[I suppose this topic was explored a bit in the "What do you prefer 'African American or Black'?" thread, but I figured we could elaborate on this end of it.

Most members agreed that when given the choice between African American and Black, no matter what their choice, most would prefer not to be called "The N-word."

Yet we seem to have some self-proclaimed "ghetto" and "gansta" kids among us. And not to mention all the rap-lovers. So I ask you especially, supporters of the 'hood and Hip Hop: what do you think about the n-word?

--Is there really a difference between "******" and "*****"?

--Does it depend on who uses the word in what context toward whom?

--What if rappers stop using the word? Do you think the general population would stop using it too?

--Have you personally ever used the n-word either as an endearing term or as a derogatory slur with an intent to insult someone?]

I don't like the word and it used to get on my nerves when i heard people say it, but i learned I can't stop it so my only rule is you don't call me a *****, no matter if your black, white or cambodian. but I get the whole trying to take the power of the word away and give it a positive conotation.

[...Okay...but if you still get offended by it depending on whose mouth it comes from, then that's a lost cause. evil ]

[Also, I don't mean to sound like a search engine, but I've been wanting to ask for a long time now--Is your screen name supposed to be "thirdeyephilosophy?"

I'm not a big supporter of it.
I dont think there is a diffrence between either.
People probably made up the word "*****" so they wouldnt have to say "******" and are therefore not really saying it, in their mind of course. ((If that somehow makes sense.))
To me there is no diffrence.

i think black people that use it are just plain ignorant about the history of the word.

hmmm i've said this once before i think. I think how you use the word is affected by where you were raised.....your enviroment.

like a black person raised in the suburbs where ***** isnt said alot, probably wont use it alot.

verses someone from the inner city or a prodominately black area probably will use it and be comfortable with it because it's a part of thier everyday language.

it's really hard to stop saying something you have been saying since you were a child.

[Actually, I beg to differ. I lived in the "projects" for 21 years. I've been against that word since elementary school. I never felt comfortable saying it, so I didn't and no matter whose mouth it came from, I never liked being called any variation of the word, even though a lot of people in the projects and in school seemed to have no problem with it. neutral Environment is a factor, but it's really not the whole equation.]

Even though your statement has some validity, it's a broad generalization. There ARE educated people who use the word. But with the english language, we modify words to how we see fit... so! They may not be thinking about history the moment they say, "That's my niggaaaa" Or something to that effect...

It was suppose to be thirdeyephilosophy but it wouldn't fit in the username thingy, and I'm offeneded no matter who says it just more so when there not black.

[Though I did say I agree, I wish educated people wouldn't use the word. What sort of example does that set? If anyone says it, the word is kept alive, whether it's seen as good or bad depending on the situation. rolleyes ]

i kow it was a broad statement, its just that if you know what it mean then why would you use it, i don't understand that. i just wish the word would die, which it won't
