Should homework be banned? Why am I saying this? Of course, homework affects students grades, thus, the chances of getting good jobs. But homework has to be done at HOME (duh). That's the thing, school already takes around 7 hours of our day, why should it take more of our social and personal life? What happened to "America's freedom"? appearently(sp), most American schools ******** up students with three projects every two weeks and every day more than 4 classes give homework. Imagine how those students are doing. They have no life if they get good grades, they have to be locked inside their home doing the school work. Also, why should people pay private schools if it's illegal not to send a child to work? And public schools aren't reliable most of the times (violence, irresponsable(sp) teachers etc...). I know homework is made to enhance the student's knowledge but the 40 minutes (or 80 minutes in my case) in class are enough! And most teachers don't give a ******** about how much work they're giving. One teacher said "I don't care if these projects give you stress or anything, YOU DO THEM". Stress is bad, very bad, eventually stress leads to depression, depression if not treatable=suicide or killing someone else. Let me sum it all up Classes have their own time in school, so why should they give us homework? Is it because the teacher isn't doing her job and needs us to do it for her or him? (teacher just lays around and says "okay, page ## exercise # and make # paragraphs for tomorrow explaining what science is) god this thread came out horrible...let's see how I can improve it....

I hardly ever do homework at home. I do it in my other classes <.<
I don't like required homework. It's one thing to be like "If you want to practice some of the stuff we learned today, try numbers 10-15 on this page..." but all that is is busy work for the smart kids who don't really need the practice. I like it when teachers just give suggested homework.
Oh, and I like this sentence: Is it because the teacher isn't doing her job and needs us to do it for her or him?
That poor gender confused teacher XD

Homework is what helps me pass class after all mrgreen Allow me to give a small broken up explanation.
- You learn the lesson from school.
- The teacher gives you homework
- You do the homework on the lesson as a review, thus proving you can do it on your own. If you have problems, you ask the teacher for assistance next class period.
- Quiz and Test questions are highly similar to that of homework questions, thus proving Homework = the base of passing/failing a class. You do it, you know the info., apply it and you'll pass the class overall.
But if you're in my Math Analysis class, the homework given is to learn the lesson next class as advanced reading, go out for the problems and then ask questions the next class and THEN learn what the lesson is about and how much you screwed up the homework gonk But you get something out of it at least wink

Well, up until about 3 years ago I would have said no because I wasn't being burried in it. Now, on top of about...8 or 9 hours of school I have at least another 6 hours of homework. I do get very good grades but you do have a point in saying that I have almost no life while doing so. crying I only have about 2 hours a day to do anything I want to do then I have to go to bed or I'll be exhausted in the morning.
Speaking of that homework...I better start it now.

hw is only meant to practice what you've learned, some teachers don't do their jobs right is becuase they follow the district too much *our school district is friggin stupid >,<* hw is useless in some classes, and good in others. what would be the whole piont in doing hw for p.e? but math you do need hw so you can remember the formulas and stuff a lot better. really depends on the class. but stress is sometimes good, but too much is bad.

I contest that Homework is essential.
Because the teaching system doesn't work. Too much time is spent in class on theory, and not enough on practical.

Speaking of homework, I better do my Math Analysis homework right now before I get a 3rd 0 (1st time was I forgot due to life, 2nd time I actually did it but it had to be physically manifested by having my notebood with me, so more responsibility on where I do my homework and make sure I bring it). Tedious process, but idk how much school would change if homework was bonus points. My Chemistry class has a similar system. If you have a B+ or higher, you don't get to do homework and for every assignment you do even though not required, +1 point for your Daily grade in case you fail a test by not being serious about the class.

Homework should be optional. It's not something you need to force on all students. In fact, it can bring down those who know the material, as they're likely to not do it as it's repetitive. And it's likely to grant good grades to those of lesser intelligence, who..... Usually just have to half a** it and turn it in for full credit. But, at the same time, it does aid those who aren't as smart, yet still try. It gets them to think on the subject, and they get better at it. Useless for one such as myself, who can sleep through an entire subject and ace every test in a half conscious state, but..... For those slightly above average down, it does help them.
So, it should be optional, and not for a grade.
That, or we go to a better school system. I've thought of one that's undoubtedly many hundred times better then the current one(in all ways), but it might not be perfect...... And would need testing.

Enlighten us on what kind school system you're going to implement? More interaction between teachers and students on lesson plans instead of being stuck in a 60 degrees class for 1.5 hours with the podium dividing you the the class as an example? (yes my English class room is that cold in the end of the day)

(yes my English class room is that cold in the end of the day) Cut subjects into much smaller sections. I believe in most courses, this is already done. Treat those sections as full classes. No passing Algebra, but instead passing basic algebra, functions, ect. And make sure that a student has it down 100% before passing them. Using this, cut down the English and Social Studies systems down to proper length. No need to go over every aspect of American history five times. Just once. Same thing with English. First time over must be absolutely efficient, so that there's no need to go over it again. Better prerequisite system. Instead of saying you need all of class Xeno(ABCDEFGHI) is needed to take class Polaron(Which only requires C and F), all you have to do is take subjects C and F. Eliminate the entire year round system. Summer break..... No longer needed, children don't need to help tend the fields. But they also don't need to be in school for these seemingly random periods of time every week day. Allow them to come in whenever it suits them, and study how it suits them. People would still have to come if they wanted to do anything with their lives, but they'd be able to do it on their own time. And a whole bunch of other stuff. Much of which would cripple the useless Social Studies and English systems, replacing them with much shorter and probably more effective systems. And rid of the entire college thing as well. Everybody says you need to go to college. But ne'er to learn. Just so that you can get a job. It doesn't seem to serve a real point.

Nope.
My teacher would have us write sentences for our vocab words. After a few weeks, if we did all the assisgnments she said we didn't have to do the sentences anymore. The people who stopped doing them would start failing vocab quizzes. Now those who don't have to do it on their own or cram before the test.
Homework works unless you have absolutely no clue what you're doing.
