Thus, the form of the Anachronism shall be decided upon.
Your choices are:
Airship
The Anachronism is a gigantic airship - albeit not the equivalent of a city - sailing across the skies in search of adventure ~ all the while fending off airships and air-krakens.
The ship, largely self-sufficient though it is, finds refuge at the island base of the Aeronautical Navy. Not only is this island a haven for airships; but it a magnificent city in its own right, concealing vast underwater complexes and laboratories as well.
Flying City
The Anachronism is a platform of sorts, floating in the air assisted by propellors or balloons. 'pon this platform is built a city, largely the likes one might find anywhere else save for its odd construction.
Neither!
If you prefer the idea of the Anachronism being an ocean going city / city in a cliff face / city suspended between mountain peaks / conventional city / underwater base / etc.
Feel free to post any thoughts below...

A flying city proppeled by balloons just seems so much more...right?...steampunk?...BOTH
Whilst Airships are an escense of steampunk an airship city just doesnt sound right.

Aye. Certainly, if the Anachronism were an Airship, it would be just that. A large one, to be sure, but nothing compared with a city.

I agree, the idea of a air-born city just fits so well. Much like in Jasper Morello perhaps?

I am on the fence with this query. This is like asking..should we settle down or move into an RV and have billions and billions of adventures. biggrin Granted you could settle down and still have adventures, but that would still require a ship. If you name the city The Anachronism, in my opinion, you'll still need a ship. A very important aspect of steampunk is the atmosphere of adventure. However, every ship needs a home port. UGH! This fence haunts me so!
Am I just putting too much thought into this?

Certainly not, good miss! That was what I was thinking when I came up with this: which I think is a very fine and dandy form for the Anachronism to take. Because sure, a flying city is fun and all, but it can't go adventuring in the same way an Airship can. Plus, you've got the island which'll do a much better job of being a city than a flying city will ever do. Not to mention, a flying city is ridiculously unfeasible.

Ok, I voted. The Captain has helped ease the little decision-making part of my brain, as chaotic as it is. I also think of it this way, one hit of something mildly destructive on our flying city at the right spot, and we are all in trouble. However, if our airship is taken down, we'll still have the island to return to (granted we'll need to install escape vessels that can handle sea-fairing). Nice sketch, by the way.

If the Anachronism were to be a flying ship-city of sorts, mayhaps you should veer away from the usual Zeppelin shape. Something more exotic, cause a giant flying ship-city shouldn't look like anything out there, but that's my opinion. Mayhaps one of those, more traditional wooden hull airships with a large deck?

I still have my ideas about the kind of city in Castle in the Sky, how it has a protective shield of magically generated hurricane to protect if from oncoming objects and other airships etc. Maybe our city could have some sort of shield or force field or what not around it.

Hmm... mayhaps I have been too vague with my descriptions; 'airship' was meant to cover anything vaguely ship like ~ be in zeppelin or classic galleon ~ whereas 'air-city' covered more flat, 'simple' platforms (e.g. suspended by balloons or help up by propellors). Drat. i.e. what you're describing would be 'airship', just a very big one. ~ However, my mind is now abuzz with new airship-esque designs. Glorious.

Captain Amaranth Not to mention, a flying city is ridiculously unfeasible. You realize of course that this is the exact reason that it is winning in the polls, don't you?
