Um, first off hi everyone. Ok, so now that the formalities are done, I have a very serious question to ask yall. You see at this moment I am quite content with my style of work, however I seem to have a really big problem with backgrounds. I mean, I can do abstract back grounds just fine~~~ MIkki Lady razz my fan art.( Note: I know this is a copy pic, but its not for the forground, I'm talking about background stuff) As you can see there is really nothing there, just a relativly decent abstract background, no area, no place like a stage or anything... just little pink dots. Ugh! If only i had some kinda idea about what to do in them. I mean some times i do but not often, its all sperr of the moment. As like in this example ~~ [My personal Character NO USE HIM!!] I mean i can make them but i need practice. So now we come with the main meaning of my asking, I would like to do some avi art for those willling, however not just avi art. If you are interested, i would also like you to state/discribe the background of the pic you want. Please helps me. I'll post the non colored pics for views or i can send links to ya if ya want. ty ty ty ty ty ^^

Personally, I don't think complex/detailed backgrounds are all that necessary with avatar art. Abstract backgrounds work great, because the focus should be the art of the person's avatar.
But, if I were to request avatar art, I'd probably want something that fits with my avatar. Since my avatar is steampunk-inspired, my avatar should be placed in a steampunk-like world or in a clock tower or something.

I don't use Photoshop at all, but the background in your picture looks like a whole bunch of Photoshop effects... I personally sorta look at Photoshop effects as "cheating"... I tried their grass brush tool before; amazing, realistic looking grass in 10 seconds, much unlike the effort required to actually draw grass. Anyhow, Photoshop effects like that don't match drawn art. I'd avoid using them as much as possible and try to rely on/hone your own background drawing skills. My art teacher in high school used to say something like "the background is just as important as the main picture", and I quite agree with that. Pictures look so much more complete with a good background. I mean, you don't want to draw attention away from the main picture; you can avoid that from happening by putting a thicker outline around your character, using thin lines in the background, perhaps blurring the really distant background things...

I would agree, except in the case of conceptual character art. There isn't a need for it, if your main intent is to just draw the character. However, if you want to draw convincing backgrounds, you have to treat the background on the same level as the character, treating the whole drawing as a whole. That is quite true.
