I shave it. You just need to be careful to avoid irritation or ingrown hairs.
I don't know if I could handle waxing it.

Waxxx! Though yeah it will hurt like a b***h, it only stings for a little. Put on baby powder before you do so the wax sticks to the hairs and NOT your skin, limiting the pain. Just take deep breaths you can make it. ;]

All of that just sounds really ow. Buy a trimmer. It's like 10 bucks if you just get a beard/personal trimmer instead of one geared toward women's bikini areas (it's the exact same product but the latter is usually pink and for some reason that makes it more expensive XD). They get the hairs really close so they aren't bothersome, without the pain of waxing or all the upkeep and ingrown hairs of shaving. It takes no more than about 2 minutes, because you don't have to worry about lacerating your ladybits.

I wax it! O: Makes it baby smooth. <3
If you feel uncomfortable with that, you can buy wax from the store and do the front bit (where you can see). That makes the pain more tolerant, since it's you doing it. And they come in handy when you need 'em later. :3

I don't bother. Maybe trim every now and then, but not a whole lot.

I bought a kit with prewaxed strips from Target, the brand is Parissa (or something like that). You just warm 'em up in your hands, and use it. Pretty easy. Though I HIGHLY suggest going somewhere and doing it, you get way better results. These are more for like 'oh s**t my friend told me we're going to the beach I have no appointment *waxes*' situations. XD They're pretty good though!

What is having it done professionally like? It seems like it would be mighty awkward.

XD; You do sweat a bit more though due to straight skin contact, just a warning. @_@
