Hello. This is a story I've been working on for a while. I decided it wasn't a bad idea to post it on here and I'd like to hear your feedback. I am currently working on it, chapter by chapter and hopefully I will not abandon this project. A lot of that depends on the feedback. If I feel like people aren't reading, sometimes I don't feel like writing. In this story, I am trying to improve my writing by add descriptive language and expanding horizons to which I am not used to. I hope to show a continual growth and make good use of my practice.

This story is sort of like Alice in Wonderland meets Atlantis. It revolves around a girl named Andrea who finds herself in a strange, aquatic world. As she learns more about the place, she must survive as mysteries are revealed and a strange race tries to learn more about her. As the story moves along, you will experience things alongside Andrea and learn about an ancient civilization, an underwater world, and the secrets that lie in its crumbling walls.

PROLOGUE

Andrea sat on the window seat, dozing off in the sun. The light danced on strands of her mahogany hair, causing the red tint to shine warmly. Opening her ocean green eyes that set off her cream skin beautifully, she smiled contently. Andrea tilted her hand, watching her favorite ring catch the sunlight in a colorful display. Red, orange, pink, and yellow spots reflected across her face in a mesmerizing way. Her ring had on it a rare crystal, handed down in her family for generations. A gentle breeze floated into the room, carrying spring's fragrance of wild flowers, rustling trees, and the sweet, pollen-filled air into the window. She listened to the breeze, a smile lighting up her face, and was suddenly interrupted by a loud splash! Immediately alert, her eyes darted to the opposite side of the room. She neared her great-grandmother’s china cabinet, her eyes wide and caution in her step. With suspense building, she slowly lowered herself to the hardwood flooring and peeked underneath. There she found a white fish, pink-scaled and flopping around in a puddle. It had long, elegant fins and golden eyes. A sharp gasp shot through her lips and her eyes beamed with disbelief. She stood carefully and gathering all of her strength, shoved the ancient cabinet to the side. Andrea quickly looked down to find that the mysterious fish had disappeared. “What?” she wondered. “It couldn’t have just vanished.” She leaned down and ran her hand over the spot where the fish had been. It was then that her ring began to glow and the floor beneath her dissolved. A yelp broke through her throat as she fell. With no time to process what was happening, Andrea hit something, hard; something wet. She swam frantically through the water, searching for a place to surface. The scream on her way down now revealed it’s price. Her mind became cloudy and before the void darkness consumed her, Andrea caught a glimpse of a school of fish, white and pink with yellow eyes and long, elegant fins.

I read it here and on DeviantArt. I really like it alot and I think you should post your drawing on here along with it. It is a good visual addition to the story. Also, I like how you described everything. And I wish I had a fish like the one's she saw. They sound so pretty. smile

Chapter One

When Andrea awoke, wet and frightened, she found herself in a strange place. The room was a dome with a sun roof and a tunnel facing directly across from her. In the center of the room ran a stream that flowed down the hall as well. Looking at the ceiling, Andrea concluded it was dawn. Eventually, the sun rose, turning the lamps from orange to pink. They were huge crystals that reflected the sunlight. Looking around the top of the dome, there seemed to be twelve. The sixth one shone magnificently so Andrea decided from this that it must be six o' clock. The walls were made from a chalky blue stone that was almost white. Resembling a mosaic, a different shade of blue graced every facet. The sunlight shone on the water. Wondering how she ended up in such a beautiful place, Andrea recalled her past when she fell out of her living room and nearly drowned. Who had saved her? Remembering her ring, Andrea looked to the one memoir of home and watched it catch the sun's rays. As if summoned by the light show, a fish swam up to her and, with a jump, plucked the ring from between her fingers. It was the white fish with pink scales again, swimming away in a flash. Gasping in disbelief, Andrea dove in after it. She swam down the tunnel with some struggle. Paying no mind to the rushing water's warning sounds, a waterfall caught her by surprise. It swept her down through odd tunnels and waterways. When she finally surfaced, Andrea swam to a platform to rest, now outside. She moaned, realizing the fish had gotten away and she was now in another new place. She stood on the stone platform, perhaps formerly a wall and stared out to the beautiful sea before her. Ancient trees twisted around each other in a living mess. Roots mostly underwater, their aged bark was blue and salty. Looking around herself, she caught sight of something below. Bent over the edge, Andrea submerged her face in the crystal clear water. Below laid a kingdom, ancient and forgotten. Although it dwelled so secretly at the bottom of the sea, it teemed with life. Schools of fish danced in and out of windows. Eels slithered through rubble. Artifacts, statues, and crystals adorned every place. Fish that resembled fossils flitted past her eyes. She then saw rather large, odd shaped fish. As she craned her neck, trying to get a better view, her sight was blocked by a thirty foot shelled fish, sunlight shining through the water on its shell. She sat up and thought. Andrea found this place unbelievable, like a fantasy. Then, she heard a splash from behind her. Turning around, she peered into the rippling water. The small fish, carrying the ring in its mouth swam down, joining a school. The fire sparked in Andrea’s eyes and she went after it again. She could only go so far without surfacing for air. When swimming back for the platform, she noticed a large fish coming at her. Adrenaline kicking in, Andrea shifted into high gear and burst out of the water. Trying to catch her breath, she gasped for air when the fish burst out of the water and joined her on the platform, leaving her stunned. The fish stood up on legs. It was somewhat human but had a long fishy tail protruding from its backbone. It sported a chest plate and helmet but had a feminine human figure. Looking like an aquatic warrior, it stood proudly, skin and scales shining a chalky blue color. Then she spoke. In an ancient language, never heard before by human ears, the strange dialect poured out from its gills. Then, it grabbed Andrea by the arm with webbed, rubbery fingers, dragging her underwater at a speed humans couldn’t achieve even with gear. Entering a huge building, they twisted through different rooms, scaring schools of fish and uprooting a few aquatic plants with the strength of the created current. Andrea, short of air, wasn’t sure if she could last much longer when they stormed through a barrier into a small, dry space. Gasping for a breath, Andrea took the time to looking around, observing the room. It was small, rather claustrophobic, and contained no openings. The door wasn’t able to be opened except by a creature like the one that took her here. Though the two of them had come in fast, there was already a puddle that rose to Andrea’s ankles, filling the room and covering the carpet. Before she had the chance to continue her observation, the creature looked around fiercely, and raised its hands. Its hands rose to its helmet, slowly removing it to reveal long locks of silver hair that fell over its face. She had huge, blazing eyes that resembled gems. When saying something else, Andrea discovered that the mysterious she-fish did have a mouth though it wasn’t visible when closed. It seemed she usually spoke through her gills though, finishing the sentence in this strange habit. Aside from her humongous mouth, she also had other striking features, such as gills running horizontally down her neck and a long, elegant tail. Andrea questioned the situation aloud, though quiet. The creature, now hearing Andrea for the first time, gazed upon the human, slightly mystified. Some unknown instrument sounded in the distance, summoning the marvelous creature away. Now free to resume the observing of her surroundings, Andrea set to it. The room was truly a masterpiece. Every splinter of wood, every drop of paint, or every leaf of flower arrangements was a work of art, carved and placed with such an unfamiliar beauty, one could marvel at it for hours. Not a lot of time passed before the majestic fish-woman returned, bringing Andrea's attention back from the room. Andrea stared up at her, asking where she was. As the girl finished her sentence she'd realized that another person entered the room with her. The second creature, taller and gleaming, proudly stepped forward and greeted her. Surprisingly enough, the salutation was spoken through his gills in the English language. Andrea was plesantly surprised, delighted that she could communicate with the unheard of species. It seemed the second was a male, sporting short black hair and a sort of knowledge on his face, as if he were a top student. He carried with him a sense of dignity, though not arrogance. He looked somewhat young, perhaps around his early twenties if he were human. Andrea could distinguish these striking features amoung the two in ther room with her as though if they were human. The resemblance was strong, and Andrea found herself wondering what would happen if other humans happened upon this unharmed civilization. His eyes scanned her, seeming to probe at her confidence and making her feel like she was the fish-human in the case. Incidentally, she was the alien species in this case and she felt that, through the prying eyes of the two creatures before her.

