Does anyone have some tips for eating out at resteraunts and such? It is not really a matter of choosing healthy places, but what to eat at the unhealthy places. My dad pretty much takes us out to eat 2 or 3 times a weekend. My family has tried to get him to stop, but he really likes it and won't change.
So, I was wondering if there were things I could do when eating out, besides eating salads because that really doesn't do much for me unless you add enough stuff to make it just as bad as anything else on the menu.
For example, sometimes I will take the bread off of burgers or have something like salmon instead of heavily breaded chicken.

I think you're pretty much always safe with GRILLED chicken. Stay away from mayo. Get vinegar-based salad dressings instead of, um... the other ones. xd I forget the exact terminology, but pretty much just get the clear-looking dressings (vinaigrette, sesame & ginger, etc) instead of the opaque ones (thousand island, ranch, etc). But yeah, when I eat out I pretty much always get grilled chicken 'cause it's super delicious and not terrible for you, and there are plenty of ways for it to be served (rosemary, teriyaki, in a sandwich, etc) so it doesn't get boring. Also et a baked potato instead or a side of vegetables instead of french fries (but be careful not to put too much butter or cheese on baked potatoes).

I'll keep you my dirty little secret... This is probably common sense that I don't need to tell you, but eat lots of veggies on your sandwich/burger/whatever if you're given the option of choosing what goes on it.
Also, patting the excess oil off of fries, burger patties, pizza slices and other oily food helps to make it a little healthier for you.
...don't tell anyone or you'll be just another regret.

it can be useful to look up the menu online and see what the calorie/fat content of each thing is so you can make a more informed choice

I always give myself a choice of things so I don't feel like I'm punishing myself. Like I can have an appetizer OR a dessert OR an alcoholic beverage, but I can't have all three. I also usually only eat half of what's on my plate, because restaurant portions are huge, and I take the other half home for the next day's lunch.

Avoid the cheese! Restaurants put cheese on things so liberally its crazy.
The most important thing is picking your restaurant wisely, at a restaurant that's going to serve all healthy options, you can barely go wrong.

yes, the cheese is like a death sentence to my diet, especially since its so yummy xp try to avoid things that have creamy sauces too, and dont be afraid to ask whats in a dish, can you have dressings on the side etc.

Also look Holistically at your diet, if you eat out often and are not eating a lot of meat/oil/fats/other things, one meal really can't be that bad.
A good tip is to eat half and then have it boxed and wait thirty minutes, and if you're still hungry eat away.
