the S&M of BDSM is about taking/giving pain. I consider whipping, flogging, blood play, etc. physically "harmful", though not mentally if everyone is willing. And thank you for clearing up the rule/rede thing. It does make more sense as a guideline.

Sometimes, yes. And really, even that statement is an over simplification.

If "taking/giving pain" was all there was to it, you might as well be talking about playing hockey.

Ignoring that there is an inbuilt pun in the tie between D and S (speaking of puns), Sadism and Masochism are more complicated than merely "ouch!" and "Yay, I gave someone ouch".
