I see that the threads are getting low on activity, so I may put random discussion threads up...
Some Questions for discussion:
What are your thoughts on this? (Can you back them up?) Do you think the making of games is an Art? (Why or why not?)
If yes:
What form would you consider it to be? Which style would you consider some games to have? If no:
What would you consider it as, if not art? Why don't you see it as an art?
(If you would like to throw extra in there, go right ahead... biggrin

Games sever a purpose, so they are not art.

I think they are, just like I think movies and books are art. Games are something that people put their feelings and emotions and hard work into, just like any work of art. Games like Okami and Final Fantasy are definitely art to me. I'm not so sure about shooters and games like that. I'd classify those are more of "entertainment", but for people who enjoy them and create them I'm sure they are works of art. I don't agree with what The Full English said at all. I don't think something has to be purposeless to be art. In fact, I think art serves the greatest purpose of all - to make us happy. And that's exactly what games do.

I can agree with you in one of two ways... Art is the products of human creativity. Games are creations that come from great minds and I feel they are Art. They move people in several ways, as does art. Many things about Art and gaming serves a purpose. Whether it's to learn something or for pure intertainment. Then again I see it as a pay-check more than expression, which is the main point in Art. EXPRESSION!!! Most games are built for the fact they give alot of money fed to the creator. That is also found in Arts, but they are expressing themselves whether they know it or not...

Art & Games nearly go hand in hand. Either way, they're both good. =D
