I know this has been done to death but its a topic of much debate between me and wife. Should we have kids we debate on raising them towards pirate or ninja, I could use support on the ninja side but my wife is steadfast on the pirate angle. This is not about Naruto styled ninja's but rather the true original assassins. I'd say pirates isn't Captain Jack Sparrow but he fits the "pirate mold" decently enough. I wouldn't mind debate as well. Most facts I have on the subject are courtesy of "Deadliest Warrior" (A show which doesn't account for combat style or setting but is still awesome)

Because there is no question to it; Pirates are so much cooler.

The whole culture is so much more adventurous and exciting. They are seafaring and have to fend for themselves in the open ocean with their ship. There are swords, cutlasses! Astrolabes, Telescopes! CANNONS! The ingenious nature of the eyepatch, which is believed to be inplace not to cover a wound but to keep one eye adjusted to darkness at all times in case of siege.. The Hook hands and Peg Legs! Parrots! Yo ho ho, a Pirates Life for me...

I wonder how effective all the above mentioned items were with a ruined depth perception. I don't think a siege would include suddenly blocking out the sun like and darkness were pretty hard to change to those extremes in that era. Ninja's virtually invented psychological and biological warfare. They would spread rumors of "evil powerful ninja" to demoralize the samurai and further their "evil" image with assassinations. On the biological front they invented the "black egg," a forefront in fighting dirty.

On the biological front they invented the "black egg," a forefront in fighting dirty. I meant sieging a retreat into the bilge. Keep up! And 'heroes?' Puh-lease! Ninjas were total whores for money, killing whoever had the biggest bounty on their head. At least Pirates acknowledge that they are in it for the gold. And poor depth perception is better than not being able to breathe.

I think I shall admit defeat barring surprise reinforcements (help?) as I seem to be standing alone.
Oh and historically ninja's didn't kill for money, they were the townspeople fighting against the samurai and pretending to be someone they invented.

You completely missed what I was saying. I meant that some words have multiple plural forms. An example is how the plural of sock is both socks and sox. Ninja is pluralized either by remaining as ninja or by adding an "s" to the end.

What are you, a stereotypical Ugly American?
