Air conditioning.

Mine has been broken for 2 weeks and the maintenance man just fixed it today. It's like ice cubes are doing it buck wild all over my skin it feels so good.

Unfortunately the air smells of WD-40 from him lubing up the blower. Which you know, isn't a bad smell when you are working on something, but not good as an ambient scent.

What modern contrivances would be loath to say goodbye if you were given the opportunity to go to a truly steampunk world?

Because honestly, how do you operate air conditioning on steam?

I would also miss slushies.

The internets. I love them way too much.

Actually, a steam powered air conditioner is completely possible. Just replace the internal electric motor with an external steam engine and you're done.

And the new thing in the major thing in the steampunk community is finding a way to make modern items work in a Victorian setting.
A steam generator can be used to make electricity for any thing that can't run on steam, so the iPod, the computer, and many other modern conveniences are possible. You just have to look at the bigger picture.

I would have to say video games. While higher technology would be possible, it would probably be relegated to military-use or only be affordable by the rich. I would hate having to give them up.

I say to stive for the ideals of the Victorian Era. The courtesy, the mannerisms, etc. It's something the world is missing today (despite historically the victorian era never lived up to it's ideals).

I'd also like people to work more on finding modern applications for steam power.....like the fuel cell car, as well as digging back up the idea of alternating current for the primary way of distributing electricity (Nikola Tesla was on the right track).

Steam=hot...I'm just saying.

I'm not talking about what can and can't be made into steam punk, I'm just asking what you wouldn't want to lose.

I think I could handle a lack of air conditioning, as long as it was in an age where fans were the social norm. I'm enjoying one of those right now. ^^ (Cools the aloe on my burn. Curse my complexion.)
I would also miss the internet, if only because this age of instant communication has rendered most of us handicapped when it comes to face-to-face social niceties.

This reminds me of the plot of that show, the 1900's House. I need to watch that again...

I could rant for hours about how HORRIBLE air conditioning is. Sure, I'm addicted to it now, but before air conditioning existed, people had to go OUTSIDE to stay cool because houses were too hot and stuffy. Now that we all can stay nice and cool indoors, sitting around, there's no reason to go outside into the "nasty" heat. I would NOT be sad to see air conditioning go, especially since a steam-powered fan isn't much of an impressive feat. It definitely wouldn't be hard to stay warm in a steampunk winter!

Really, if I was suddenly dropped into a steampunk world, I'd probably be too fascinated to actually miss anything from the modern real world. I'd gladly leave behind my Ether Games to take up an apprenticeship learning to build steam machines. I'd take the thrill of flying through the sky in a flying ship, over an iPod or pushing buttons on a controller, any day.

EDIT: Of course, I'm talking about steampunk Victorian era (or Neo-Victorian). I wouldn't want to live in the historically accurate Victorian era, but it might be nice to visit. If I were to live in any historically accurate setting, it would probably be the 1950's, post-WWII USA -- poodle skirts, milk shakes, cheap hamburgers, huge cars, drive-in theaters, drive-in restaurants, the rise in corny sci-fi flicks, and computers the size of a house! And air conditioning isn't widespread yet, to boot!

nice

I'm sure you could just enjoy the opium.

Xeigrich- Good lord.

Let me tell you, I used to live in New Orleans and we didn't have air-conditioning period. There is no escaping the heat in those conditions at all. You just sit...and sweat.

Also, in further air news. It quit working again about 20 minutes ago sad

Honestly? Music is nice, but a grammaphone is just fine. So is getting a bunch of friends together and breaking out the instruments.
I usually live without AC, so that's not a biggie. And yes, I do get someplace that gets quite hot. It's usually especially bad July through the end of September with a freak heat wave in February or March.
But there are some modern medical technologies that I like very much (yay for psoriosis gunk!). Brightly colored hair dye (blue, green, purple) certainly weren't around in the victorian age, and I do love those... Also, this one is kind of embarassing, but... modern female hygene products...
