Moon Princess themed items for the donations.

Coincidence? I'm not sure.

Discuss. heart

lol I like that picture.
I wonder how much of it has to do with market feedback and lucky guesses.

Like... consumer trends sort of thing. :3

That does make some sense, Chloie, although I am inclined to think that there's some story behind it. I'll go look around the internet to see if I can dig anything up.

(also, I love that picture too. It's a nice interpretation of a dress that really didn't make much sense with those gold circles! lol)

Sounds like it's story time! XD Are you guys familiar with the Japanese legend of the Moon Goddess/Princess Kaguya? I thought everyone here was, but that's ok. LOL. If not or you want a refresher, here's a quick summary I found on the internet by a man named Lee Han Shih:

Quote:
Kaguya, the Japanese Moon Goddess
April 16, 2009
Special to asia!

Arguably the best-loved legend in Japan, the story of Kaguya traces its origin from a 10th century Japanese folktale called Taketori Monogatari, or “Tale of the Bamboo Cutter”.

The story tells of a poor bamboo cutter who found a thumb-sized baby girl with glowing hair inside the stalk of a bamboo. The cutter, who lived with his wife, had no children. They adopted the baby and named her Kaguya.

She grew up to become an exceptionally beautiful woman of normal size, and attracted suitors near and far, including the emperor. Kaguya was not interested in mortals, royal or otherwise. To turn them down, she set them impossible tasks. The undertaking of such tasks formed a central part of the legend.

In time Kaguya realized her origin and made preparations to return to the moon. She bid sad farewells to her adopted parents, and wrote a nice letter, attached with a bottle of elixir that granted immortality, to the emperor. After which an entourage came down from the moon and took her back in grand style.

The emperor was heartbroken. He commanded his subjects to take the elixir bottle and the letter to the top of the tallest mountain, which was the closest they could get to the moon. On it the bottle was broken and the letter burnt. Henceforth the mountain was named Fuji, the Japanese version of the Chinese words Bu Xi, or immortality. In the mind of the Japanese, Kaguya and their sacred mountain are inextricably linked.

This story is famous, and I actually heard about it in high school when we studied Joy Luck Club by Amy Tan because the Moon Goddess was mentioned there. I don't recall if it's exactly the same, though, it's been too long since I read it. Amy Tan also created the children's book, "The Moon Goddess," though because she's Chinese, it has a different spin to it.

Of course there is also a lot of different variations on certain parts. Like in another version I heard, there was a moon goddess who descended to earth to take a bath with her sisters in the spring. A man found the women bathing and took one of the beautiful set of robes hanging in the trees. Upon hearing the man the sisters fled, all except one because he had the robe. The maiden couldn't return home without her magical robe. So he hid her robe so she could never leave and forced her to be his wife. Surprisingly they lived a happy life; she learned to love him, and even bore him children. That is... until the wife found the robe. She then left everyone behind to return back to the moon to join her sisters. Any way, I believe this story is related to the spring time, hence Gaia's release date for the Princess Kaguya's MC.

There have also been animes that center around this legend. The best known is Ceres: Celestial Legend by Yuu Watase. One of the saddest, emotional, and amazing animes to come from her in my opinion. heart It's similar to the story I mentioned except with a lot more twists and crazy stuff. LOL.

Also, Inu Yasha's 2nd movie has Kaguya as the villain. Instead of a robe, there was a sash that the man stole. Super dramatic, and off the story plot, but is a fun watch with friends.

I believe that Gaia's Monthly Collectible, Princess Kaguya stems from that story. ^^;

...But we must wait for the opportunity to fly...
