I wanted to know what you thought about the books that have been made into movies.

Specifically which movies portrayed their book the best or which movies you were upset with because they changed it.

One book that I read recently was My Sisters Keeper. I saw the movie first and then I read the book I was upset that the movie ending is different then the book. The movie ending was decent but I preferred the book ending.

I was extremely upset with Eragon. Absolute worst movie I have ever seen. Not only that, but they also left out vital parts which kills any chance of there being a sequel. mad

The only time I've ever preferred the movie over the book was with Howl's Moving Castle. Hated the book, but fell completely in love with the movie. All the changes they made where good. They improved the story, in my opinion.

I read The Time Traveler's Wife earlier this year and saw the movie last month. There were a lot of parts missing. If I hadn't read the book, I probably wouldn't have had a very good grasp on the movie. That's why I've given up on the Harry Potter movies, too. Some books just aren't meant to be smooshed into a two hour movie. neutral

I was also upset with Eragon and the Harry Potter movies. I think the Harry Potter movies are among the worst. Although one of my friends said that the new one wasn't that bad. I still haven't seen it.

On the subject of having to read the book to understand the movie, one my friends read twilight and then saw the movie. She noticed that in the movie one of the questions that Bella asks is completely out of left field unless you have read the book.

I always think it's strange when people go on fan-rages about how their favorite book being made into a movie that didn't describe it accurately enough or do the original justice

Personally that sort of thing never really bothered me.
(..Wait, that's not true; there was one that made me pretty mad, the Inkheart movie was really quite bad) sweatdrop

Anyways, usually I've actually found out about a few really good books that otherwise escaped my notice because they were made into movies 3nodding

Usually I think the rule of 'THe book is better then the movie" holds pretty true, the only real exception I've found was Stardust.

I was EXTREMELY upset with Eragon. They had everything jumbled up, and Arya didn't look anything like they described her in the book!!

I was also upset with twilight. They REALLY messed up that movie.

Really? The Time Travelers Wife isn't any good? i wanted to see it.. oh, well!

I've never been the type of person to get angry because the film adaptation is different because that's what it is- an adaptation. Sure there are books that don't translate well to screen (fantasy novels especially since they rely on the reader's imagination). If I like the book, I give the movie a chance. Is it going to be as good or better? Probably not.

I also get irked by people who are fandom-loyal to the point where they'll get defensive if anyone has any criticism of a book-gone-film. I was told I obviously wasn't REALLY a fan of (insert fandom) because I had comments about the film that weren't "Oh wow! THAT'S WAS THE BEST THING EVER!"

The Tale of Despereaux.

That is one of my favorite books, and when I saw the movie in my own living room, I could not keep quiet. My parents eventually had to make me promise not to say anything else about the differences until it was over.

I mean, the movie as the movie is cute. Adorable, really. But when you look at what it came from, the deep meaning and imagery is just lost.

I hated the Eragon movie. Aria looked nothing like Aria and they left out or changed key events that forshadow future events.

I really enjoy A&E's mini series of Pride and Prejudice. I've watched it about a million times. I've read the book and it's as close as you are going to get. I saw the movie they made recently and it sucked. There were superflous scenes and shots that they really didn't need- like the pig balls(* text in white rated R.) I never needed to see those and it had nothing to do with the story.

The movie the Last Unicorn is line for line like the book. The only real part that was cut out that would have been clarifying if it had been left in was the origin of Prince Lir. It's the best adaptation of a book to a movie I've ever seen.

Yeah, I agree. I watched Eragon at home and I was always commenting while it was playing like, that wasn't supposed to happen! or, I don't remember that part! or, i'm am going to DESTROY who ever made this into a movie.
I prefer the book because it gives you the full story and usually (83.97% chance) better than the movie.

Totally. I read that book when I was in second grade. 7 years old. 200% later, I still like it.

The book is almost always better than the movie. There are of course a few exceptions like Fight Club and Stardust.

One of the best film adaptations, in my humble opinion, is that of the Bret Easton Ellis novel American Psycho starring Christian Bale. I loved the dark humor, and the part of Patrick Bateman was played as close to perfection as you could imagine. Comparing it to the novel, I can't think of anything that could have made the movie any better. They selected the best parts of the novel to film, and even paid homage to previous novels by Ellis.

The only film I can recall seeing that actually carried across the spirit of the book on which it was based is Everything Is Illuminated. That film is probably my all-time favorite, and it actually rivals the book in my opinion. They had to cut out a lot (of course), but what they left still gave you the general sense of how the book felt and what it was really about. It starts out hysterically funny and ends touching and poignant.
I recommend both the book and the film to all of you! ; D
