Should it be legalized?

If you guys want to know my opinion of it, it's below:

Yes, I think it should be legalized. people are going to do it anyway--CLEARLY. But if it were legalized, it could be altered and monitored and aided by the federal government! Just like in any other job, child labor and unfair wages could be eliminated, and there would, at the very least, be compensation and health care if the lady were hurt! Also, no one could be forced to do it--because since it's legal, it isn't as easy, so it's not like well, I can't do anything else--and they would not have to fear arrest! Some people like doing it, so they can do it, it'll be easier--and people that don't like it don't have to! Plus, people that just go to prostitutes because they're scandalous and end up abusing them would go away, and people that just want to have sex with a stranger can give the ladies their jobs but won't be allowed to hurt them.

I'm just sayin'.

So???

I think you're just asking for trouble. Yeah, once upon a time it was legal, but now? People would freak out more at government regulation than anything else. I think people would start screaming about 'privacy'.

This was a direct challenge to people asking if i could be any more offensive, actually. But people need to scream about something--better this than britney's new baby or something. And I wasn't asking for reactions, I wanted your opinion, silly.

That is my opinion. Yeah, I believe in marriage and fidelity, and I don't care about prostitution, but then again my opinion doesn't really count. People would freak no matter what I said. Silly people.

sigh you're missing the point. be assertive with your opinion! here at least, if nowhere else. It counts! And no one here will freak.

Marriage and fidelity? what has they to do with prostitution?
PostPosted: Wed Apr 15, 2009 7:42 pm

IMO: Marriage = I love you forever. Sacred union between two people. Sex is a sacred thing that ties two bodies together forever.

Prostitution: Flings for money. Either "I really, seriously need money and this is the only option" or "i enjoy the sex and money is a bonus".

And why should I be assertive? It's not like I'm trying to force myself onto anybody...

because being...whatever the opposite of assertive is, is really annoying! who gives a damn about people. you don't need to tiptoe around anyone! it's not shoving in people's face, it's sticking up for yourself!

Meh. I knows not how I feel abotu marriage. but prostitution is pretty much just like casual sex, only you get paid. and people have casual sex all the time. So....problem? I don't see a problem
PostPosted: Wed Apr 15, 2009 9:34 pm

And you don't choose your partner, and there is only the sex, which is rare in more general casual sex, although, no, not unique, as you say.

I think that prostitution should be legalized for the same reasons I think abortion should be legalized. (Well. Was legalized, I suppose. Should have been? I mean, it wasn't actually legalized for those reasons per se. I mean, what?)

Right.

Interesting discussion.

I agree with you Kirby - it's happening anyway, legality gives the government legitimate control over its practise and working standards. I believe (not certain here) that the laws against prostitution are either looser or non-existent in Europe (I remember news about brothels being set up in the area of the stadiums for the Football World Cup a few years back.) So at least in Germany it is legal and regulated so it does seem to work.

Ahah! Thank you thank you. so useful!

I'm actually doing a project on this later. or writing an essay. something like that! So you guys are good help ^^

I really do think it could work though. mostly I'm concerned for their safety and welfare! poor underpaid underage injured prostitutes. Once you write a novel about them you really start to empathize you know?

I actually don't think the prostitutes would appreciate it being legalized though. If it is legal, they will have to go through work forums and pay taxes, therefore they would be making less for themselves, while selling their body, yes?

Might get other benefits, though? Security and so forth.

Of course, illegal prostitution would continue for that very reason, but still.

well, prostitutes wouldn't have to set their own rates, they'd have a minimum wage! and they would get rid of all their sketchier customers, and have like health care. So good! And they wouldn't be arrested.

There is a fine line between illegal prostitution and casual sex after the man buys dinner. VERY FINE.

Hun, you do realize mimimum wage would be a price cut for many (and I mean many) prostitutes? Seeing as many can make 10 bucks or so in 30 minutes or less and minimum wage is $7.21 an hour.

I feel like when you are in such a position, or have been for a while, you really don't want the government "riding in and screwing things up" They are making their money, tax free, and alot of it in a short while.

I do believe that the health care and security would be good and all... But the demand for it would be so little. There would be so many hoops to jump through, especially with the men with the money. std tests, back ground checks... etc. Most of the time those men want a quick back ally fling, no names, no records; hence they pay with cash.

Well I mean, it's like working in a store or something--they HAVE to pay you a MINIMUM of $7 or wahtever but you can go higher. Cause like, some prostitutes have to get paid very very little...like pocket change. This isn't to help the skanky geishas that work in an apartment! jeez. it's to help like the thirteen-year-olds and the ones that get beat up and the ones that live on the streets.

Prostitutes are also self-employed, meaning it's up to them who they screw. If they want to check that's fine, i guess. But if they DO happen to get an STD, it's just the same as if they accidentally broke an arm--they go get it fixed with government money! I don't know how they'd prosecute the guy tho, if they had to.

It's not like standardizing prostitution, making it like going to the friggin therapist. think of it as more like going to the nail salon. you pay the little asian lady, get your toes done, and leave without a trace. You don't need insurance or anything to visit one. But they get paid however much they charge, (and if you make it a minimum-wage job then there won't BE any cheaper so people will HAVE to pay that much, you see?) and if they get hurt on the job with like burning oil or something they can get help for it. Seeeee?

Mostly I would want to make it legal so that prostitutes wouldn't be afraid to be arrested all the time. I mean it doesn't really make sense that it's illegal in the first place. It's more like casual sex than anything else. But prostitutes need to be able to go to hospitals and clinics and stuff!
