So I had a strange dream involving possession the other night and thought it would be an interesting debate/discussion. I'm not sure what I believe. From what I have seen it seems to be extreme cultural tradions and practices in the ceremonies. I have not heard of any around here. It may be because they keep it hushed so others do not shun them. I don't know.
What does possession mean to you?
Is there any signifigance?
Do you really think a demon/spirit could take over your body?
Do you think you could overpower them with your mind?

A possession is an object that you own.
No, a demon cannot take over your body because demons don't exist. If, on the slim chance that they do exist, they still wouldn't be able to take over your body because it is yours and you are tied to it while the demon is not. It would be far easier for you to force the demon out than it would be for the demon to force its way in.
Yes, you could overpower a demon (once again, assuming they do indeed exist). But not with you mind so much as your will.

I think possessions are often times just mental conditions, and not as supernatural as we think they are. I personally have never seen anyone being possessed and in my faith I do not think it is possible, personally. I think people give the spirits more power than they really have to be frank about it. I do however you can be possessed if you ask a spirit into your body, but that is more so channeling, and I do not think it is much of a challenge to get the spirit out, since it is not really in, just speaking through you. Aside from that the idea seems quite ludicrous.

Random factoid: Some Alzheimer's medications can give a person without Alzheimer's disease possession-like symptoms.

I believe a demon can inherit your body if you allow sin to become an all encompassing part of your life. I don't believe a demon can just randomly enter your body. But if you allow yourself to sink into great sin, I believe they can almost control you but not to the extent that you can't break free. You always have the will to stop sin or any act at any point and time that you want.

If a demon possesses you because you sin, then you've already stopped sinning because you're no longer in control of your body.

When I was a Christian, everyone in my church believed in demons and possessions, so this entire subject used to scare the hell out of me. But now that I can look at it a little more rationally, I'm going to have to say that, no, demonic possessions aren't very likely. Most people who are "possessed" are actually just mentally ill. I'm not saying that possessions are necessarily 100% impossible, but I really, really doubt that there's any validity to the idea.

DaikonNairu -Ren- Random factoid: Some Alzheimer's medications can give a person without Alzheimer's disease possession-like symptoms. Exctally. How do we know that these people aren't taking some type of drug. We've never tested them before and most of the tribal people would not want you to. The more modern possessions I definitly believe are some how associated with drugs. But I do think there is a small chance that it could happen. I'm still iffy about it though.

I think if you have a really weak will, a demon may be able to possess you, but it is much easier for a demon to influence you than dominate your body.

To plant false thoughts in your mind, to bring you away from the truth, to work against God and bring about destruction.

Lost Journeyer To plant false thoughts in your mind, to bring you away from the truth, to work against God and bring about destruction. Why would a demon care about planting false thoughts or bringing you away from the truth? Is there a purpose, or do they do it just to be jerks? Also, why would a demon have to involve a person to work against God?
