What is it that interests you the most in Japan? Or, what was the number one reason for wanting to join the guild? As for me... well, the first thing that got me into Japan I think would have to be......manga. Because my passion for drawing was heavily influenced by that. But now, there are a lot of things that I like about the country. I think that still, my number one reason for it is for the art.

I got into it for the art but I think the number one reason is the culture. It's so much more interesting that American history.
I joined the guild because someone invited me (I have no idea who or why! lol) and it seemed like a cool group of people. And since I never talk to people...I figured I should try something new and give it a shot!

Lol, that's a good reason! I actually don't know that much about the culture. How did you find out about it so that it became your passion? Everything that I've learned is in little tid-bits. Also, a lot of it I don't trust because it came from biased historically inaccurate movies such as Pearl Harbor.

Memoirs of a Geisha struck a chord with me though. Even though that book is a work of realistic fiction, it struck true for me (Arthur Golden). I really like to write myself, so back in high school I adapted an assignment so that I would take the persona of Hatsumomo. I wrote in Diary format, explaining how I had become the person I was at present. My teacher loved it and she read the book so I guess it wasn't so terrible. I included Japanese in the book when I was referring to the dates, but I wrote it in regular English with a calligraphy pen. Essentially, I roleplayed an entire assignment. Easy, breezy, beautiful! ;o

Well, I guess the first thing that got me into Japanese culture was manga and anime, but what has kept me interested has to be the music. I hardly read manga series anymore and don't bother spending my small amounts of money on the anime (I mean, c'mon! I'm not spending $35 on just THREE EPISODES!). I do still, however, love the music. Both traditional japanese and J-pop/rock really interest me and I love listening to the language being sung to me, even if I don't know what it means! LOL

Agreed, anime is very expensive. That's just another reason why I don't invest. Besides, you can watch it online anyhow. (If you have the time. College kids like us do not...) And actually I don't really read anymore... but I still draw.

Yay for using fan-fiction on school assignments! XD Did we go see the movie for Memoirs of a Geisha together? I can't help but think we did...I never got around to reading the book, but the movie was so beautiful and well done. I still have too many books on my plate to read it though. XD

I'm not sure. But it really is. Every time I see the trailer I want to see it again. (Hurray for ghostbuster references, btw.)

And, the book was a quick read, and good enough for me to also own a copy that was released in spanish. surprised

Someone finally noticed my signature and recognized it! XD

Ok, back on topic:
I have to say that the movie makes me want to go into the Japanese country-side more that anything. It is kind of funny, because everytime I hear about a trip to Japan people talk about the cities or (in the case of an exchange student) the schools. No one ever talks about the mountains or any of the more secluded areas.

I want to know about them!!! gonk

Chloie - A lot of it is just sort of picked up. I learn things from reading, art, research for class stuff, and that sort of thing. And didn't you know? History is written by the winners. Every part of history is written by the winners.

@Izumi-san - The movie is not nearly as fantastic as the book. It was beautiful but I was really disappointed that they didn't follow the book accurately. (although when does a movie ever do that?)

Oh my god I know what you mean!! I actually have a friend who's living in backwoodsy Japan. He posted pictures of his neighborhood and it looked like something out of a Miyazaki movie. It really looked like the setting for My Neighbor Totoro.

Touché!

Hey, you two! You know what I've been getting really into lately? Shinkai Makoto.
H*lysh*td*mnf*ck. 8O

I really...really....REALLY loved 5 centimeters/second. That shows a bit of the countryside. In fact, Shinkai is said to be the next Miyizaki. Check it out guys, he has a very distinct style.

I really want this DVD so badly! But I have to pay $45 to get it because now word is out that they may be/already have stopped making the DVDs!!

This is the anime in a book. Cells. It's so extraordinarilly detailed!

Is that the guy they're conditioning for Miyazaki's job? (is that the right word? I think that's the word I was looking for...) I heard about it in the commentary for The Cat Returns. They were talking about how Miyazaki is getting older and thinking of retiring so they were trying to find someone to fill his shoes and they think they may have found someone. I can't remember what his name was though.

[EDIT] Just added that movie to my netflix

Good choice. Off the record though, I was considering 'renting'' it and then ''buying it'' because I "lost it" just because it'd be cheaper..... [/dream]

You won't regret it. We played it in the lobby and we attracted a lot of people to it. It's really sweet...simplistic... but also very meaningful.

I couldn't understand the Japanese, so I"m not sure. However, I do know that he does all of his work on a Mac computer. xD

Eff that. I have a dell and it works just fine with my tablet ;o

But what I meant is that he is the one who does all of the work.
