I'm Ravenclaw as heck, but I love Gryffindor and Slytherin equally. They each have their strengths, after all.
Bravery, Intellect, Cunning, Loyalty. The house traits. None is better than any other. (/^o^)/

Gryffindor - the house of the brave. Prime example is Neville Longbottom, who showed massive courage in standing up not only to his enemies, but also (as seen in Sorcerer's Stone) his friends.

Ravenclaw - the house of the clever. Prime example is Luna Lovegood, who thought of riding the winged horses when nobody else (even Hermione) could figure out a way to leave Hogwarts.

Hufflepuff - the house of the loyal. Prime example is Cedric Diggory, who in the end of Goblet of Fire, just when he had reached the end and could have claimed victory for himself, refused it, wishing instead to share it with the person to whom he felt he owed his victory.

Slytherin - the house of the ambitious. Prime example is Draco Malfoy, who utilized all resources available to him and would stop at nothing to achieve his dreams.

That being said, I am neither Gryffindor nor Slytherin...I most closely align with either Hufflepuff or Ravenclaw, but I am usually told that, because of where my priorities lie, I would be in Hufflepuff. I am intelligent, but my primary motivation would be loyalty. If I could learn every secret to the universe and lose a close friend's companionship, or keep my friendship and lose the opportunity to learn, I would choose my friend any day.

To answer the question, though, Gryffindor or Slytherin...I think everyone carries some traits of each of the four houses. Hermione Granger, for example, is extremely clever (Ravenclaw) and a good and loyal friend (Hufflepuff) as well as, in many ways, determined to disprove those who found the fact that she was muggleborn to be a disadvantage (ambition, a trait of Slytherin). But the attribute that most shaped her destiny was her bravery, which was why she was chosen for Gryffindor. What I think is, the house you go to carries the attribute that will one day define your future.

This is why I know that I am a Hufflepuff. I have attributes of the other houses, but in the end I am loyal to those I love above all else. My bravery, cleverness and ambition all feed back into my love and my loyalty.

If I had to choose Gryffindor or Slytherin though...Gryffindor. For my priorities, having stronger Gryffindor traits than Slytherin is important.
