Astronauts on the International Space Station have watched the new Star Trek movie while 220 miles above Earth.

The movie was beamed over to the ISS where the crew set up a laptop in the Unity module to watch the J.J. Abrams space movie.

NASA astronaut Michael Barratt said he had been a Star Trek fan since watching the original series, "Like many of my NASA coworkers, I was inspired by the idea of people from all nations coming together to explore space," he said.

He added that he had been disappointed by the lack of Vulcans at NASA training centres.

"Star Trek blended adventure, discovery, intelligence and story telling that assumes a positive future for humanity," Barratt added.

"The International Space Station is a real step in that direction, with many nations sharing in an adventure the world can be proud of."

The ISS crew have access to a collection of DVDs and hold movie nights as a regular activity.
