In that case I think I will only remove those options that tie for the lowest vote count and add the first x colors suggested in the preceding month, where x is the number of colors to be replaced.

I think it looks better than without. Also the color differentiation is hard enough with thick letters.

On second thought the obvious approach is to set the color for a whole month based on the previous month's poll.

My laptop is so choice, I cannot tell there is any color difference on the first post.
What about going with Hann's color theme of the purple/blue?
MAYBE INSTEAD OF BLUE, SOME TEAL?
LIKE THE FOURTH ONE FROM THE TOP OF MY COLORS (THE THIRD BLUE) AND THE TOP PURPLE.
