So looking at the huge response we had in the cosplay thread, I was curious to see where people attended conventions.

You might run into someone you know!

I attend Portcon religiously, might see about Boston Con in the future, and then next year any Cons in Hawaii.

You? 3nodding

Well, I've gone to Vericon (at Harvard) and Otakon (in Baltimore, MD). Others in my area are Anime Next, Conneticon, and Anime Boston.

Whoa, Harvard convention?

-Bows down to the portcon-
It stunk last year but this year will be better.

Yeah, it was my first convention. It wasn't really that great but I met some fun people and we had a good time.

Lets see...

I go to Portcon regularly. I was going to go to AnimeBoston this year, but it turns out that's the weekend I drive home from college and my last final is that Friday, so no dice...maybe next year!

In Ohio I've been to Animarathon which is a free con at Bowling Green University. I was planning on going to OhioCon, but that turned out to be super expensive. All the other good Ohio cons happen ove rhte summer when I'm back home.

I've never been to one... (Really shouldn't be here then probably..) Are they fun? What happens? Is it just cosplaying?

My first one was only fun because I met some fun people. But it was a really small con. My second was Otakon which is one of the largest cons on the east coast. I had a pretty good experience but what ruined it for me was that my boyfriend was grumpy the whole weekend. I'd want to go again though (with more friends!) when I have spare cash again.
As for what there is...
There are TONS of people cosplaying which is part of the fun. You get to take pictures and meet people. There are also panels! You can get info on your favorite comic artists, voice actors, how-to on everything from art, to cosplay, to special interest stuff. And don't forget the dealers room. You can buy discount manga and a variety of other fantastic anime products. At Otakon they had a rave, an anime music video contest, a costume contest and cosplay skits. They also have anime viewing. Most conventions will give you a list of events on the website if you want to get more con specific.

SAKURA CON WHICH IS THIS WEEK YAY~!
PostPosted: Wed Apr 08, 2009 8:50 am

In addition to what Mugoi said, at our convention we can also purchase products in the dealers room that aren't anime-esque. You can buy foods like pocky and buy literal imports of Japanese goods (though admittedly that is only about one dealer!) I believe there were some shounen-ai and shoujo-ai panels there too. A lot of pins can be purchased too.

Make sure you bring a camera! Also, be sure to remember to eat! At our convention, it's always more expensive to buy things at the hotel. We walk accross the street to the mall to get the food. All of the product we get at the convention though. Many retailers such as Borders place higher discounts at it. smile

People will remember you though. For example... this year, Yama met someone in my dorm who greeted her with "YOU'RE SORA!!!!!" She makes an excellent Sora then hm? If people recognize her when she's not in cosplay biggrin The friends that you meet at the convention you'll appreciate for a very long time. biggrin

I also like looking back and thinking about all of the fun quotes we had. I like going in town and to the mall in costume to scare the normal passerby.

Hmm.. I've gone to a lot. ComicCon, E3 before it was changed to just press and development people, I went to this one in Germany whose name escapes me. But my favorite convention to go to is Connecticon in Hartford, Connecticut. I've never had so much fun in 3 days I go every year. I'm actually hoping to cosplay as Haruko from FLCL this year if I have time! ^.^

Connecticon is another one I was hoping to go to this year, but that doesn't look like it's going to happen unless I get a really good job this summer. XD
