Approximately how short should I make my posts? I'm accustomed to literate RP, and my posts can get a bit long. I don't really want to make people read a six paragraph post in a light RP, but I'm not sure exactly how short is short enough.

Make them as long as you're comfortable, but keep them conversational. There's only so much description you need in those, hm? ^_^

There's no length limit on either end, though one or two-word posts are usually frowned upon, and walls of text aren't entirely cherished (unless it's coherent and readable, since we do like reading). What matters most is content and regard to the other players. As long as we're given a chance to reply and react before your story continues, we should be square.