"Welcome to Rovina."

Andrea stared forth in awe. He continued.

"This city is a well-kept secret harboring the ancient civilization to which we belong, Rovinians."

he explained.

"We've never seen a real human before."

Andrea was afraid of that. She'd been hoping they knew what to do. Her jaw setting a tad stiffer, she introduced herself,

"My name is Andrea. I was sitting in my living room when suddenly, a strange fish appeared out of nowhere and dissapeared down a hole. It stole my ring..."

After beginning the sentence, who's words poured out more and more rushed until her last sentenced spilled out with a mystified tone, Andrea drifted into silence. Taking in the information the man questioned,

"Ring?"

"Yes. It was my great-grandmother's ring. It was pretty and shone pink, orange, yellow, and red in the light...sort of like the lamps do at different times."

"Different times..."

Andrea paused and looked up at him. They both seemed perplexed, trying to get to the bottom of something. He then turned to the female and the two conversed quickly in hushed voices. They seemed to draw to a surprising conclusion but then hushed that up as if it were something bad. Andrea shifted uncertainly.

'We would like you to meet our leader."

explained the male, who seemed to be the only English speaker at the moment.

"Come."

He motioned towards the wall that lied opposite of Andrea, where the two had entered minutes ago. The first creature, the female, repeated this command in her own language, sounding the same as when she attempted to communicate with Andrea on the stone ledge. Andrea timidly followed them to the edge of the room and stopped.

"I can't breathe in water."

she explained, sorrowfully while gesturing to her throat. The group stopped, puzzled. The female, seeming to remember something, left the room in a flash, releasing a bit more water into the room. It rose to Andrea's knees. She returned, carrying a small crystal-like gadget. She slowly approached Andrea, in an attempt not to startle her, and fastened the mechanism inside of Andrea's mouth. The male stepped forward to explain that it was his own invention, a device that converted Andrea's breath back into pure oxygen for reuse. Andrea looked intrigued and decided to give it a try. She bent over to dip her head in the water, which by now had risen to her thighs. Soaking her damp hair, she proved the gadget was a success. She then accompanied the two out the door which had opened, as if by magic after the male had swished his hand infront of it. Her head whipped around to cast a final gaze at the beautiful room, which was now filled completely with water, the furniture swimming around and most of the pieces inside the room destroyed. They were suspended in the cool water for a moment before the male explained briefly,

"We must hurry. You are not to be seen by anyone besides the leader yet."

Andrea gathered her courage and held on to one of each of their rubbery hands, being swept away in an instant.

"We've never seen a real human before."

i could so relate to that line. i'm always shocked and amazed to see anything in the supposed "real world". i gave it a four because of the detailed writing and the ability to paint other realms.

"When Andrea awoke, wet and frightened, she found herself in a strange place."

It's like a quote right out of the last week of my life. You know what it's like when you open your home to a random guest. They wake up and there's that moment of "where am i?" shock. This is turning into a serious page turner. Way to go Bloody...
