Yeah, so, this is just a pointless rant of mine that I needed to post somewhere.
Y'all can suffer through it or just hit the back button. Whatevs.

WARNING: Phreno's anger may result in some serious language.

I roleplay over in Barton. Yes. Don't judge me. But here's what's been pissing me off lately.
People who say s**t like this:
I do not like to use labels like "literacy", but I suppose would consider myself at the level of [whatever].

IF YOU DON'T LIKE TO USE THE LABELS, THEN ******** sick of people who don't accept the terms given to ranging levels of roleplaying literacy here on Gaia. And then they'll go one to use said terms.
As if we should be grateful to them or something for their using socially accepted terms for universal-understanding.

The leading reason people don't like these terms is because they don't "believe" in them, and then they'll give some sort of dictionary definition of literacy, and point out how Webber's doesn't have the same definition.
WELL NO s**t, SHERLOCK. LITERACY IS BEING USED AS A NET TERM IN THIS PARTICULAR CONTEXT. WEBBER'S HAS PRETTY OLD DEFINITIONS. IT TAKES YEARS, SOMETIMES DECADES, OF A WORD FLOATING AROUND BEFORE IT BECOMES OFFICIALLY ACCEPTED INTO MOST DICTIONARY'S. MOST SWEAR WORDS, SUCH AS "********", DIDN'T APPEAR IN COMMON DICTIONARIES UNTIL AROUND 2000.

But in argument to their argument, let's use the common dictionary definition of "literate" according to google, shall we?

  • able to read and write
  • versed in literature; dealing with literature
  • knowledgeable and educated in one or several fields; "computer literate"

That's according to Princeton.

Even wiki gives us something similar"
"The traditional definition of literacy is considered to be the ability to read and write, or the ability to use language to read, write, listen, and speak."

My favourite, and the best proof for the point I'm trying to make:
"literacy - Ability to read, spell and to communicate through written language."

Now, to compare, let's take a sample of a roleplay post direct from Barton, and still stinking of s**t.

lol wtf is this?
maze was in the basement tied to a chair slowly wakeing up "what happend"maze asked himself "help"maze screamed

This particular gem was brought to you direct from the roleplay human boys traped in tower with girl vamps(needs vamps, currently at twelve pages.

Another example?

lolololol, QUALITY!
Scarlet hears the scream for help and a evil grin apears on her face"excelnt"she starts to walk down the staris heading toward the basement

Now, these are actually examples of the more intelligent species of horny pre-pubescent roleplayers in Barton. There are much, much worse specimens out there.

Refer back to the underlined in the third definition.
Communicate.
Effectively communicate.
Now, while I spend enough time on the internet to make sense of that, I know a number of people who would probably have to read through a few times before picking up the jist of it.

"Able to read and write."
This is the leading argument anti-labelists have against literacy as a valid term on the internet. They argue that anyone, even morons, can read and write.

Go to one of these threads. Post something lengthy, substantial, descriptive and coherent. You know what you'd most likely get in reply?
"Lulwhut?"

Strike out the able to read part.

As for writing... I think the examples speak for themselves.
That's not writing. That's madly smashing your fist against the keyboard and hoping something coherent comes out.

This isn't the problem I have with anti-labelists though.
To an extent, their argument is valid. It's just easy to shoot down by an angry, spiteful b***h like me.
The problem I have with them is that, seconds after basically boycotting use of the terms, they go one to define themselves by it.
WHAT'S THE POINT OF TELLING AS YOU DON'T BELIEVE IN BEING LITERATE, ONLY TO GO ON TO SAY THAT YOU ARE?
Some people will give you a description of their abilities, and while I am still mildly annoyed by these, let's face it, slightly elitists snobs, I can at least respect them for sticking to their guns.
To say you don't believe in something, and then to go out and use it, just makes you out to be a git. It's like saying you don't believe in violence, and then punching someone in the throat.
When they do this, it makes them look, besides elitist, highly condescending. It makes them look weak. It makes them look arrogant, to me. Again, going back to the whine in which I say that we should somehow be grateful to them.

