people always tell me marching band isnt a sport. i believe it is. we work just as hard. it is a huge physical activity. we DO compete against other bands. we dont just march in parades. we entertain and when we do compete we get scores.
physical activity, competing, scores, thats sounds like a sport doesnt it?

I remember a few years ago DCI compared marching a single show is equal to running a marathon just because of the amount of effort needed to perform

I think marching band is more of a performance than a sport. Meaning that it is more than just trying to stack up points and win. It is an art form, which i think is more than you can say for any sport.

well i don't know about a sport but i do think we should get a p.e. credit for it (since marching does more). they've been talking about it being a p.e. credit but so far no luck

Wicked Nitemare people always tell me marching band isnt a sport. i believe it is. we work just as hard. it is a huge physical activity. we DO compete against other bands. we dont just march in parades. we entertain and when we do compete we get scores. physical activity, competing, scores, thats sounds like a sport doesnt it? I agree that seems to fit my description of a sport. Also Marching though many on the outside don't see it as a sport, it is so much better than P.E. class! shivers.

we used to get "scholar athlete" awards, just like the football players, if we got a 3.8 or higher... now we get "band scholar" awards.. Was that a step forward or backward?

its the sport of the arts
we compete, just like every other sport.
we exhert just as much or more energy as most (not necessarily all) sports

Cheerleaders and other people at my school say that Marching Band is not a sport. Everytime I hear this, I always argue. I say that it IS a sport because we do as much, or more, physical activity than the other sports. We have uniforms, practices, "coaches", and competitions. Marching Band IS a sport, but it exceeds all other sports, because it is an art in its own way. As you can tell, I have had time to think about this. Here is a question that we should ask people everytime someone says Marching Band is not a sport: If Cheerleading is considered a sport, why not Marching Band?!?! Think about it, and HEED MY WORDS!!!

i said no..ah! don't throw pencils at me!!
i think of marching band as an athletic art because while it takes an enormous amount of work like sports do, the actual definiton for "sports" is something like two teams have to face each other and marching bands go on one at a time, so...yeah. athletic art. :3
