Just a light discussion:

Here's my deal.
I have real issues when it comes to spending money, it's how I was raised. Even when buying something I need/know I have to funds for/saved up for, if it's over a certain amount I get physically ill. *For example when I bought my Zune. Almost $300. Physically ill for days. Love it now, loved it then, was a worthy investment, still to this day shelling out the cash haunts me.
I'm careful to never overspend, I'm a real saver I put money away every paycheck towards... well I call it my retirement fund but I know it might not all make it that far. I live alone, I'm never late on my bills, and I'm totally self-sufficient.

By purchase I don't really mean little things you pick up randomly, everyone deserves that. I mean going all out on a brand site for an outfit you "can't live without".
I've only made that type of purchase once in my lolihood. I felt spoiled rotten and selfish. That is just how I was raised to look at things.

So these are my questions to you:
How often do you purchase?
How often would you buy if you could?
At what point is it considered/do you feel that it's spoiling yourself?
Does it ever make you feel selfish buying yourself expensive things even though you may have worked very hard to get them?
Got thoughts on my thoughts?

*I know it's all about comfort levels and what you can afford and that most would say, that as often as you can afford and feel the need.
I'm just wondering what the group consensus is on the subject.

*Please don't say to me "If you get so sick you shouldn't be into lolita because it's an expensive hobby." I know.

Disclaimer: I do not wish to offend anyone with my comments or start a big argument, and I apologise if I have. I genuinely would like input on the subject.

How often do you purchase?
Not very often, around my b-day or christmas.

How often would you buy if you could?
Um, it depends on what was going on in my life, if i had no bills, i would buy like every week.

At what point is it considered/do you feel that it's spoiling yourself?
Everytime i buy something thats say, over 50$.

Does it ever make you feel selfish buying yourself expensive things even though you may have worked very hard to get them?
No, only if people tell me its selfish.

Got thoughts on my thoughts?
I understand how you feel. I am into alot of "expensive fashions" not only lolita. I mean... Look at the cost of Raver dreads.... Like 100$ a pair. O.O i only get to look, cause i never get to buy. Yes, ideally i would buy a whole lot more then i would do now if i had a job and stuff, but that's just me. I was raised in a poor neighborhood with a poor-middle class family. When we get the money to buy ourselves something extra, its nice. But i always have to work for it and save save save!

Got ya.
I drive myself nuts. I'll save up for something and decide I don't deserve it and so then when I go back to look at it, once I say it's ok, I've worked hard enough and waited long enough, it's gone, I throw the mulla into my savings and the process starts all over again. I know that even if I were rich -which I am so far from- I wouldn't let myself buy on a regular basis.

I understand. There is alot i want to buy, but no money. Alot of the things that i want will be there for an eternity, so i can just wait to buy them. There are certain things that i have to buy myself like makeup and stuff, that i believe i shouldnt have to (still lives with parents X/ ) But i have to. i am trying to save up either for a nice pair of raver fluffies (leg warmers) or a nice loli blouse. Its a pain... D:

I think it really depends on your disposable income.
A purchase that would be inappropriate for one person might be fine for another. At the same time, if your income is something very variable (like an artist's), something that you can buy one month may not be something you can buy the next. Or maybe one month a large appliance needs fixing at you need to spend your dress money there. There really is no cut off for "more than this, and you're spoiling yourself".

Right, and that's what I understand.
Basically I'd be asking, I suppose, if you have the disposable income at what point do you look like you have a problem?

How often do you purchase?
Whenever I know I have munny to spend. I save up for little things at a time and then just. . . spend.

How often would you buy if you could?
Had I the funds, I would buy something every day D:

At what point is it considered/do you feel that it's spoiling yourself?
I honestly never do. Not that I mean it in a spoiled way. I just mean . . . er
I guess I put up with a lot, and I work for what I want. So getting something I've worked for isn't being spoiled, it's enjoying the fruits of my labour xD

Does it ever make you feel selfish buying yourself expensive things even though you may have worked very hard to get them?
Psht. Naaah. I deserve every penny.

