So would you say that Gothic Victorian fits both Goth and Steampunk or just one? Here's some examples of victorian goth that seems pretty Steampunk to me: Dress 1Dress 2Bustle Skirts

I think Victorian goth fits it into either one of them but it's not all inclusive. Like, there's different types of goths besides gothic victorian and there's other ways to go steampunk than straight on victorian. Those dresses do fit, but you can take the styles further than, say, slapping on a bustle dress. But if you were to ask, is victorian goth steampunk? then I'd have to say no just because even though you've got the era clothing, your missing the anachronistic and technilogical aspects of steampunk, and steampunk can apply to other eras.
Other people are free to disagree, but I think the emphasis on the technology, punk-factor, or anachronism is what separates steampunk from somebody in historic clothing.

Ah, Retroscope, how I wish I could afford you!
Anyway, I think that Victorian Goth and Steampunk blend together quite well. Of course, not all Victorian Goth is Steampunk, and not all Steampunk is Victorian Goth, but it is possible to mix the two and get something that falls into both categories.

I'd like to think they work rather well together! You can be wearing a steampunk ensemble which is rather Gothic or vice versa. In respect to clothing I don't see how they would need to be dissimilar, a steampunk costume doesn't necessarily need to incorporate typically steampunk aspects. It's mostly the technology which is added on afterwards. Of course you can add and change either to get one which is only suitable for one style but they do often work well for either, I'd say. biggrin

I agree completely with everything that has been said.
Goth and Steampunk are different things, but can be mixed together quite well. Likewise, Goth & Victorian can go together and leave Steampunk out completely.

I'd say it's all how you wear those pieces. By accessories and props and make-up you could easily go either way.

I love the second dress. With the right stuff, the second dress and the bustle skirts could be Steampunk. But the first dress would be a little hard.

Victorian Goth doesn't exist. Goth fashion occasionally takes a slight nod from victorian fashion, but if you dress in victorian style it's just victorian style. Further, the two wouldn't be interchangable anyways because steampunk is about victorian era TECHNOLOGY in an alternate timeline.

It's all in the accessories. Much of my wardrobe is Victorian goth, but could easily turn steampunk with the proper use of props and accessories.

Can't say I'm familiar with victorian goth
but I suppose it could fit both, as steampunk often has victorian elements. (and i would assume it fits with goth... as it has it in the name?? haha)

They can be one and the same, but don't necessarily have to be depending upon the outfit.

The dresses are gorgeous, but they are gothic victorian, not nescessarily steampunk. SP depends on accessories really. razz

Mechanical Death SP depends on accessories really. razz Yeah, I have to agree with that. I think it can be the 'classy' type of a steampunk costume. Beautiful, detailled dresses that you can mix up with very steamy accessories. But like everyone else I think Victorian Goth is not necessaraly (pardon the spelling ^^;; ) Steampunk. I think you can make an outfit be Steampunk with a lot of different bases. And that's what so cool about the genre, right? ^^
