I think it'd be a good idea to categorize people into what they use to compose on the computer. I know not everybody has one of these, but if you don't you definitely should get Tux Guitar. It's like Guitar Pro, but free!

I use Guitar Pro, and the reason I want to know this stuff is because i'd like for all of us to be able to share tabs and our own music that we've written over here for critique and stuff. And I mean like serious critique. No "that was good man!" but real critiquing.

If you have any questions about these, or any just in general don't be afraid to ask! Go ahead :] If you use other composing software, don't be afraid to say so! I'll put it down with your name underneath it just as well.

Why don't you compose?

'cause i only play covers 'cause i don't really know scales or whatever.
basic chords here and there but i don't know how to connect them so that they sound good - only when i'm playing a cover.
ex: C Am G F

got any tips?

Go here. This will solve all of your theory problems.

But basically practice songwriting. Be patient with it; no one started off amazing. Even Bach once said "Anyone can do what I do, it just takes practice". Play guitar, and don't sit down and go "I'm going to write a song today!" Try and let it flow.

But, most importantly, practice.

I use an archaic format for composing, where we inscribe symbols and insignia on the pureed and processed carcasses of perennial woody plants with a mixture of dyes and water. You may know it as 'paper and pen'.

I'll stop being sarcastic now. Honest.

I do, in all fairness, write alot these days. I used to just memorise it but since I went pro I write down more. I also use Sibelius for composing and have guitar pro ragged through crossover. I did have Powertab too but it doesn't like crossover as much as Guitar pro.

EDIT: OH, I use protools alot as well. A little tricky at first but the variety of instruments with the VST's is worth the hassle.

Amen to this. This is my newest (and favorite!) compositional software. I'm trying to write for full symphony, so that works a lot better than GP or PT.

Have you written anything in them that you'd like to share?

I have several projects n the winds, but nothing I'm happy with just yet. My main problem is that I'm a self employed composer / Music University student, so alot of my writing goes to writing for those. With both of them, it's about hitting targets, not writing my music. But I do make sure I jam for myself atleast an hour a day, as jamming is a vital part of any musicians practice regime.

I've got some acoustic stuff written, and I hope to test run it soon ish. I've also got a concept album underway, but that's an epic project that will take a long time... Steely Dan long (that's right, I avoided the p***s joke).

In short, music will be distributed when it's distributed. Thankyou

I use Tux guitar, not for composing though. I used to write a lot of songs, but I have neither the time nor anyone to play with anymore. I just practice and jam, I'm more at the improvement stage at the moment, since I'm no where near the skill level I want to be at.

Tux Guitar ish free. Thus I use it XD. It runs Guitar Pro stuff, so I don't see why people have to buy Guitar Pro.