Got thoughts on my thoughts?
I say maybe you should kinda let go a little bit :3
Maybe buy small little things at a time and eventually include something else to go with it, or just one item that cost a little more, you know?
Like sticking your toe in the pool before you jump in.
If that makes sense. Probably not. I never do. xD

xD Thanks for your suggestion. This is the kind of input I was hoping for.
I know people who spend way more money than myself, but I just feel so guilty!
Testing the pool might be a good idea, I do need to let go occasionally. Hahaha.

Heehe you're welcome!
I just think lolita is a style where it's all about spoiling yourself. Making yourself feel good, like a princess! :3

So you deserve all the things you buy, because princesses need all the good stuff O;
You shouldn't feel guilty for being a princess :c

How often do you purchase?
I usually make big purchases twice a year. Even so, I buy things used.
How often would you buy if you could?
If I had the money to do so, I might buy something every other month.
At what point is it considered/do you feel that it's spoiling yourself?
Well, I give time and money to charity and put away most of my money in the bank...But I do feel a little like I am spoiling myself when I make multiple purchases.
Does it ever make you feel selfish buying yourself expensive things even though you may have worked very hard to get them?
Maybe a little bit, but I have become a careful shopper to avoid buyer's remorse.
Got thoughts on my thoughts?
I understand how you feel. I feel the same way too, sometimes.I think very carefully before I buy something...

How often do you purchase? Depends. What I actually do is set aside up to $400 per month to spend on non-essential things. This includes going out to eat with friends, crafts supplies, music CDs, anime, manga, random books, and of course, Lolita clothing. If I've already spent enough of this "fun money" that buying something would put me over, then I don't buy it. If I still have plenty of "fun money" left then I might buy the clothing, knowing that it will cut into what else I can do later on in the month. But this way, I know for sure that I can pay all my bills and groceries, have some to put into savings, while still having enough to pay for my hobbies. If I have certain items I want to have for a particular event, then I plan ahead to either not spend all my fun money in the preceding months, or to make sure that I spread the buying far enough ahead that I'm only buying smaller amounts at a time.

How often would you buy if you could? Haha if I had infinite money? Then I'd buy everything on my wishlist XD

At what point is it considered/do you feel that it's spoiling yourself? Anytime I spend over $50 on something, I consider it extravagant XD

Does it ever make you feel selfish buying yourself expensive things even though you may have worked very hard to get them? Not really, since it's my own money now and not my parents'. I had a much harder time when the money I spent was my parents' (I didn't start buying a wardrobe until I was self-sufficient). And with my set "fun money" system, I can sort of do a give-and-take of spending money one month on myself, and spending money the next month on my friends/family. ^.^

Got thoughts on my thoughts? I was brought up in a way similar to yours (okay, maybe a bit less intense, but still) and I had to ease myself into buying things. So I started off by just buying little things at a time, like socks or jewelry or headpieces. And I made sure they were things that I could fit into my non-Loli wardrobe as well (I tend to dress really girly, so that helps). And then bought things from BODYLINE/Taobao shops that would be good staple pieces and help grow my wardrobe, without being expensive, and then worked up to buying larger brand pieces. Another way I do it is to keep a strict list of expensive items, and really think over the things that I add to the list. That way, if something on the list comes up, I know that you've truly thought it over and really do actually want the piece. And obviously, I'd go through once in awhile and make sure everything on the list is still what I currently would want to get.

@Razeasha
Got ya. We're on pretty close pages.

@Kyttyee
I like your system of having a set amount of money that is strictly yours to play with (after bills and what not). I may test drive that.
$400 Seems like alot to play around with (for me at least) but I like your way of thinking. ^^
Lordie knows I'm a list maker. Bills, groceries, books, websites, ect, ect, ect. I have many.