Literacy in terms of roleplaying may not be in your precious dictionary, but it's all over most every rolepaly forum you will ever find.
Deal.

In conclusion:
You don't believe in "literacy"? Fine by me.
Just don't act like you do.

Nice rant, very well written too. I've never encountered someone who has done what you stated, but people who aren't literate really annoy me. I seen something on AOL the other day about the internet being bad for us, and our kids. How it makes people stupid. (They didn't come out and say that, but it was hinted at.)

And THESE people are the reasons for it! People who go around talking like they're mentally ill. And I'm not talking typing mistakes or something, cause really, we all make them. I noticed one or two in your rant, does that make you an idiot? No.

I'm talking about people who talk like, "wat r u talking abot?" People like this, make the internet seem like a bad place, that only makes us stupid. When I first started really coming online, about 3 years ago, I was blown away. (Prior to the I only came on to check my mail, look stuff up, ect ect, I never got on to talk to people.) I would have to read stuff 5 times over before I finally knew what the hell the people were saying.

Like you, now after being online for a while I can read something and know exactly what they mean. (Which is kinda sad when you think about it.) But for people who are used to literate speakers, its like a world is morons. I mean, I was more literate then these 16-18 year olds when I was in 3rd grade.

If these people really annoy you, then you should see some of the people I used to RP with. this one guy, I swear he parents must have dropped him on his head when he was a baby. Cause he would RP like this: he waked in and sat down on the couch hello he said and smild as he lend bak against the couch" That was his RP style. (He thought he could be a literate RPer. -_-) He never capped anything, didn't have the common sense to use quotes around his words, and never punctuated his sentences.

And whats worse, is that everyone else on the board was great at literate RPing. So he just seemed like a lone idiot. And NO ONE corrected him! Not one person! I finally stopped going to the boards for certain reasons, but I really don't miss him at all.

And your not a "spiteful b***h" as you said. XD Your just like me, a normal person who is dumbfounded that people can't write like they're human. And it annoys you, just like it does me. Thats all.

I'm tempted to wave some sort of banner in the air and scream "pro-literates unite!"
Har har.

The more pressing issue, however, is where my glasses are...

It's hard not to typo when typing in gloves, too.
I hate you cold weather...
PostPosted: Thu Feb 26, 2009 7:19 pm

Hm....That gives me an idea....*runs off to make something*

You wear glasses? How cute!!

Heh, I hate the cold to, but its not enough to make me wear gloves! Where do you live? I'm in New York, and its freezing here!

In Australia.
It's SUPPOSED to be summer here.
But, alas, total fail.

Yeah, glasses.
Theoretically, they're just for reading.
But...
Okay, you know how you sort of have a semi-dirty car window, or something? And you can see out it just fine, no difficulty? You can read words, see details, all that shizazz?
But then someone winds down the window and suddenly the world is in just so much more focus?
That's my glasses. I can see without them, but everything is just clearer with them on, so I usually always wear them.

Ah, it can't be that cold there at all. (keep in mind that for me, cold is around 20 degree's faren.)

Ah, I see. I don' have to wear glasses, my vision is pretty good. ^^

Finally! Someone else who takes issue with all this "text-talk" crap. Type your damn words and type them correctly!

It took me forever to understand what some of these people were saying. Now, years later I can read it, but I feel I've become stupider for it. stare

Haha I know how you feel. A lot of us feel the same way, but whats the point in saying so? The equivalence of one person standing up to the thousands of idiot typers, would be like one snow flake trying to stop an avalanche.

Haha, it gets pretty cold over her. We measure in celcius, but... let's see, the nights can get up to -20? And that's just in my area, which is pretty mild. It stays cold in the morning, but then my midday it gets sweltering, which is why I hate the cold weather so much.
It's not bloody consistent!

Haha!! That sucks!! Its not like that here. Either its cold, warm, or hot.
