People assume things way to often. For example: whenever I tell someone I live in Utah the first question out of there mouth is normally "are you mormon" I answer no and they ask "so then you like to ski/snowboard" they're assuming that since I live in Utah I'm either a mormon or I like to ski/snowboard... What about the mountains? I know a lot of people that live here for the sole reason that there're lots of mountains and they love mountains.

Another example: At my school they require you take a placement test to place in classes so I took it and since I'm bad at taking tests I placed in a reading comprehension class, that was fine what was annoying is my teacher assumed that because we were taking a reading comprehension class that meant that we never read unless we had to... this was true for some of the people in in my class but others read often and would get annoyed with my teachers assumption. This teacher also assumed that since I was homeschooled I was stupid... which isn't true.

In my experience these assumptions often lead to misunderstandings and disagreements. Since if you assume it then chances are you don't ask or you might ask one thing and from there answer assume another thing, and not ask about the second assumption.

Discuss: Are assumptions an issue?

Depending on the situation, yes an assumption can be an issue. Most of the time though they are just a minor annoyance.

`•.¸¸.••´´¯``•• .¸¸.Just be who you ωαηηα be...

I hate it when people just assume things about you. =/
Like, when I was still in school, I was into the goth kind of look.
Now, I didn't wear chains with my makeup streaking down my face..
I just wore mostly dark clothes, which I still do and some heavy black make up, which I still do..
Every kid that I met in the middle schools and high schools I went to automatically assumed that because I am into the goth stuff and love rock music..
That I was a witch and a devil worshiper and loved death and wanted to kill people.
I had to explain myself to this one boy over a million times that I just like the looks and there is nothing wrong with liking rock music.
Naturally, the boy was too stupid to listen to a thing I said because he had his head too far up his own a**, but still. =/
I mean, I didn't have a huge problem with people coming up to me and asking me questions...
But I had a problem with him automatically assuming s**t about me and then not even listening when I explained things.

Val says: There's nothing wrong with assumption in and of themselves. They're just the natural start to understanding the world -- categorising. It's when people allow the assumptions to blind them that an issue occurs.

For example... when I meet a new Christian, I assume that certain topics are touchy ones... but at the same time, I know that there are Christians out there that can be reasonable about those topics. You see? It's a survival mechanism of sorts

Also... ******** I hate writing with a tablet using the on screen keyboard mad

I love assumptions. Both when I make them, and when they're made about me.
When I make them, which I often do, I usually end up over or underestimating things. And when you do that, things are bound to turn interesting.
When they're made about me......
The countless times in all my classes where people ask my grade, I respond with what it is, and they're shocked how high it is.
As I sleep through all my classes.
And people somehow assume that makes me stupid.
And then I get higher grades on tests then them.

I also assume that every human is human, and wants to be treated as such. And no matter how many people I meet that prove me wrong, that's an assumption I'll always make.

The only bad thing with assumptions is when people refuse to believe they're wrong. confused

I hate that word. Whenever I use it my dad says "assuming is making an a** out of u and me"

They can be an issue, if you're saying your assumptions out loud in front of a person who could be offended by it. If you keep your thoughts to yourself, it shouldn't pose as much of a problem

I believe that assumptions have their bad points- but that they are also an integral part of understanding people. All of the things that we know are based off of assumptions in some form or another- assuming that people are telling us the truth, assuming that our observations of the physical world are accurate... Nothing that we know is without assuming something.

It can be used for both good and ill- if one uses inductive reasoning to take the fact that one given religious person is a jerk and comes to the conclusion that all religious people are jerks, that's perhaps not such a valid assumption, and perhaps one that would often be considered a bit close-minded and judgmental. However, if you were to take that same observation and assume that it's better that you keep your distance from that person in the future because you aren't likely to get along, isn't it likely a good thing that you made that assumption?

All of the math that we know today is based off of assumptions- that adding things together creates a whole rather than two parts, and that taking something away creates two parts rather than a whole which has been arbitrarily divided. Though we can observe these things (if you take three individual water molecules, and put them into one container, you have three molecules in the container), they're still based off of the assumption that our observations are correct.

So as a whole, I see no problem with assumptions. I use them every day, you use them every day, we all do to some extent. It's simply the misapplication of them that becomes a problem.

For example, I often make the assumption that all people who major in physics or one of its derivative fields (astrophysics, etc) are atheists. Is this assumption correct? Likely not, though I've personally never met one who was religious. Fields dealing with the nature of the universe itself while demanding hard evidence don't tend to draw people whose beliefs are often directly contradicted by the generally accepted, and somewhat proven, theories. Could my assumption be a problem at some point in time? Yes, it probably could, since I don't tend to speak kindly of religion when among those that I am certain share my belief that there is no higher power, or at least have no particular belief either way.

In short, assumptions are a simple fact of life. They're going to exist. One should either learn to disregard those who make groundless assumptions, or to accept that some people are going to be like that and ignore the assumptions themselves, though not necessarily write off the person. I strongly recommend the latter, though that's just me.

I hate assumptions!

Maybe I was amused the first time I was buried under a pile of paperwork and some guest said, 'Oh, it must be nice not to have to do anything' just because he didn't see any other people around and assumed that people are all I have to deal with. Considering that I've heard that kind of stuff a million times at this point, I have a very, very hard time keeping a straight face and smiling instead of belittling the person in some way when I hear it now. I swear, one of these days I'm going to come out with something like, 'I guess your job is pretty awful since you have to roll in drunk around 3 AM multiple nights in a row just to cope with your miserable existence. But hey, at least they pay you enough that you can afford to drink, right?'

@ Rayne - I had the exact same problem in high school. I had a girl in my stats class in 12th grade tell me at the end of the year, 'You know, I used to be afraid of you because I thought you were a witch and were going to cast a spell on me, but you're actually a really nice person.'
